Greetings

This weekend sees the end of the 2021 RBOD season which, all things considered, has been a good one with 9 boats campaigning and honours distributed widely across the fleet. Racing on both Saturday and Sunday (!) this coming weekend, the fleet and their supporters will reward themselves with a grand banquet in the form of Sunday lunch at the Club. All are welcome to join in but do book in advance as this is always a very well attended event.

During the lunch the start of the countdown to the 90th anniversary of the birth of the fleet will be announced. This amazing milestone will be celebrated in true RBOD style throughout 2022 with numerous opportunities to join in both afloat and ashore. This photo from the 80th anniversary year gives a taste of what is to come.

See you at the weekend.

It was a close call whether the RBODs would be racing last Saturday as the wind was flicking into the 20 knot region but happily the green light was given and a sensible up-river course set. It was only a 3 boat race due to various absences but this did not detract from the quality. PHALAROPE made a cracking start with Tom showing Dad how it should be done, opening up a very respectable lead on the lively spinnaker reach to Creeksea.

MANDARIN clung on to RED JACKET's transom until past Creeksea before losing touch on the 2 sail reach to Cliff. PHALROPE's lead was slowly eroded as the years of experience at RED JACKET's helm took its toll and the pink team had to settle for second place.

The previous weekend's finishing order was MANDARIN, PHALAROPE, RED JACKET and BERYL which means the first 3 boats are now all on 4 points in the chase for the famous Albert Inkstand (and the all-important Tequila shots).

New Subject - I am unashamedly taking advantage of this mailing list to encourage you to donate to a very good cause. I am part of a team aiming to cycle the equivalent distance from London to Monaco this week. The charity is Caudwell Children and any donations via https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/burgess-cycle will be much appreciated as we pile on the miles before the finish on Friday

Greetings all
it has been a strange season so far but, despite the best efforts of the virus the RBOD fleet has enjoyed some great racing although the usual bonanza of social events has been severely curtailed. Here is a summary of some of the events since the last report:-

Main season's points
Due to a combination of the virus and too much or too little wind, only 4 races were sailed but the reduced fleet of 5 RBODs enjoyed some close racing and, for the record, although trophies won't be awarded this year, RED JACKET won the COVID Mid Summer series and MANDARIN the COVID main season's points.

August Bank Holiday Regatta
The 3 race series held in lieu of Burnham Week weekend got off to a disappointing start when the race had to be cancelled due to a rather too gusty wind from the SW. On a positive note it was a great sight to see WHITE ROSE on the start line on Sunday under new Ownership with a gaggle of young Dallimores lending a hand to Peter. Sunday was a better day although the wind didn't drop as forecast and the fleet battled round the course in 20+ knots which gave the rusty crews a good workout. On the shy spinnaker reach out to the Roach, RED JACKET opened up a narrow lead on MANDARIN and AQUAMARINE thanks to a slick spinnaker hoist. Making good use of a little more muscle, MANADRIN managed to ease through RED JACKET and retained the lead to the finish despite close attention from RJ and PHALAROPE.Monday's race was an endurance test as the fleet struggled to sail the shortened course of Jubilee, home in a dying and fickle breeze. Positions changed often as fortunes changed but RED JACKET led on the painfully slow creep towards the finish narrowly ahead of PHALAROPE and WHITE ROSE. MANDARIN's gamble of crossing to the north shore appeared to be working as bit-by-bit she moved up the fleet from last place. Sadly the winner of the beautiful Straker Cup will never be known as the time limit expired with the line agonisingly close in terms of distance. The victory on Sunday gave MANDARIN the 'series' but we look forward to a proper Burnham Week next year.

RCYC Pursuit Race
5 RBOD's joined 32 other boats for the very well supported and enjoyable Pursuit race arranged by the RCYC on what would have been the last Saturday of Burnham Week. The RBODs ended up finishing 23rd to 27th but this may be more of a reflection on the handicap rather than anything else. I am indebted to Paul Taylor and Angela Shephard for their reports on the RBOD race within the race and apologise for summarising their detailed recollection of an exciting tussle.
RED JACKET, MANDARIN, PHALAROPE, AQUAMARINE & BERYL were 4th class away and 7 minutes behind the first boat. MANDARIN took an early lead on the short beat to No 13. closely followed by BERYL while the other three boats had a tussle on port and starboard as the fleet headed off on the beat to number 13. RED JACKET spotted a starboard AQUAMARINE a little too late and had to sail under the shipping wharf. After a short beat to No.13, all 5 boats arrived in close company with MANDARIN just ahead of BERYL. As the leading 4 boats slipped over to the north shore, RED JACKET took the opportunity to leave the fleet and try something different. by breaking away onto a lonely run along the south shore but, sadly, this did not provide the advantage they had hoped for.
A foul tide and dead run guaranteed that the north shore group became tightly bunched as they dodged in and out of the pontoons on their way past the town. Shortly after Pile House RED JACKET used the Horse Shoal to cross the river and follow the rest of the fleet, now some distance ahead. As the fleet approached Greenward the closely packed Dragons joined the mix which made for a hectic rounding. Rounding Greenwood heading towards Roach, MANDARIN continued to lead followed by AQUAMARINE both of who managed to get tows from somewhat surprised Dragons. Although these hitch hikers momentarily managed to pull away from the rest of the fleet, by the time they rounded Roach, headed for Holliwell, both PHALAROPE and BERYL were close on their heels.
The four boats took to the western shore of the Roach but RED JACKET saw yet another opportunity to gain some ground and headed for the Eastern shore of the Roach with success to close in on the fleet. MANDARIN and AQUAMARINE made a dive for Holliwell earlier than PHALAROPE and BERYL (who were encouraged to stay high by the Orange RCOD), gaining some distance again however, as the two leading boats tussled for first place, an RS Elite decided to mix up their rhythmical gybing pattern and find out if RBOD’s had hidden amphibious capabilities. Luckily despite the surprise encounter both boats remained unscathed, but certainly gave the rest of the competitors some entertainment. With the Elite out of the way AQUAMARINE and MANDARIN headed towards Ron Pipe which turned out to be the final mark, with AQUAMARINE having finally taken the advantage and rounding first. RED JACKET was back in the mix with the fleet by now so as AQUAMARINE , MANDARIN, PHALAROPE , BERYL and RED JACKET headed in the general direction of Clarks looking for the finish line it was all to play for. AQUAMARINE thought they had secured certain victory seeing what appeared to be a committee boat and pin end and bore away towards it only to discover that the line was the other side of the pin end, but all was too late despite a crash tack to get to the line. This window was all that was needed for the consistently strong MANDARIN to pip AQUAMARINE to the post. The rest of the fleet were extremely close behind, with the finishing places being PHALAROPE , BERYL then RED JACKET. All competitors agreed it was a fantastic event that we are grateful to the RCYC for arranging and hope it will become an annual fixture.
Prior Cup The new owners of Priors kindly put forward a new Prior Cup for the first boat from their moorings to finish in the RCYC pursuit race. As it turned out the RBODs were the only entrants in this category and MANDARIN snatched the trophy from AQUAMARINE at the last breath. Many thanks to John and Rob for resurrecting the award of this trophy.

Single-handed race
This fully compliant socially distanced race took place last Sunday in a gentle westerly breeze with following line up:-
RB1 WHITE ROSE James Dallimore
RB2 RED JACKET Steve Herring
RB8 PHALAROPE Chris Corrigan
RB14 BERYL Simon Hollington
RB21 MANDARIN Will Dallimore

After a short beat to Number 9 the fleet bunched up on a ghosting run with some impressive spinnaker work from the busy helms, after some shuffling of positions AQUAMARINE eased away and enjoyed some clear air with a good looking lead. This was to no avail as the navigator appeared to make an error and overshot no 7 allowing MANDARIN and RED JACKET to round ahead. MANDARIN held her lead around the next leeward mark but a calamity with the spinnaker hoist plus a brief grounding allowed RJ and WHITE ROSE to draw alongside. RED JACKET was first onto the final beat to take the gun and Dallimore senior had to fight hard to stay ahead of the son & heir.

We are pleased to report that SIMONETTA is now virtually as new thanks to the generosity of our valued supporters and the the dedicated and skilled attention of RBOD Shipwright Alec Shelley. We are delighted to report that she has now been taken into private ownership and we look forward to seeing her on the water in the capable hands of a legendary Burnham sailing family.

Next in line for attention is RB17 SEA MIST, last afloat in 2012. SEA MIST has an interesting history - she was converted to a cabin cruiser in the 1960s before being returned to original design. All funds raised will be used to bring her up to first-class condition as the fleet continues to benefit from the remarkable RBOD restoration programme.

Look forward to seeing you on Sunday 23rd.

Burnham Week 2019 will be remembered fondly for many reasons not least for the exceptionally good weather, the close racing, good courses and the healthy number of youngsters enjoying the unique formula that makes the RBOD fleet so special. There was way too much action to give a detailed report of each race but here are some highlights:-

We were delighted to have ARIEL back in action having been admirably maintained in race ready condition all season by Phil Plumtree. Team Warren, fresh from Formula 1 & Formula E, took on ARIEL for the week and introduced the stunned fleet to Formula RBOD when they burst off the grid and sailed exceptionally well to take 3rd and 1st in races 1 and 2. We were delighted to see Fiona and others enjoy their first sailing experience on the Crouch and hope to see much more of this team in the future. An anecdote from ARIEL concerns one of the less race-experienced crew asking just 5 minutes into the race what time the finish will be. The Warren brothers worked as a well oiled team with younger giving instructions to elder - 'do what I tell you and don't take your eyes of the telltales, so a few mins into the first race he was doing as instructed and wanted to know how they were doing, didn't want to tell him we were leading!'

Going into race 3, ARIEL and RED JACKET, leading contenders for the Bank Holiday weekend series, were exceptionally eager and found themselves OCS allowing MANDARIN to pounce on her favourite Straker Cup and the series.

AQUAMARINE continues to deliver and is always in contention for the podium places when not on the mud. We don't like to single out individuals but mention must be made of a crew member who, rumour has it, lures boats aground with dubious lead-line calls (a modern day RBOD siren?), immediately drops his shorts to push off and then poses on the foredeck in his pants for the remainder of the race. This pattern is repeated even when on loan to other boats as ARIEL discovered - "No bottom" was the call followed immediately by "were aground!", but Tally Ho, the shorts were off in a flash and Aquapants man burst into action.

We were delighted to see ONYX helmed (very well) by Gary Sims midweek with Mike enjoying more time back on the boat and seeing ONYX win the Bert Clark Memorial Trophy. On returning to the boat for Saturday's race, Roger became aware of Gary's aversion to modern gadgets as he untaped the tiller extension from the tiller.

ONYX's groupies were in good voice from their camouflaged duck hunting kayak as Barty and Anna supported the boys before beating a rapid retreat to base when the Prosecco ran out.

A particularly memorable feature of this week was the number of youngsters enjoying the cut and thrust of RBOD racing. GANNET was in good hands with Lily, Jack P, Vincent and Helen getting the boat going well despite a near sinking during a vicious gust on Wednesday's race after which they had to bale out using their cool box having given up with the bucket with a hole. Rory and the team had a great day on Thursday with a second place - come back soon!

The Hobdays were a strong presence with all 5 family members scattered around the fleet at various stages of the week. BLUE JACKET had an excellent day on Tuesday leading from start to finish to take the Cyril Sweet trophy. It was good to see early morning exercise being taken on the paddle boards in preparation for the racing.

The young Dallimores were in action mid week with James, Clare & Sarah getting MANDARIN going well to finish second in the mid-week series. Clare, Sarah, Billie Q and Alex collectively gave the fleet a taste of Girl Power on Friday and Saturday and RED JACKET's blushes were only saved by 40 odd years of experience as Steve cleverly wriggled through on the last leg of each race. As an example of two worlds meeting, here is a snippet of conversation between the girls on MANDARIN during a tense inshore leg ..... Crew to Helm " Clare, that boat behind - they keep throwing something over the side". Evidently this 29er sailor had not seen a lead line in action before - strange that!

If there was a pointing trophy PHALAROPE would have little competition as the Pinky Blinder can sail at speed virtually into the wind. An unfortunate navigational error in race 1 allowed AQUASHARK through at the finish line as PHALAROPE elected to gybe and finish south of the committee boat on her own private line

After years of dominating this blog, BERYL strangely provided little material other than some topless appearances by the owner which were unfortunately captured by the official BW photographer. Speaking of which, Roger Mant took some great pictures which can be seen on the Burnham Week website.

Thanks as always to Sylv and the team of helpers that once again produced a very successful RBOD BBQ which raised substantial funds for the restoration of SIMONETTA.

Well done to all competitors for making it such a great week and Congratulations to RED JACKET for winning the week but, watch out, the next generation are getting closer....!

Comment from Class Captain Steve:-

Burnham Week was blessed with amazing weather this year with lots of sunshine and sea breeze enhanced winds giving us a lot of windward starts.
I’ve had great feedback from many saying how much they enjoyed the courses and the later starts, giving more recovery time from the night before as well as no postponements waiting for wind.
The RBOD racing was very close with the lead changing many times giving everyone a chance on the podium.

I was delighted to see so many young people joining the fleet adding new vitality and competition to the class. I overheard the Dallimore girls saying “ let’s keep MANDARIN and Dad can get another one “. It has to be said they sailed brilliantly and on several occasions, after doing all the hard work, they should have won but sometimes in racing there are cruel twists of fate near the end. Better luck next time girls !

At the RBOD and Elite class dinner, Will Dallimore announced our goal to repeat the success of the RBOD 80th anniversary, (when all RBODs were on the water ), in 2 years time for our 90th anniversary!
This is already gathering enthusiasm and I’ve heard from more than a few they intend to return for our 90th as well as from people like Charlie Pitcher who says his sons James and Freddie want to do it with him !
The RBOD class continues to attract a great group of Club members and friends and is definitely the best and most fun class on the river !

We were blessed with perfect weather for the annual RBOD Crew and Ladies races after the Saturday racing was cancelled due to 40+ knot winds.

A small but enthusiastic fleet of AQUAMARINE, MANDARIN and RED JACKET took part in a classic RBOD day afloat incorporating exciting racing and the all important picnic and rehydration. First off was the Crew's race with Lizzie Brown, Jenny Cole and Ged Roope on the helms. Drama developed even before the start when technical issues on MANDARIN resulted in a substantial grounding off the RCYC with 30s to go. Meanwhile, AQUAMARINE made a perfect start having made a late dash to the line after sorting out mainsail slide issues. After a lot of puffing and panting having declined the kind offer of a tow from the RCYC launch and much to the entertainment of the curious onlookers ashore, MANDARIN was finally refloated but, starting 5 minutes late, the leaders were by now mere specks in the distance. However, all was not lost and, making good use of the mid-river breeze, MANDARIN soon closed in on RJ who was hugging the north shore (and briefly the mud) in lighter airs - the race was back on for Captain Jen and the Oranginas!

The fickle wind presented a beat to Creeksea during which MANDARIN eased past RJ who was then the first to hoist her spinnaker around the corner on the leg to Cliff. AQUAMARINE had what appeared to be a solid lead but the wind died on her as she approached Cliff allowing MANDARIN to play the role of predator for a change and close up alongside before Jen cooly helmed into the lead on the beat to Canewdon. RJ got on the right side of the shifts and rounded second onto the last leg towards the finish at Bridgemarsh Buoy. MANDARIN carried a nice breeze to the line and Jen was victorious in a race that appeared over before the start - a nice reminder that the race is never over till its over. Well sailed Jenny!

The colourful ducklings then cuddled up to ALICE BROOKS anchored in the tranquil creek leading into Bridgemarsh Island. The wind dropped and the sun came out for the all important raft-up and picnic where the lady helms prepared themselves for their race which followed the maritime banquet washed down with lashings of pop.

ALICE BROOKS seamlessly converted back from picnic mother ship to committee boat and got the small but perfectly formed fleet away for the Ladies race from a start line at Bridgemarsh buoy The only change of helm was on RJ where Ged (in regulation red shorts) handed over to Mel (rebelliously in blue shorts). AQUAMARINE made a nice start and led around Glaze and Cliff from RJ and MANDARIN but the latter found some speed and eased past RJ to get close enough to almost cross tacks with AQUAMARINE. Hopes of the double for Jen were short-lived as Lizzie skillfully defended her lead and AQUAMARINE powered away to comfortably take line honors. It is particularly fitting to have AQUAMARINE's name engraved on the Sabel Cup as she is very successfully flying the flag for Girl Power in the RBOD fleet.

Well done to Jen, Lizzie, Ged and Mel for rising to the challenge and to our Committee Boat crew of Tim, Cathy and Barty with Ralph and Henry adding some welcome youth to the team.

Last weekend the RBYC hosted the Whitsun Regatta which saw 8 RBODs enjoying the closest of racing for the Georgina Kennedy Memorial Trophy and President's Cup in excellent conditions.

Race 1
BLUE JACKET made an excellent start and with clear air and great upwind speed soon opening up a good lead on the beat to Cliff with AQUAMARINE chasing hard. On the downwind leg only BJ took north shore but came out still ahead on rounding No 13. MANDARIN, PHALAROPE and WHITE ROSE swapped positions on the shifty beat but a switch to the N shore on the final downwind leg benefited RJ who moved up to third. AQUAMARINE chose the S shore for the leg home which proved the right choice as she took the win from BJ who had committed to the N shore. Visiting journalist Will Loram on board WHITE ROSE was able to witness first-hand the extremely close racing enjoyed by the RBODs

Race 2
The fleet bunched on the S shore for the start - BLUE JACKET was called OCS, BERYL made a flying start in the middle of the river but could hold off RED JACKET who rounded No 11 first followed closely by AQUAMARINE. Sadly a runner failed on BJ and she had to retire - otherwise she would, no doubt, have got back into contention. Rounding Greenward and beating into the Roach RED JACKET was in control followed by AQUAMARINE with WR & PHALAROPE closing in. After some windward leeward legs in the Roach mouth and the final turn for home around Pinto it looked like it was going to be a procession home but the wind changed introducing a shifty beat which resulted in a fascinating final approach to the line. AQUA MARINE called the shots perfectly and scraped past the pontoons on a welcome lift, PHALAROPE had a storming finish to take second and WHITE ROSE had an excellent final leg to take third from RJ. BERYL & MANDARIN could not be separated on the finish line and were awarded joint 5th place

Race 3
Another perfect sailing day with a steady breeze and sunshine. For the beat to No. 11 MANDARIN & BERYL started on N Shore and by the time the rest of the fleet joined them MANDARIN led, closely followed by BJ, BERYL, RJ, ONYX & WR. AQUAMARINE, needing a decent result to secure the series left herself a bit of a challenge with a slow start. On the long run to Clarks BJ and MANDARIN were neck and neck followed by RJ and WR. BJ snuck round first onto the beat to Holliwell. RJ & WR eased passed the misfiring MANDARIN who could see the Aqua-shark menacingly closing in with the Jaws theme tune becoming louder each tack. Rounding Horse Shoal, BJ had maintained her lead but only just as RJ had got close enough to infringe and had to take a turn. Having rounded Pinto the fleet headed for home with WR, MANDARIN & BERYL opting for the S shore. This proved a master stroke for Dragon's Dan, the WHITE ROSE guest helm, who picked his moment to cross to the North shore and emerged as the new leader. MANDARIN also picked up a place but could not hold off the on-form AQUAMARINE. Once again, the choice of shore proved decisive and WHITE ROSE held her lead to take the President's Cup followed by BJ and AQUAMARINE who had done more than enough to emerge as the very popular winner of the series. Well sailed girls (and of course Floppy Finger Fluffy).

At the prizegiving RED JACKET was presented with the Chandler Candlestick Trophy for the early May Bank Holiday series - well done the red team. It was very nice to hear RBYC Trophy Keeper commend the RBOD Class collectively for the beautiful condition of the boats - this is a credit to the dedicated band of owners and charterers who are ensuring future generations will have the opportunity to share in the fun offered by this great fleet. 2022 is the 90th Anniversary of the fleet and it would be wonderful to emulate the 80th when we had all 22 boats afloat - just sowing the seeds......

14/05/2019

A change to the town course before the start of race 2 of the Spring series caught out a couple of the RBODs. The fleet of 5 boats started in the same direction but some with a different turning mark in their sights. RED JACKET must have heard an echo of the starting ho**er ho**er and restarted only to find after the race that she was clear.

Short tacking in a closely bunched pack of RBODs introduces challenges not experienced by other classes. For those not familiar with the manoeuvring characteristics of these genteel ladies, the time between helm-down and sails full is sufficient for the Class Captain to prepare his next roll-up.

The close quarters tacking introduced plenty of excitement and the bellowing from the Pirates of the Caribbean extra on BLUE PEARL left PHALAROPE no choice but to execute a turn rather than face the keelhauling and worse threatened by the aggrieved Buccaneer.

MANDARIN led round No.3 closely followed by RJ and PHALAROPE. BJ and ONYX followed, now back on the correct course. An intense rain squall enveloped the fleet on the downwind leg with RJ emerging as the leader once it cleared. The fleet bunched up as they rounded No.13 into the tide and a dying breeze. Getting past Wallasea marina was a challenge with ONYX and PHALAROPE being forced to painfully tack away which looked to be terminal but there were still plenty of twists and turns ahead. Meanwhile, BLUE JACKET boldly took the north shore and was rewarded by a firm breeze which brought them back into contention.

On the approach to No 5 MANDARIN, RJ and ONYX were neck and neck, RJ headed up into the tide to have some of the BJ breeze, ONYX hugged the shore in less tide but less wind, MANDARIN hedged her bets and straight-lined to the mark. It turned out that ONYX made the smart choice and turned first for home, followed by MANDARIN & RJ. BJ's strategy paid off and she was in the pink as she beat PHALAROPE home. Well done team OINX for their first win of the season - the gray pig's trotters are in fine fettle.

This report would not be complete without mention of gallant Sarah Cuthbert who scaled the mast to release a jammed main halyard on BJ. Her 3 burly crew mates were naturally distraught not to be allowed up due to stability concerns.

And finally we thank our roving reporter for spotting BERYL II emerging after some substantial winter modifications which are unlikely to meet with the approval of the Class Scrutineer (see photo)

Now that the dust has settled, the last stragglers have found their way home and the final tallying up has been completed we can report on a very successful RBOD fund raising lunch.

Over 80 people gathered at the RBYC on a sunny February afternoon to enjoy a grand lunch and help support the 87 year old fleet.

After the hearty meal Auctioneer extraordinaire Alistair Munro led proceedings as an array of highly sought after lots were offered to the assembled crowd. The bidding was as always very entertaining with couples bidding against each other and the miraculous doubling up of lots to maximise income.

The raffle was no less impressive with some very high quality prizes up for grabs which ensured record ticket sales.

The afternoon rolled seamlessly into the early evening with T-Bone Steak belting out the old favourites.

Many thanks to all involved in organising this popular event, the generous donors for some exceptionally high quality auction lots and raffle prizes and all who attended and all who contributed even though they couldn't be there on the day. A total of around £5,500 was raised in total - a fantastic sum.

If you successfully bid in the auction please make sure you do the important bit and hand over the money. On line payments can be made to Royal Burnham One Design Class, Santander Business Account No. 15236821 sort code 09-01-29. Please add your name as a reference.

If you can't recall placing a winning bid either just assume you did and send a couple of hundred pounds or check with Sylv ([email protected] )

The funds raised will be carefully used in maintaining the Class-owned boats, ensuring this larger-than -life fleet continues to bring colour to the Crouch for generations to come.
