Grenville House Outdoor Education Centre

Grenville House Outdoor Education Centre Grenville House is an Outdoor Education centre that provides residential and non-residential experiences.

Grenville House was built in 1863 founded by the 'British Seaman's Boys' Home' charity as an orphanage. Social changes saw the need for Grenville House diminish, leading to its temporary closure in 1988. Two years later it re-opened as the Nautical Venture Centre continuing its work with young people, particularly local schools. In 1995 the name finally became established as Grenville House Outdoo

r Education Centre. Since then continued growth and an increasing reputation both regionally and nationally has seen expansion in all aspects of the operation. Major ongoing investment in the buildings, the facilities and the development of Outdoor activities has led to Grenville House building a core base of schools, Colleges and Youth and Community groups coming to use the Centre annually. Initially the Centre developed as an associate member of the Devon Discovery group of outdoor centres forming close links with both Devon County Council Education Department and Plymouth City Council. Whilst still acknowledged by them, Torbay Council, which now has unitary status actively promotes Grenville House in the Torbay area. Consequently the majority of schools coming to the Centre are from within the county boundary of Devon. Since 2006 Devon and Torbay Councils have recognised Grenville House as a leading provider of outdoor education in Devon and consequently we are one of only a handful of establishments holding Category 'A' status.

At Grenville House we spend a lot of time in and around the sea, whether it is Coasteering, Kayaking, Paddleboarding, Canoeing or Raft Building, we try to share our knowledge and top tips on staying safe in this environment with the groups that we take out.

The importance of communication!

1. Make sure you carry a means of communication with you, whether it is a mobile phone or a VHF radio or even better, both!
- Check it is charged and you know where to get signal.
- Carry it in something waterproof, a waterproof phone case or dry bag
- Know how to use it and which numbers to call to get assistance.

2. Let people know your plan of where you are getting in the water, where you are going to and how long you plan to be and who you are with.
- Let them know you are back safely
- Especially important if you are going out by yourself

3. If you are planning a longer more adventurous trip around the coast, it is wise to inform the local coastguard of your journey.
- Include timings and route plan
- Contact them just before you begin
- Contact them once you have arrived at your destination
- Let them know if there are any changes to your plan

Minimum child age to book?
- Our sessions are capable for children aged from 8 and above. Children of this age can be booked onto our sessions without an adult taking part, we would just ask for an adult to be nearby if needed.
- We can take out younger children with adult supervision (adult taking part) and under the circumstances we can fit the child in our safety equipment and the child is wanting to take part. Contact us either the website, email or phone to discuss.

Wanting a session that's not currently available online?
- As a residential centre, there are some weeks over the holidays that we have groups staying with us that need our instructor team to run their activity programme. This is why some days of the summer are not bookable.
- If there is a session you would like that's not available then please contact us with the planned activity and your availability and we will always try to accommodate if possible.

Weather changes?
- Our centre runs activities all year round. We have equipment available if the weather changes unexpectedly and can run our sessions through majority of conditions.
- The wind can affect our water sessions often, we will plan the session to the conditions on the day. In extreme wind conditions, we may suggest a different session for the conditions.

We hope to see you soon!

With the hot weather and the summer holidays upon us, we are sharing some water safety info that's useful for all water users! 🌊

We are out and about regularly with groups on our variety of water sports sessions. Before each and every session our instructors take a look at the weather forecasts and conditions we can see out of the window at Grenville House. This helps us to make safe decisions on what to do and where to go with our groups, or whether we need to change our plans.

1. Being aware of the wind is a really important factor in this decision making. Both the strength of it, the gusts and the direction can make a difference if you are out in the sea.

2. Look at multiple weather reports to get an idea of the predicted conditions. Also look at what you can see in real life.

3. Identify where your areas of shelter will be for the direction of it. If there is no shelter from the wind, is it wise to go out?

4. Offshore wind can be hazardous!

5. Wind which is travelling across a larger space of water will create swell and waves, which can make paddling a canoe, kayak or paddleboard more tricky.

6. When planning your day, try to go upwind first while you have energy. If you go downwind first, it maybe hard to get back if you are tired and trying to paddle into the wind.

Wanting more advice to keep yourself and others safe while on the water? Book yourself on a Grenville House Adventure Paddling session, where our experienced instructors can guide you through all the safety protocols we use every day.
