Freezing fast and furious at Fernie was the theme of the day !
With many many changes through the week, mostly due to dreaded abscesses I held my breath that I had the right people in the right teams and enough of them at that! seemed we'd cracked it! But to then have it topped off with the clocks going forward could I be sure of everyone turning up on time? All I can say is thank goodness for chat groups to remind people!!!(they all did)
Courses were reported as lovely with good ground and fair tests across the levels its fair to say the novice course did not prove a favourable one for the Rascals this week; not one of the teams managed to complete a round with more than a duo crossing the finish line. A rather dramatic and incredibly scary final fence not being cleared left us all somewhat apprehensive witnessing a horrible fall for Abbie but are pleased to report the emerald green must have bought us some luck as she was very fortunate to not have incurred any serious injury. With some stoppers some fallers and even a non starter for the novice crew it definitely was not our day.
We moved on to the open and saw the welcome return of Holly to the Hop Idols, joining Kate Freya and Sally. Watching them from probably the best viewing vantage point of all the courses on the circuit they were sailing across the course with ease in a fab four formation and hopping into the pen before we knew it. Now halfway, and hopeful of more of the same for the remainder of the course disaster struck as the tricky Trakehner took out Ted! But hey, its 3 to finish right? Well the Water jump saw to that not happening as Freya and Barney took a dunking of a mammoth nature! Gymnastic aquaequitation anyone?? hmmmm.... a new sport in the making especially seeing as a few other teams had some epic tryouts for it too!! Holly and Kate carried on their way and both came home unscathed.
By now the freezing rain was biting to the bone! it was raw! However with 3 Inter teams to run there was no early bath for anyone else!
First up saw Tabs leading the Beaglin' Rascals Kick On once again on such a super little mare with indeed the heart of lion (but watching the headcam footage a few hupps would suggest there's some Lea influence creeping in too!!) Great to have Lily back out and Piko showed that a winter of hunting certainly proves the point that it is definitely superb preparation for team chasing! Sadly at the 11th hour an acute lameness for Meg's boy would have left the team as a trio, but team chasing is a family and thankfully the Wishful's Simon Coady stepped in, albeit not for a run at his normal speed! Benny completely the line up, asking do I have to wear the colours....I've soooo many layers on if I take them off I'll be cold...even I couldn't be that cruel!
A solid ride saw the first Rascals team of the day complete a round with all 4 team members crossing the finish line of a well dressed and presented course that, whilst offering lots of questions actually rode beautifully.
Closely following on the Beaglin' Rascals fed on Radiance Gold consisted of a different line up this week with Charlotte leading the team of Amy Hayley and Meghan, & what a line up they were too! Fab team work and horses well suited to run together saw both riders and horses gain in confidence around the track, leaving them sitting in 3rd place for some time. They were hopeful of a frilly, however as 4 teams went quicker, a 7th place finish was still fantastic for them and we look forward to them being out in force again next week!
Finally, saving the best till last step up the Fox Offs.....no need for the dulcet tones of Tina shouting 'Go oonn Bethan' this week! They were literally flying round, looking very likely to take the lead until a mishap lost them valuable seconds, the commentator ensured the spectators got a giggle as he described their actions as' what could only be described as quite frankly a right c**k up!' A 8th place though with all 4 coming home they had all had a very enjoyable spin round this wonderful course, despite the weather and as well as being without Dashing Danny who is in need of a little break, it was great to see that Lucy and Hattie certainly stepped up to the plate!
Now if anyone wouldn't mind having a word with the weatherman for next year we wouldn't say no to a spring sunshine sortie please!
