Too many teeth?

On the trail, you will always benefit from a change in sprocket size, at the front or the rear, to give a different power delivery than for the road

If you lose 1 front tooth, you will get better ratios for the trail.
It's the same as adding 3 to the rear.

Factory specs for sprockets are always a compromise for road and off road riding - around 15/45
15 teeth front
45 teeth rear.
This gives a ratio of 1:3

You need more low down power and better low speed torque to get off the clutch in the slow rocky stuff.

The TrailVidz Freewind 650 will be getting a 14 teeth front sprocket for the next outing. It will allow me to avoid slipping the clutch in the technical stuff and give torque lower down. I will lose top speed, but on that bike will never actually find out!

See this link and experiment with size changes.

Tip: if you go up 3 at the rear you will need a longer chain.
So, experiment first with a -1 at the front for the same effect and keep your current chain.

Smaller front sprockets wear chains quicker. So when it's time to change, go back up to factory front and buy +3 in the rear and a longer chain.

This one change could transform your road machine to the off-tarmac precision tool you need.

Of course, you could go -1/+3 at the same time...if you want to wheelie everywhere.
