📢 WestLAN – Final Event

Hey everyone,

After a lot of thought, we wanted to let you know that WestLAN will be ending after the February event.

The LAN party has been running for around 25 years (I think), and I’ve personally been attending for 23 years and 75 events, starting back in 2003. A lot has changed since those early days, and very few people from back then are still attending — I can probably count them on one hand.

Attendance has dropped over the years, and there are a bunch of reasons why LANs are harder to attend now. People are busy or have family obligations. Transport and travel can be difficult. Gaming at home is more comfortable and convenient. Dedicating 48 hours to a LAN weekend isn’t feasible for most. And some attendees don’t know anyone who goes, making it harder to join in.

We ran a survey recently and got 38 responses, only 3 of which were from new people outside the regular community. This shows how tough it is to attract new attendees. The younger gaming crowd just aren’t interested in LAN events, and their gaming tastes, styles, and platforms often don’t match what a LAN provides.

On top of this, the cost of running events — hall hire, storage, equipment, and everything else — means that smaller or less frequent LANs aren’t possible. Increasing prices to cover costs would likely reduce attendance further and wouldn’t feel fair to everyone.

That said, the final WestLAN in February will be a chance to come together, celebrate the community, and make some amazing memories one last time. Let’s make it a proper send-off! 🎉
