Butterfly began as an attempt to make breaststroke faster. The arms came out of the water, the dolphin kick was added and, eventually, it became a completely separate stroke – making its Olympic debut in Melbourne in 1956.

A faster version of breaststroke somehow turned into one of swimming’s toughest challenges – and the Marmite of swimming strokes. You either love it or hate it. 🦋

🤓 Random Fact Wednesday!

An Olympic pool is 50 metres long and 25 metres wide.

At a depth of two metres, it holds around 2.5 million litres of water.

That's enough to make roughly 10 million cups of tea...
..although we wouldn't recommend putting the kettle on. The chlorine might ruin the flavour. 😂☕

🏊 Swimming Tip Tuesday

Want to improve your front crawl catch and pull?

Here's a simple drill to try next time you're in the pool.

Cross your legs and swim front crawl without using a pull buoy.

Why?

By taking your legs out of the equation, your arms have to do all the work. That helps you concentrate on your catch, feel how you're pulling through the water and figure out how to pull more water with each stroke.

It might feel a little strange at first... but that's often when the learning happens!

Give it a go and let us know how you get on. 💙

💙 Why swim as part of a team?

Of course, swimming makes you fitter and stronger.

But the benefits don't stop there.

Research into organised sport suggests that a young person's wellbeing is shaped not just by the exercise itself, but also by the people around them. Encouragement from coaches, friendships with teammates, a sense of belonging and being part of a supportive environment can all have a positive impact.

At Buckingham Swans, we're competitive, but we put the person first and their progress second. We want every swimmer to enjoy the journey as much as the results.

Think your child is ready to take the plunge?

We're currently offering free trials on:
🏊 Monday: 8–9pm
🏊 Saturday: 7–8am

💙 Did you know?

Your heart starts working differently before you even take your first stroke.

When you're immersed in water, the pressure gently pushes blood from your arms and legs back towards your chest. That means more blood returns to your heart, which is one of the reasons swimming is such a unique form of exercise.

Pretty amazing what simply getting in the pool can do!

If you (or your child) love swimming and would like to take it a step further, why not come along for a free trial?

We're currently welcoming confident swimmers aged 9+ (Stage 8 or above), as well as adult Masters swimmers.

Want to improve your breaststroke kick?

Try practising the 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱-𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗸𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸.

Why? Because lying on your back means you don't have to think about your breathing, so you can put all your focus into getting your kick just right.

💧 If you're just starting out:
✔ Tuck your chin so you can keep an eye on what your legs are doing.
✔ Make sure your knees don't pop above the surface.
✔ Turn your ankles out.
✔ Aim for a smooth, symmetrical kick.

💧 If you're a more experienced swimmer:
✔ Keep a straight line from your abs to your knees.
✔ Let the kick happen behind your body.
✔ Bring your feet together with your toes pointed during recovery.
✔ Your heels should come close to your fingertips during the kick.
✔ Stay level and stable throughout.

Sometimes it's the smallest technical tweaks that make the biggest difference.

🏊 Fun Fact Friday!

Ever wondered why Olympic swimming pools have 10 lanes, but only 8 are used for racing?

The two outside lanes are left empty to help reduce waves bouncing back off the pool walls, giving swimmers calmer water and a fairer race. Clever, isn't it?

Our sessions may not be in a 10-lane Olympic pool, but that doesn't stop us chasing personal bests, improving our technique and having plenty of fun along the way. 💙

Have a fantastic weekend, everyone!

🏊 How do you become a better swimmer?

There's no magic trick.

Just like runners need miles under their feet, swimmers need lengths under their belts.

The more time you spend in the water, the more comfortable, efficient and confident you become.

So what's the secret?

🍽️ Eat
😴 Sleep
🏊 𝗦𝗪𝗜𝗠
🔁 Repeat

It's not glamorous, but it works.

And the good news? Every length you swim today helps you become a better swimmer tomorrow.

Know someone whose life revolves around swim bags, goggles and the smell of chlorine? 😆 Give this post a share or follow our page to help us reach more local swimmers and swimming families. 💙

🏊 Could you help the next generation of swimmers reach their potential?

We're looking for a volunteer swimming coach to join the coaching team at Buckingham Swans.

Whether you're already qualified or just thinking about getting into coaching, we'd love to hear from you.

✅ Flexible commitment – you're part of a team, so there's no expectation to coach every session
✅ A great opportunity for students studying PE, coaching, sports development or similar subjects
✅ We'll fund your coaching qualifications if you don't already have your Level 2
✅ Help our swimmers develop their technique, confidence and love of the sport

📍 Swan Pool, Buckingham
🗓 Training sessions: MON, 8–9pm | THU, 8–9pm | SAT, 7–8am

You don't need to be the fastest swimmer in the pool, but you do need to be a competent swimmer who can help others improve their technique.

Minimum ages set by Swim England:
• 16+ for Assistant Coaches
• 17+ for independent coaching

Interested?

📧 Contact our Head Coach at [email protected]

And if coaching isn't for you, please consider sharing this post. Your share could help us find someone who'll make a real difference to local swimmers. 💙
