A fantastic effort from the Somerset Men’s O50s who took in Buckinghamshire at The Avenue.

After lots of great matches, Somerset just came up short losing the match 3-2.

▪️Jon Treen (Woodland)
▪️Neil Kanka (Bridgwater)
▪️Sid Stronach (Bridgwater)

Great effort, lads 👏👏

AVENUE TENNIS CLUB ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

This year's AGM Meeting will be held on Sunday 27th September 2026 at the Avenue Tennis Club starting at 12 noon.

See Notices below. They will also be put up onto the notice board in the clubhouse.

The committee are still looking for a volunteer to help with Hirings and Lettings and this year we also hope to fill the Ladies' Captain role which has been vacant for six years. Nominations for these or any other committee position must reach me at least seven days before the AGM (Sunday 20th September). It is important to have new volunteers to help run the club efficiently - unfilled positions results in extra work for the remaining committee members who already work very hard for the club. If you would like to find out more or wish to put yourself forward for nomination, please contact me by email ([email protected]), or speak to any other members of the committee.

Hi all - message from the committee - The last two weeks have been a hive of activity at the Avenue with our own Grade 3 tournament taking place between the 17th - 22nd August followed by the Somerset County Championships last week. It has been great to see the courts so busy and the standard of tennis over the course of the two weeks was fantastic with some excellent tennis on display.

The events were well supported by both members of the Club and visitors from far and wide who were there to cheer on the players. A number of the Avenue members played in the events so well done to those who entered and took part.

Overall, the feedback from the players, parents and supporters was overwhelmingly positive with so many people commenting on how good our facilities are and what a friendly and welcoming club the Avenue is. None of this would be possible without the support of so many people from across the Club who gave up their time to assist with the preparation of the facilities and man the kitchen and the bar during the events

A special mention must go to Gill, Jose and Shirley who coordinated the kitchen and catering over the two week period. They were ably supported by Sheila, Shan, Janet, Poo, Jacqui, Karen, Julie, Jenny W, Jane Impey, Ange, Wendy, Tony, Shelly B, Mel, Christine, Kerry, Alan and Mike Thomson. Thanks too, to Kay who opened the bar every day and to David who restocked the bar several times and to Steve and Geoff for manning the BBQ on Friday night. Thank you to you all.

A very BIG thank you too, goes to Pippa Lawton who coordinates the events on the Club's behalf, particularly when it came to the Somerset County Championships. She had some very long days at the Club last week and is now hopefully enjoying a very well deserved rest.

Finally, we would like to thank the membership 'at large' for their support and understanding when it comes to these events. We appreciate there is occasionally disruption to the social tennis schedule during these two weeks, however, the revenues we receive from these events are fairly significant and contribute greatly to the overall financial health of the Club, so as a Club these events benefit us enormously.

We now look forward to seeing everyone back on court and preparing for our own Club Championship finals day in a couple of weeks time

Hi everyone - club has been very busy with tournaments over August and the internal club tournament is in full swing.

Massive thanks to the committee and volunteers who made both weeks such a great success and social event.

Please see war and peace update below which is mainly here so that you can share with friends, family and work colleagues who may not know much about the club. If I've missed anything please reply by posting here.

The main points being highlighted;

- Tim's new coaching timetable for September to December
- Red Dragon Tour Finals - Sunday 6th September
- Vinny's Minis - please get the kids to invite some more friends so we can introduce them to tennis and then get them into coaching

Avenue Tennis Club – September 26

The Avenue Tennis Club played host to the LTA Grade 3 Burnham on Sea Open Tennis and the LTA’s Somerset Closed tournaments and the feedback from all who attended was very positive with regards to the standard of tennis but more pleasingly to the Avenue Tennis Club the tournament and social support given by the clubs committee and volunteers who gave up their time to make the tournaments a great success was scored exceptionally.

The club will host the Under 9 Somerset Red Dragon Finals Day on 6th September 26 and invite spectators to come along and support the youngsters who will be playing to be crowned the Somerset Red Dragon Champion following several tournaments played earlier this year throughout the county a various indoor and outdoor sports venues.

The club’s own internal tournament has started, with the match draws made in early August and will see a range of singles and doubles matches played across various age groups, culminating with a club finals day planned for the 20th of September 26.

Both the Men’s and Ladies teams are always looking for new players to come along and play at the club, with Men’s practice night on Mondays from six o clock and Ladies on Tuesdays from six o clock, all very welcome to come along and give tennis a try.

Now the summer season matches have finished, players can also play competitive matches in the Avenue Tennis Club singles ladder, which was won by Antony Dyer in its first year. If you are interested in signing up for this, please contact Club Captain, Sam Goodhew at the club, 01278 782758, message via facebook or see our website www.avenuetennis.com.

The following tournaments will be played at the club in during September, and everyone is invited to come along and get involved or just to watch some fantastic tennis:

12th September – U12 County Cup 8am-4pm – kitchen open
20th September – Club Championships final – BBQ planned.
