A great day at the Dewerstone with a Royal Marine from Bickley Barracks, 42 Commando.

The focus of the morning was learning safe seconding skills and building a solid foundation for trad climbing. By the afternoon, he was ready to step up and lead his first outdoor rock climbs.

It was impressive how quickly he took on board the skills and applied them with confidence.

Learning to become independent climbers, this short course focused on bottom roping set ups - gear placement and anchors. It’s great to have the knowledge to get out trad rock climbing this summer!

We offer ‘Learn the Ropes’ courses of various lengths, to teach you bottom roping, top roping, and abseiling set-ups, as well as the complementary skills involved.

Once you get into caving, you realise just how many amazing places there are to explore in the UK and internationally.

St Cuthbert’s Swallet is the second longest cave system in Somerset after Swildon’s Hole, with complex and varied passageways and super-stunning calcite formations. Huge curtains, 6m wide gour pools, canyons, cave pearls, and delicate crystals… a lot of wow moments!

Start your caving journey with us in Devon and you never know where it will take you next!

Fantastic news for the climbing wall at the Life Centre in Plymouth! Well done to everyone for raising your voice, and helping this valuable community resource survive. Now let’s support it and go climbing!

This week, I met with the leadership of Plymouth Active Leisure to discuss the proposal for a soft play at the Life Centre, which would result in the closure of the climbing wall.

Hundreds of people have taken part in the engagement process and shared their views on the proposal.

We cannot ignore the strength of feeling from residents, and, in light of that feedback, Plymouth Active Leisure will not be moving forward with these proposals. This means that the climbing wall will not be closed.

Instead, we will work together to bring forward alternative plans to continue to improve the service offered to users of all our facilities. This includes engaging in conversation with regional and national climbing organisations to see what assistance they may be able to provide to improve the climbing experience at the Life Centre.

Plymouth Active Leisure is our asset, and we have a responsibility to look after it. Our ultimate goal is – and always has been – its financial viability. It is an organisation which we are proud of; one which provides so many different opportunities for Plymouth people between the Life Centre, Mount Wise Swimming Pools, Tinside Lido and Plympton Gym.

However, the facilities offered can only thrive if they are supported by local people. It is clear that usage of the climbing wall needs to increase, and I am looking forward to contributing to conversations about how we achieve that. I would encourage people in Plymouth to vote with their feet and ensure that Plymouth Active Leisure’s facilities are financially viable, and available to local people for many years to come.

I always aim to be a councillor who listens, who adjusts and who acts. Since I was elected, I have tried to do politics differently. I don’t think enough of our politicians spend enough time listening to the people who elected them to represent them – and this becomes even more important when decisions are controversial.

I am grateful to every person who contributed to the engagement process, who emailed me and wrote to me – I hope you feel your voices have been heard.

With its sparkling flowstones, cave pearls, crystal gour pools, stalactites and stalagmites, Baker’s Pit is a beautiful, sporting cave.
