Peppermill Cup Success for Buntingford CC

Sunday saw Buntingford CC make the trip to Forest Green for the annual Peppermill Cup fixture, our first visit to Surrey after Forest Green travelled to us for last year's inaugural match.

Following the success of the 2025 fixture, a travelling squad of 12 players made the journey south. A huge thank you goes to Jeff Jones and the BCAT bus for getting us there safely and making the trip possible.

Upon arrival, we were treated to a fantastic BBQ laid on by our hosts, ensuring everyone was well fed before a ball was bowled. Forest Green also provided a superb tea at the innings break, complete with a wonderful selection of food and some outstanding homemade cakes.

Bunt Recover from Early Collapse:
After winning the toss, Buntingford elected to bat first on what appeared to be a good batting surface with short boundaries. However, things did not go according to plan early on.
With the batting order determined by the wheel, Bunt found themselves in serious trouble at 16-5 and facing the prospect of a very short afternoon. Gareth and Callum steadied the ship with an excellent partnership, rebuilding the innings beyond the 50-run mark before Gareth was dismissed for a well-crafted 20.
When Callum departed, the Coote brothers took centre stage. George and Jamie began to free their arms and take advantage of the conditions, finding the boundary regularly and swinging momentum back in Buntingford's favour. Jamie eventually fell for an entertaining 28, while George carried his bat superbly, finishing unbeaten on 51.
Thanks to the late acceleration, Buntingford posted an imposing total of 188 from their 35 overs.

Wickets Shared Around:
The aim with the ball was simple – give everyone the opportunity to bowl three overs and enjoy the occasion. The plan worked perfectly, with wickets shared throughout the innings and almost every bowler getting their name on the scorecard.
The only exception was Andy Ricketts, who after an excellent opening spell of three overs costing just 10 runs, was cruelly denied a wicket. The Forest Green batsman at the death clearly fancied his chances and launched Andy's final over for 23 runs, much to everyone's amusement!
One of the highlights of the day came in the field, where Steve Paola produced a spectacular diving catch on the boundary – a sight reportedly not witnessed at Buntingford Cricket Club for over a decade.
Forest Green were eventually dismissed for 118, handing Buntingford a convincing victory and proving there was still plenty of life left in the Bunt boys despite the long day.

Celebrations Continue:
Following the match, both teams headed to the Old Bulls Head, run by the owners of the Peppermill, whose sponsorship has supported both clubs over the years. A delicious paella was served before the Peppermill Cup trophy presentation rounded off a fantastic day.
The fixture once again proved to be a tremendous success, building on the foundations laid last year and strengthening the friendship between the two clubs.
A huge thank you goes to Chris and everyone at the Peppermill for their continued support of the club and for helping organise another memorable occasion. We look forward to continuing this fantastic tradition for many years to come.

Buntingford CC vs Saffron Walden CC Match Report

After a week off due to rain, Buntingford CC were back in action as they welcomed Saffron Walden CC, with the home side looking to add another victory to their league campaign.

Saffron Walden won the toss and elected to bat first, making a solid start during the opening 10 overs. However, the breakthrough came courtesy of senior veteran A. Ricketts, whose deceptive knuckleball dipped late underneath the bat and crashed into the stumps to claim Buntingford's first wicket. Ricketts struck again later in his spell, finishing with impressive figures of 2-25 from his 9 overs.
At the other end, J. Coote provided excellent support, bowling tight lines with real pace. R. Worby then stepped up admirably in the absence of Buntingford's regular spinner, claiming 3 wickets from his 9 overs. His spell proved to be a turning point as Walden slipped to 104-5 at the halfway stage.

The pressure continued to build thanks to outstanding spells from C. Jordan and S. Hassan, who both picked up two wickets. Jordan was particularly economical, conceding just 19 runs from his 9 overs while bowling three maidens, while Hassan took 2 wickets for only 14 runs from 6.2 overs. Both bowlers showcased their quality and consistency, giving Buntingford complete control of the game.
A special mention must also go to skipper G. Coote, who held onto three comfortable but important catches in the field.
With wickets continuing to tumble and no meaningful partnerships developing, Saffron Walden's innings eventually came to an end on 154 all out from 44.2 overs.

Buntingford were delighted with their bowling and fielding display, having restricted Walden to a modest total. However, low-scoring run chases have historically proved tricky for Buntingford, and they knew the job was far from done.

Openers S. Hassan and O. Townsend began confidently, taking the attack to the Walden bowlers and racing to 40 without loss after 8 overs. Townsend was eventually dismissed, bringing G. Coote to the crease.
Coote played the perfect supporting role while Hassan began to dominate, dispatching boundaries all around the ground. The pair added an excellent 92-run partnership before Coote was trapped LBW for a well-made 31.
With only 25 runs required for victory, R. Worby joined Hassan at the crease. However, Walden bowler J. Brace had other ideas. Brace removed Hassan for a magnificent 78 from 87 balls, including 13 fours and 2 sixes, before striking three more times in quick succession. His remarkable spell of 5-25 from 8 overs sparked a brief collapse and gave Walden a glimmer of hope.

Despite Brace's heroics, the target was simply too small. With just four runs needed and plenty of overs remaining, Worby kept his composure and sealed the victory in style, dispatching the winning delivery to the boundary.
Buntingford reached 155-6 from 34 overs to secure a valuable victory and strengthen their position in the league standings.

It was an excellent all-round team performance, highlighted by Hassan's return to top form and another superb display from the bowling attack. The signs are encouraging as Buntingford look ahead to the next block of fixtures.
Next up, Buntingford face a long trip to Wisbech, where they will be looking to gain revenge for a narrow defeat earlier in the season.

Buntingford 2s Bounce Back with Gritty Victory at Newton

Buntingford 2nd XI travelled to Newton looking to respond after back-to-back defeats, and on a scorching afternoon produced an excellent all-round team performance to secure a hard-fought three-wicket victory.

Having lost the toss, Buntingford were asked to field first. After a couple of loose overs at the start, the opening bowlers quickly found their rhythm and began to tighten the screws. Liam Neill made the breakthrough, removing both Newton openers to leave the hosts 56-2.

Skipper Chris Jordan then brought himself into the attack and ripped through the middle order, helped by some outstanding catches from Buntingford’s younger players in the field. Jordan finished with impressive figures of 8-3-19-3 as Newton struggled to build momentum.

When a partnership began to develop, Neill returned to strike again, ending with excellent figures of 8-1-33-3. The innings was wrapped up in memorable fashion when Rex Cakebread claimed the final wicket, his first in adult cricket, as Newton were bowled out for 139.

In reply, Buntingford made a steady start but suffered an early wobble. Both openers departed caught behind, neither entirely convinced by the decision, and the visitors soon found themselves in trouble at 33-4.

Mark King joined Dave Maurer at the crease and together they steadied the ship superbly. Combining patience with regular boundary-scoring, the pair put together a crucial partnership of 79. King led the charge with a brilliant 53 before eventually falling with the score on 112.

Maurer continued to battle hard before departing for a well-made 26, his highest score for the club, a fact he was keen to remind everyone of. At 120-6, there was still work to do.

Jake Garner and Jonny Grogan kept their composure and settled any remaining nerves, guiding Buntingford towards the target. The scores were level when Garner fell attempting to finish the game in style, but just one ball later Buntingford crossed the line to seal a deserved three-wicket win.

It was a fantastic team effort in difficult conditions. The fielding remained sharp despite the heat, the bowlers stayed disciplined throughout, and the side never lost focus against a dangerous Newton team. Hopefully this result can provide the spark for a strong run of form as the 2s head into the next month of fixtures.

Buntingford CC 1st XI vs Girton CC

Buntingford welcomed Girton to The Green with both sides searching for their second victory of the campaign.

After winning the toss, Buntingford elected to bat first on what appeared to be a good batting wicket under clear skies. Openers Ollie Townsend and Harrison Johnson got the hosts off to a positive start, putting on 40 for the first wicket and laying a solid foundation. Johnson was the first to depart, bringing skipper George Coote to the crease.

Coote immediately settled the innings and, alongside Townsend, guided Buntingford through the middle overs. Townsend continued to find the boundary before eventually departing for 34 with the score moving along nicely. At 90-3 after 20 overs, Buntingford had work to do but remained well placed.

Coote was then supported by Callum Ricketts and Tommy Faherty, whose contributions added valuable runs and momentum to the innings. The pair combined for 36 important runs before Coote’s excellent knock came to an end for 45. With Buntingford at 164-6, they were beginning to look slightly under par on a reliable batting surface and lightning-fast outfield.

However, Teerth Patel and Jamie Coote had other ideas.

The pair transformed the innings with a superb counterattack, taking the game to the Girton bowlers and lifting the scoring rate dramatically. Patel was particularly destructive, blasting an entertaining 52 from just 31 balls, while Jamie Coote provided excellent support with 38 from 33 deliveries, remaining unbeaten at the close. Their partnership propelled Buntingford to a competitive 256-7 from their 45 overs, leaving the home side confident of defending the total.

Girton’s reply began positively as they raced to 40 without significant alarm against the opening attack of Andy Ricketts and Jamie Coote. But Buntingford hit back strongly through Ricketts, whose outstanding spell dragged the game firmly back in the hosts’ favour.

Bowling with relentless accuracy and determination, Ricketts claimed 4-52 from his nine overs, consistently asking questions of the Girton batters and creating opportunities throughout his spell. His efforts gave Buntingford control and placed them firmly in the driving seat.

Girton, however, refused to fold. Callum Ricketts and Greg Garner bowled with discipline through the middle overs, sharing three wickets between them and ensuring the pressure remained on the visitors. As wickets continued to fall, Buntingford sensed victory was within their grasp.

Unfortunately for the home side, one man had other plans.

Girton’s number five, Ryan Davenport, produced a magnificent innings of 122 not out, combining patience, power and composure when his side needed it most. Despite regular wickets falling around him, Davenport stood tall and gradually took the game away from Buntingford, expertly managing the chase and punishing any loose deliveries.

Both teams battled hard until the final stages, but Davenport’s match-winning century proved decisive as Girton reached 259-9 with eight balls remaining to secure a thrilling victory.

It was another frustrating defeat for Buntingford, particularly after posting a strong total and putting themselves in winning positions throughout the contest. There were plenty of positives to take from a spirited performance, but once again the margins proved painfully fine.

The 1st XI will look to bounce back next week as they travel to face Chippenham CC.

MATCH REPORT:

Buntingford 2nd XI opened their season in style at home to Elmdon, grinding out a hard-earned three-wicket victory in a match that ebbed and flowed like a proper early-season tussle.

After losing the toss and being asked to field, Buntingford had to be patient. Elmdon’s openers settled in comfortably, and the first 10 overs passed without a breakthrough, the ball zipping about with intent but refusing to take an edge. Enter skipper CJ, who decided enough was enough. His first over was a bit of a scattergun warm-up, but once he found his rhythm, things changed quickly. He struck the crucial first blow and kept the pressure on, finishing with a tidy and influential 3–45 from his eight overs.

At the other end, Arthur Virgin dialed in his line and length with increasing menace. Like a craftsman tightening the final screws, he dismantled the lower order, claiming 4–34 from his eight and ensuring Elmdon never quite broke free. The visitors were eventually bowled out for 187, a competitive total but one that felt just within reach.

The chase began steadily enough, but wickets fell at awkward intervals, and Buntingford found themselves wobbling at 65–4. The innings needed stitching back together, and that repair job came courtesy of Teerth Patel and Grant Wisson. Grant played the role of calm architect, holding the structure together, while Teerth added flair with some confident, expansive strokeplay. Their partnership of 49 gave Buntingford breathing room before Teerth departed for a well-made 40.

A couple more quick wickets nudged the nerves again, but this game still had one more twist. Young Ollie Hutchinson walked in with the composure of someone who hadn’t read the script. With Grant still anchoring the innings, Ollie began to pepper the boundary, releasing the pressure valve with each confident strike. Together, they compiled an unbeaten stand of 69, steering Buntingford home with two overs to spare. Grant finished 34 not out, while Ollie’s lively 29* proved decisive.

A three-wicket win to kick off the season, built on resilience, partnerships, and just enough flair at the right moments. Plenty to build on, and a clear signal that Buntingford 2nd XI are picking up right where they left off last season.

Buntingford CC vs Godolphin CC

2026 Season Opener Match Report

Buntingford CC began their 2026 campaign against Godolphin CC, looking to build on the heroics of last season and start the new season with a statement victory.

After winning the toss, Buntingford elected to bat first on what appeared to be a solid wicket under glorious sunny skies. Openers O. Townsend and A. West wasted little time settling in, putting together an excellent opening stand of 70 and immediately taking the game to the visitors.

West looked in fine touch before eventually falling while attempting an ambitious shot over mid-on that failed to clear the fielder. Townsend continued to anchor the innings superbly, reaching 40 before losing his wicket. From there, wickets began to tumble regularly, with no other batter able to push on into the twenties.

Just as the innings threatened to unravel completely, C. Ricketts produced a crucial knock of 52, dragging Buntingford to a competitive total of 169 all out.

With what felt like a slightly below-par score on the board, Buntingford knew they would need to be sharp in the field and produce something special with the ball. Memories of last year’s cup final triumph over Godolphin offered belief that another fightback was possible.

Opening bowlers J. Coote and S. Paola started brightly, striking within the first five overs to give Buntingford the ideal start. However, Godolphin responded aggressively, with one of their batters leading the charge with a well-made 53.

C. Ricketts once again stepped up for Buntingford, delivering a sensational spell of 9 overs, 3 wickets for just 23 runs to haul his side back into contention. Z. Ebad chipped in with two wickets, while G. Garner added another as Buntingford kept pushing for a breakthrough.

Despite their efforts, a few late flourishes from the Godolphin lower order proved decisive, guiding the visitors to 170/7 in 37 overs and sealing victory.

It was not the start to the season Buntingford had hoped for, but with a long campaign still ahead, there are plenty of positives to take forward. The cobwebs will soon be shaken off as Buntingford look to bounce back and return to winning ways.
