Barnes blasts Bugbrooke to T20 Cup victory
Bugbrooke Cricket Club picked up their first points of the NCL T20 Cup campaign with an emphatic 54-run victory away at Spencer Bruerne on Monday evening.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, Bugbrooke produced an excellent batting display to post 198/6 from their 20 overs. After useful contributions throughout the top and middle order had laid the foundations, Reece Barnes took control of the innings with a superb 65 from just 40 deliveries, including five fours and four sixes. Arriving at number five, Barnes built brilliantly on the work already done and accelerated the scoring during the latter stages to propel Bugbrooke towards a formidable total.
The innings featured valuable contributions throughout. Afaq Babar made 25, Mobi Khawaja added 24 and Jumshaid Farooq provided a blistering cameo of 23 from just nine balls. Hassan Ehsan Awan then supplied the finishing touches with an unbeaten 22 from 12 deliveries as Bugbrooke closed on 198/6.
Defending a sizeable target, Bugbrooke’s bowlers ensured Spencer Bruerne were always under pressure. George Briddon produced the standout performance, claiming an excellent 5-17 from his four overs. His spell removed the backbone of the home side’s batting line-up and swung the game decisively in Bugbrooke’s favour.
Adil Mahmood provided outstanding support with 3-34, while Afaq Babar and James Garrard each picked up a wicket as Spencer Bruerne were bowled out for 144.
While Barnes’ excellent half-century provided the headline performance with the bat, the victory was built on contributions throughout the innings before being secured by a superb bowling display led by Briddon and Mahmood. The win earns Bugbrooke their first three points of the group stage and keeps their T20 Cup campaign firmly on track.
