If you have two minutes you could help spread a little joy and send a gift my way! ๐ŸŽ

Iโ€™ve submitted not one but two proposals to speak at the SXSW London festival in June next year, one of which is with the fabulous Beth Stallwood (the legend behind ).

In line with SXSWโ€™s novel, creative and community focused approach, nearly half of the decision about who is selected to speak is decided via a public vote. Which is where you come in...

๐Ÿ”ฅ Our joint pitch is for a suitably spicy fireside chat called:

So many leadership books focus onย the big and the strategic and overlook the micro changes that aggregate to make us extraordinary people leaders. Today is the day! Do Sweat the Small Stuff is out NOW on Kindle, available for today only at just 99p (99 cents in the US).

From the back cover:

โ€œYou may think itโ€™s small stuff, but it has a big impact.

Great leadership is about people: connecting with them and inspiring them to perform at their best. But leaders under pressure tend to focus on tasks, to-do lists and deadlines.

The result? Teams are disengaged, performance and productivity are below expectations, morale is low.

Building relationships isnโ€™t a one-off task. It happens through every single interaction, and we arenโ€™t paying those everyday moments nearly enough attention.

Do Sweat the Small Stuff challenges you to notice and own the profound impact of your micro-interactions. To explore how your speaking and listening, your habits and your behaviours affect those around you, whether you realize or not. Finally, it reveals how to reinvent those interactions to reshape how you show up as a leader and build trusting, productive relationships with your people.

Sarah Langslow distils more than two decades of hands-on experience building effective leadership skills and behaviours in the corporate and sporting world and as an executive coach into an actionable plan for sustainable transformation.โ€

A change is as good as a restโ€ฆ

Another stop on my exploratory tour of inspirational places to write. Today itโ€™s the National Art Library in the V&A.

Might have gone too far today, the temptation to just sit and stare at the view is strong ๐Ÿคฃ

Time to get off FB and get down to some writing of โ€œDo sweat the small stuffโ€.

In a way this lesson sums up all of the other nine....

Care about excellence, stop worrying about being perfect.

Care about the people who matter to you, not those who don't.

Care about being in action and playing big, not about whether you always get it right or feel ready.

Give a lot of f***s about you and your needs.

Etc.

We have a huge amount that competes for our time, attention and energy. We simply cannot give everyone what they want.

That means understanding what's important, learning to say no, and being OK with other people not liking that, or our decisions, or indeed us as a result.

In that spirit, yes this post is a bit sweary, and yes, I'm aware not everyone will like that. That's fine. I'm a bit sweary sometimes and I'm definitely not for everyone.

What I know is that if I show up as me, I serve powerfully, I offer ideas and content that aim to provoke, inform, challenge or sometimes just make people laugh, and I do my best with everyone I work with, that's what matters.

If I do that, I'll attract the right people and repel the rest. That's a good result, for me and for them.

I implore you to save your f***s for the things that really matter too.

Iโ€™m guessing most of you would answer yes.

But do your actions back it up?

Do you focus your time and attention on what is really important?
Do you work to eliminate what isnโ€™t important?
Do you say no regularly?
Do you reflect on how you spend your time?
Do you allow othersโ€™ priorities to take over your day, so your stuff always comes second?

My guess is most of you would also fall foul of some of these. Me too.

To spend our time well we have to know whatโ€™s important. If you havenโ€™t reflected on that for a while, take some time to do that. Look at what you spend your time on and how that matches up to what is important to you. And if itโ€™s off, change it.

This is especially important as a leader. A client said to me this week โ€œI assume people only bring stuff to me that is worth my timeโ€. Unfortunately this is a faulty assumption. We have to be clear on whatโ€™s worthy of our time first, then be clear with those around us. The benefit is that these conversations are opportunities to train and develop our teams skills, and encourage them to take ownership and initiative.

Iโ€™m spending some time this week thinking about how I want to spend my time. I always find September a time of renewal, the โ€œnew school yearโ€ habit runs deep!

What difference would it make if you did that too?

The word selfish has a bad rep, understandably so given its precise meaning:

"seeking or concentrating on one's own advantage, pleasure, or well-being without regard for others."

For a long time it was something I resisted at all costs. That as a business owner or indeed just as a human being, I shouldn't make it about me, in fact I should do everything to make it about the other person.

If you'd seen my calendar when I first started to coach....

"I'm a bit busy that day, could we do our coaching call at 8pm?" "Sure, no problem, I can do that", I said as I seethed with annoyance that I would be working late into the evening.

I wasn't willing to set boundaries, to create a business that worked for me as I was so afraid if I did my clients would leave. It was the same in my previous jobs, saying yes to things I didn't have time for, because I shouldn't say no, or someone wouldn't like me if I did.

And where did it leave me? Tired, overworked and honestly pretty pi**ed off.

I'd gone so far towards being selfless that I'd lost my own needs in the equation.

So I have reclaimed the word selfish. Not to have no regard for others, but to have equal or greater regard for my own wants and needs. Because if I don't look after me, no one else will. The same is true for you.

It's OK to have needs and wants, and it's OK to get them met. Sometimes other people won't like that, but that doesn't mean it is wrong (see earlier lesson about not needing to be liked...).

Where do you deny your own needs? What would happen if you put yourself first for once?

Still buzzing from leading a great session at the Council for Advancement and Support of Education Conference this morning, exploring how to navigate challenging conversations with a group of senior leaders in educational advancement. Thank you for inviting me.

Itโ€™s great to have permission to go deep, and even better when those attending are ready and willing to go there with you. Some real light bulb moments and a lot of appreciation for the space to reflect and learn about their leadership.

And how I have missed in person events, it is SO GOOD to be back! The energy is like nothing else.

Now for one of my favourite train journeys home, down the East coast mainline. Best office views I ever have ๐Ÿ™‚

Time to get some more speaking opportunities scheduled - do get in touch if youโ€™d like to explore what I could offer for your team or eventโ€ฆ

So this one is definitely filed under "work in progress". One where I understand the lesson on an intellectual level, but still struggle to put it into practice.

I think it is a particularly challenging lesson for high achievers. When we grow up getting everything right, passing exams, winning matches, getting straight A's, failure doesn't enter our experience, it is unknown.

And what falls into the unknown, often becomes the awful. Failure becomes something to fear. For me, it was always a source of shame, attention on me not for doing well, but for screwing up.

Little did I realise how little other people cared, or were even paying attention!

We all know we learn from failing, usually we learn more than the stuff that works well as we are forced to acknowledge the flaws. But it doesn't mean it feels good.

So I still resist.

Someone asked me recently what problems I have in my business. I said, "Well, the odd late payment or client who cancels, a few leads that ghost." Hardly earth-shattering.

It was reflected to me that if I want a bigger business - which I do - I need bigger problems. Because when I play big, it won't always work out.

Where are you afraid to play big in case it doesn't work out?
