Cleve RFC

Cleve RFC Cleve RFC Cleve Rugby Football Club was formed in 1922 as “Cleve R.F.C. Downend”. It was at this time that the club became known simply as “Cleve R.F.C”.

They played their first game in a field in Staple Hill, which is now Staple Hill Park. The club later moved to Vassells Park in Fishponds, the players changing in the back room of the Full Moon Public House. The club purchased a wooden pavilion in November 1934 for £200. When Cleve were forced to move to Bromley Heath Road in Downend in 1939, because of a housing development, their wooden pavilion

went with them. In 1947 further land was purchased and was farmed by club members, as a source of income. Eventually, to meet the growing local interest in rugby football, more pitches were developed. Then, between 1969 and 1971, members added more facilities, which carried the club through the next 25 years. The club badge is based of the coat of arms of the Cave Estate, from whom the ground in Downend was purchased and the ears of wheat acknowledge the club’s farming activity after the War. The club motto ‘We sow to reap’ also records these early events but also reflects the club’s commitment to providing rugby facilities and coaching for children from the age of 6. The next milestone in Cleve’s history was the club’s move to its new clubhouse and grounds ‘The Hayfields’in September 1997. The club runs 3 senior sides on Saturdays and all mini and junior levels, from under 7’s to colts on Sundays. There is within the club, a loyal membership and very social atmosphere. At Cleve we are committed to providing a centre of excellence for the playing of rugby football, whilst further enhancing the unique spirit of friendship at the club. In doing so, we seek to provide the local community with a focal point for rugby and other sporting and social activities, for the enjoyment of all involved.

🏌️‍♂️ Another fantastic Golf Day in memory of our great friend, Buzz.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success. From those who organised and participated, to all those who came along to support. Special thanks to The Kendleshire Golf Club for once again being fantastic hosts and helping create such a memorable day.

Days like these are a wonderful reminder of the friendships, stories and memories that continue to bring us together in Buzz’s honour.

County Honours🎖️

A huge congratulations from everyone at the club to Matty Lynch and Harry O’Donnell, who proudly represented the Somerset County Men’s 1st XV today as they travelled to Devon.

A brilliant achievement for both lads and thoroughly deserved recognition for the hard work, commitment and quality they’ve shown throughout the season.

We’re incredibly proud to see Cleve represented on the county stage and know both boys wore the shirt with pride. 👏

Well done lads!

🖤❤️ Player Renewals ❤️🖤

We’re delighted to confirm that Rich Bullough, Nick Coe and Matty Lynch have all committed for the 2026/27 season. 🔥

Three absolute lynchpins of this squad (excuse the pun 👀) and three players who embody everything this group is about.

Week in, week out these lads set the standard through their work rate, physicality, leadership and commitment to the badge. Whether it’s doing the hard yards in the tight, leading the energy around the group or stepping up in the big moments, they are massive figures both on and off the pitch. 💪

Their experience and influence within the squad cannot be overstated, and having all three back for another year is a huge boost heading into the new campaign.

The standards stay high. The engine room stays strong. And The Hayfields will be better for it. ❤️🖤

Massive to have you lads back 👊

🖤❤️ Here To Stay ❤️🖤

After a stop-start first year at the club, we’re buzzing to confirm that Jake Campey will be back in Cleve colours for the 2026/27 season.

Unfortunately, registration complications meant Jake never really got the opportunity to make his mark last season, but with all that now behind him, we’re excited to see him properly unleashed at The Hayfields. 💥

Jake arrives with a seriously impressive rugby CV and experience gained all over the world. From serving and playing rugby with the British Army, to competing in the USA with Dallas RFC, he’s played the game at a high level across multiple formats and countries. 🌍

A dangerous back, Jake has featured on elite 7s and 10s stages including tournaments in Bermuda, France and Portugal, representing sides such as Rhinos Rugby Academy, Deutscher Rugby-Verband and the Balkans Honey Badgers.

Having extensive experience in England’s National 2 competition with Bury St Edmunds and Old Recliffians, Jake adds even more quality and experience to the squad heading into the new campaign.

Now fully settled and ready to go, we can’t wait to see what he brings in a Cleve shirt this year. 🔥

Good to have you with us 👊

🖤❤️ 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗬𝗘𝗥 𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗔𝗟𝗦 ❤️🖤

With well over 300 1st XV caps between them, Louis Morgan, Lewis Beer and Big W***y Warman have all committed their futures to the club for the 2026/27 season 🔥

Three top blokes who bring a huge amount of experience, leadership and quality both on and off the pitch. Whether it’s setting standards at training, helping drive the culture within the squad or putting their bodies on the line every Saturday, these boys represent exactly what the club is all about. 💪

Having players like this around the group is massive, not only for performances on the pitch but for the younger lads coming through the pathway as well. Their commitment to the badge, the team and the never goes unnoticed. ❤️🖤

We’re incredibly lucky to have all three back for another season and we can’t wait to see them back out there in maroon, black and white once again.
