Avenue Tennis Club – What’s Coming
The Avenue Tennis Club hosted Mr Fred Riordan who presented an interesting, educational, and lively tale with lots of historic details revealed about the life, loves and times of Napolean Bonaparte revealing where the famous quote “Not tonight Josephine” originated. Well done to Fred and the people who attended the event on Thursday 28th May raising £545.50, with every penny of the money raised together with that from our generous sponsors going to help Weston Hospice with its much-needed and important work in our local community.
Following the success of the singles ladder, completed in April 25, the next ladder competition will begin in July. Once the summer season matches have finished in July, players can continue to play competitive matches in the singles ladder or come along and join in with the Men’s match practice nights on Monday and Ladies on Tuesday evenings. On Sunday 21st June the Avenue Tennis Club will host the Somerset Red Dragon Under 8 (Red Ball), 9 (Orange Ball) and 10 (green Ball) FUN tennis festival from 1:00pm till 5:00pm which will include a B-B-Q and refreshments from the clubs well stocked bar. The Red Dragon Tour for various junior age groups has been going for some years now and has seen some fantastic and competitive tennis played at various venues around Somerset with juniors progressing through the age groups via fun competition.
As well as the FUN tennis festival detailed above, Pippa Lawton, the clubs referee has advised of the following competitions at the club. Everyone is welcome to come along, play by signing up via the LTA club competitions website “https://competitions.lta.org.uk/tournaments” or just watch some great tennis at probably the best clubhouse in Somerset. The bar and kitchen will be open providing sustenance for those watching as detailed below.

The club operates an annual membership scheme which runs for one year from 1st of April annually with a variety of membership options and prices as detailed on our website www.avenuetennis.com, membership is prorated when joining throughout the year. Benefits of membership include the free use of the four floodlit astro-turf and four floodlit hard courts all year round, with an exclusive option to book courts up to 14 days in advance: floodlights are free to members. Members also have access and use of the well-equipped clubhouse, well stocked bar, free use of a battery-operated tennis ball machine, discounted coaching/holiday clubs, excellent changing facilities, and several organised social events throughout the year.

Group and private individual coaching for juniors and adults is provided by the clubs Head Coach, Tim Seymour. Tim offers a variety of options which are detailed on his website, www.tennis-extreme.com. If you are looking to improve your fitness for 2026, come along, and give Tim’s cardio tennis a go, it is great fun, hitting tennis balls and exercising to music in a fun and very social environment with others of a like mind. If you want to start or comeback to tennis, then why not try Tim’s adult coaching on Friday nights from 6 to 7 o clock. Tim provides a variety of junior courses for all standards and ages throughout the week and weekend or you may just want to have some private one to one lesson. Tim also holds school holiday camps at the Avenue, together with camps at other tennis venues nearby which can be booked via his website above, but please book early as places are limited, next camps are during the summer school holiday break.
Pickleball has been up and running at Avenue Tennis Club for some time now and is thriving with organised Wednesday evening and Saturday afternoon hits. All equipment is supplied if required. If you would like to get involved in one of the fastest growing new sports in the UK then please come along to the Avenue Tennis Club and join in with the organised social play with Club Captain, Sam Goodhew on Wednesday evenings from 6 till 8 o clock or to the social play Saturday afternoon session. For junior members there are free Friday night tennis sessions ran by qualified LTA coaches Vinny Duddy and Megan Rundle, if you do not fancy joining in Tim’s adult coaching from 6 till 7 or get involved in some social tennis doubles play, then the club’s well stocked bar is open for hot and cold drinks throughout the junior family evening, with the schedule as follows:
- five till six o clock – aged four to seven years old.
- six till seven o clock – aged eight to under eleven years old.
- seven till eight o clock – aged over eleven years old.
The Avenue Tennis club holds Wednesday Night Suppers, normally on a fortnightly basis which sees the diners treated to a 3-course meal with cheese and biscuits for a cost of £13.50, payable in cash on the night, vegetarian options always available. The bar opens at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. On the menu for our next Supper Evening, there will be a variety of Shirley's homemade quiches - bacon cheese and onion, smoked salmon with spinach and cheese, and a veggie version. All will be served with a salad and herby new potatoes. This will be followed by a variety of puddings, cheese, and biscuits.
