Movement is medicine (for the soul, body and mind) 🤸♀️🏋♀️
This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and the theme is moving more for our mental health.
This theme has really struck a cord with me. Being someone who has struggled with anxiety from a very young age, I have regularly felt stuck or frozen by endless thoughts. My brain has always defaulted to an overdrive setting, but movement is now my circuit breaker. Getting out of my head and into my body, listening to what my body needs - a long walk, slow, mindful movement on the mat or playtime (handstands are always a good idea).
Movement can take so many forms and also come with great achievements and a sense of accomplishment! I feel so grateful to be able to move every day - to explore new ways of moving, have fun and connect with friends or to get outside in nature.
Yoga āsana is one way to move, but yoga can be taken off the mat into all forms of movement - moving with curiosity, openess and intention (even if that intention is just TO MOVE your body). Mindful movement can offer a sense of calm, stability or control when your mind or other things feel overwhelming. And, hey, has anyone actually ever regretted a workout or walk?
P.S. Moving outside is a bonus if you can this weekend. Breathe in some fresh air, feel alive and say a little thank you to yourself and your body.
