Another amazing turnout for the Bunessan 5s. This year saw 17 teams competing in the men's competition, and 4 in the women's competition with a good mix of returning squads and debutants.
It was Bunessan Ladies FC that triumphed in the women's competition. The scoreline of their resounding win on the final against Camp Hellcats didn't reflect how closely matched all four teams were during the group stage with some great performances coming from Dervaig Ladies and Tarbert Womenโs Football Team who were making their tournament debut. However, the Bunessan ladies really found form in the semis and the final and we're obviously delighted they kept the trophy in Mull!
In the men's plate, it was a real phoenix rising from the ashes story for the eventual winners, Oban's 2 fish suppers and 2 cans of irn bru, who overcame an undeniably dreadful group stage performance to go on and avenge their 3-1 defeat at the hands of Iona FC earlier in the tournament, winning the final against the same team on penalties. Special mention should go to Iona's young goalkeeper William McLellan who made a string of impressive stops throughout the tournament.
In the Gold Cup final, it was the youngsters (and Daniel Watson ), Dondy Holmes Royal Academy, who came out on top against last year's winners, Class of 2002. It seemed like the gruelling battles that Class of 2002 had in the quarter and semi finals had taken their toll on their 'seasoned' legs and the Dondies came out on top with a solid 3-1 victory. Unsurprisingly, Dondy Holmes Royal Academy saw two individual prizes go to their team with Bob White winning the Player of the Tournament, and Leon MacLean winning the Mull & Iona Young Player of the Tournament.
Finally... A massive thanks to the tournament sponsors, Inverlussa Marine Services , to all the volunteers helping to get the pitches in top condition, the refs on the day, those staffing the BBQ and Bar, and West Coast Motors Group for providing a later bus that allowed teams to fulfil all fixtures.
We're going to take a well earned rest now, but keep an eye out for other events that may be happening between now and next August!
