At Grenville House we spend a lot of time in and around the sea, whether it is Coasteering, Kayaking, Paddleboarding, Canoeing or Raft Building, we try to share our knowledge and top tips on staying safe in this environment with the groups that we take out.
The importance of communication!
1. Make sure you carry a means of communication with you, whether it is a mobile phone or a VHF radio or even better, both!
- Check it is charged and you know where to get signal.
- Carry it in something waterproof, a waterproof phone case or dry bag
- Know how to use it and which numbers to call to get assistance.
2. Let people know your plan of where you are getting in the water, where you are going to and how long you plan to be and who you are with.
- Let them know you are back safely
- Especially important if you are going out by yourself
3. If you are planning a longer more adventurous trip around the coast, it is wise to inform the local coastguard of your journey.
- Include timings and route plan
- Contact them just before you begin
- Contact them once you have arrived at your destination
- Let them know if there are any changes to your plan
