Your shoulders are probably somewhere near your ears.

You just haven't noticed yet.

Burnout doesn't always begin with exhaustion.

Sometimes it starts with tension your body has been holding onto all day.

If you've been rushing from one meeting to the next, your shoulders have probably crept upwards without you even realising.

Here's your 30-second reset:

➡️ Roll your shoulders backwards 30 times before your next Teams call.

That's it.

Less than a minute.
No equipment.
No excuses.

It's a simple way to release tension, improve posture, breathe more deeply and remind your nervous system that it doesn't have to stay in "fight or flight" all day.

When was the last time you consciously relaxed your shoulders?

💚 Save this post so it becomes part of your workday routine.
Because burnout prevention doesn't always start with taking a week off.
Sometimes it starts by moving your shoulders away from your ears.

Nobody reaches retirement and wishes they'd answered a few more emails.

For years I treated rest like a reward.

Something I would earn once I'd finished the next project.

Hit the next target.

Cleared the next deadline.

The problem was there was always another one.

Burnout doesn't just affect how you feel today.

It affects the health, relationships and quality of life you'll have years from now.

That's why I no longer see movement, recovery, sleep and boundaries as luxuries.

They're investments.

Every walk. 🚶‍♂️‍➡️

Every strength session. 💪

Every movement snack. 💃

Every time I choose to pause rather than push. ⏸️

I'm not just looking after today's version of me.

I'm looking after 60-year-old me.

70-year-old me.

80-year-old me.

What's one thing you're doing today that your future self will thank you for?

Burnout doesn't always look like failure...

Sometimes it looks like Employee of the Month.

I didn’t get warned.
I got praised.

🥇 Awards.
💐 Flowers.
🏆 A shiny trophy.
🍾 A magnum of expensive champagne.
💷 Promises of bonuses.

Every time I pushed harder, I was told how brilliantly I was doing.

So I kept going.
Longer hours.
Less sleep.
More pressure.
Ignoring the headaches, exhaustion, anxiety and the constant feeling that my body was waving a red flag I refused to look at.

Until eventually… it broke me.

After my accident, one comment stuck with me more than anything:

“When are we going to get the old Shona back?”

But the truth is, the “old Shona” was the problem.
She thought worth came from overworking.
From proving herself.
From being the one who could handle everything.

This is why burnout is so dangerous in high performers.
Because the behaviour often gets rewarded long before it gets questioned.

And by the time someone finally notices you’re struggling…
you’re already running on empty.

We don’t need more people applauding exhaustion.
We need leaders who stop celebrating survival mode as success.

Have you ever been rewarded for pushing yourself too far?

For years, I thought burnout happened to other people.

The people who couldn't cope.

The people who weren't resilient enough.

The people who needed to "toughen up."

Then burnout nearly cost me everything.

My health.
My confidence.
My career.
Almost my life.

That experience changed the direction of my life forever.

Today, I help organisations prevent burnout before it becomes a crisis.

Not with fruit bowls.
Not with wellbeing weeks.
Not with tick-box initiatives.

But by helping leaders and teams spot the warning signs early, build healthier habits, create psychological safety, and protect both people and performance.

Over the last few months, I've been quietly building something new, with the amazing support from Mike Cottam.

A place that brings together everything I do:
✔ Keynote speaking
✔ Burnout prevention training
✔ Psychological safety workshops
✔ Movement Snacks®
✔ Leadership development
✔ Resources, blogs and tools

Most importantly, it explains why prevention will always be more powerful than cure.

I'd love you to take a look.

Most people think burnout starts with stress.

It doesn’t.

It starts with the tiny daily choices that slowly drain your energy, focus and resilience without you even noticing.

Skipping meals.
Living off caffeine.
Eating “healthy” food that still leaves you hungry an hour later.
Rewarding exhaustion with sugar because your brain is desperate for quick energy.

This took me years to understand after burnout nearly cost me my life.

Now I focus on simple habits that support my brain, body and energy instead of fighting against them.

This pistachio protein ice cream is one of them (and perfect for the warmer days 🌞)

High protein.
Low sugar.
Actually filling.
And it stops that evening “I need something sweet” crash without leaving you feeling sluggish afterwards.

Because burnout prevention isn’t just meditation apps and motivational quotes.

It’s the small things you repeatedly do when no one is watching.

The food you fuel your brain with.
The movement snacks you stack into your day.
The boundaries you protect.
The recovery you stop postponing.

You cannot perform at your best on an empty battery.

What’s one small habit that genuinely helps your energy and focus when life gets busy?

If your workplace is ready to stop glorifying exhaustion and start improving focus, performance and resilience in a practical way, message me about my burnout prevention talks, workshops and Movement Snacks sessions.

Most workplace wellbeing fails because it starts after the damage is already done.

At Edwards Vacuum, we tackled burnout, human factors and performance before they became a crisis, with a Stop. Think. Act. approach that got people talking, moving and reflecting long after the session ended.

Thank you to Anne James for this wonderful testimonial.

If your people are exhausted, distracted or running on autopilot, what could that already be costing your organisation in mistakes, disengagement and lost performance?

I help organisations create safer, healthier, higher-performing teams through powerful keynotes and practical workshops that actually change behaviour. Message me if you want your next event to create real impact, not just tick a box.

My accident didn't start with a bicycle crash.

It started years earlier.

Long hours.
Constant pressure.
Running on adrenaline.
Wearing exhaustion like a badge of honour.

In high-pressure workplaces, exhaustion becomes normalised.
By the time I crashed my bike, my body and brain had already been running on empty for far too long.

Chronic stress doesn’t just make you tired.

It slowly destroys:
➡️ focus
➡️ reaction time
➡️ judgement
➡️ awareness

That matters when you’re driving.
Leading.
Parenting.
Making decisions.
Keeping people safe.

We keep talking about burnout as though it’s only emotional.

It’s neurological.
Physical.
Behavioural.

And often, the warning signs are there long before the breakdown, accident or diagnosis arrives.

One of the biggest lessons I learned?

Small actions done consistently matter more than dramatic recovery plans.

🕺 A 60-second movement snack every hour.
🥗 A proper lunch break away from your desk.
🚶‍♂️‍➡️ A fake commute before and after work.
🧘‍♂️ Breathing before reacting.
☕ Moving before another coffee.

Tiny resets protect performance.

What warning signs are people in your workplace currently ignoring because “everyone is busy”?

08/06/2026

Most workplace accidents are investigated for WHAT happened.

Very few organisations stop to ask WHY the person was functioning that way in the first place.

The employee who slipped.
Lifted badly.
Made the mistake.
Forgot the procedure.
Snapped at a colleague.
Had the near miss.

Were they just careless…

Or were they exhausted?

Because stress, burnout, poor sleep and mental overload affect:
• focus
• judgement
• reaction time
• communication
• decision-making
• safety

Yet many employees are still expected to sit for 8-10 hours without proper recovery, movement, breaks or nervous system resets… and somehow continue performing at their best.

Exhausted humans do not make their best decisions.

And no amount of manual handling training fixes a nervous system permanently stuck in survival mode.

The organisations getting wellbeing right are building preventative habits into the working day BEFORE stress becomes burnout, absence, mistakes or crisis.

Movement snacks.
Micro-breaks.
Better boundaries.
Recovery.
Psychological safety.
Managers trained to spot subtle warning signs early.

Because prevention will always cost less than damage control.

How many mistakes, absences or accidents inside your organisation are actually exhaustion in disguise?

I deliver bite-sized workshops and leadership training that help organisations prevent burnout before it impacts safety, performance and people.

3pm cravings are not a lack of willpower.
They’re often a sign your brain and body are running on empty.

Most people white-knuckle the afternoon…
then wonder why they’re exhausted, irritable and standing in the kitchen inhaling everything by 8pm.

This is why I make these Chocolate Protein Oat Bars. 👇🏻
✔️ 18g protein
✔️ 7g fibre
✔️ Genuinely filling
✔️ Sweet and chocolatey
✔️ Helps stabilise energy and focus

They take minutes to make and stop that cycle of:
Coffee → crash → cravings → overeating → guilt → repeat.

What I love most is they don’t feel like “diet food”.
They actually satisfy you.

And that matters.

Because burnout prevention isn’t just about workload.
It’s also about giving your body enough fuel to cope with the demands you place on it.

Small choices made earlier change how you feel later.

What’s your biggest danger zone during the day for energy dips and unhealthy choices?

Burnout prevention is rarely dramatic.
It’s tiny actions done earlier.

Most organisations don’t have a burnout problem.
They have a burnout detection problem.

The warning signs were there:
💡 The employee skipping breaks
💡 The manager working every evening
💡 The high performer becoming withdrawn
💡 The team running on adrenaline instead of recovery

But nobody acted early enough.

According to the Mental Health UK Burnout Report 2025:
➡️ 91% of adults experienced high or extreme levels of stress in the last year
➡️ 20% of workers needed time off due to stress-related mental health challenges
➡️ 49% said their employer has no plan to prevent chronic stress and burnout
➡️ 35% do not feel comfortable talking to their manager about stress

Now apply that to a company with 1,000 employees.

If 20% need stress-related time off, that is 200 employees.

With the UK average salary around £39,000, that is roughly £150 per working day.

Just 5 days of burnout-related absence per employee would cost around:
£150,000

And that is before you calculate:
• Presenteeism
• Errors and mistakes
• Lost productivity
• Disengagement
• Staff turnover
• Recruitment costs
• Leadership time spent firefighting

Poor workplace mental health is now estimated to cost UK employers £51 billion every year, with presenteeism alone accounting for £24 billion.

This is why burnout prevention is not a wellbeing initiative.

It is a business strategy.

Because burnout rarely appears overnight.

It grows in the small things people ignore.

And prevention works exactly the same way.

Tiny actions. Earlier.
