Georgia & Debbie from Avon and Somerset Police and South Gloc Council recently visited our running group and gave great personal safety tips as part of their ongoing work to create safer spaces for women and girls, and to raise awareness of violence against women and girls (VAWG).
The tips they shared are helpful to all, so we’re sharing these for everyone to be aware.
Before you run; download apps:
- WhatsApp / Strava to share your location
- What3Words to identify a location in the moment or after your run
- tell someone where you’re planning to run
- take a charged phone & personal alarm
- wear bright clothes so you’re easily seen.
During your run;
- if you listen to music, just wear one ear bud so you’re still aware of your surroundings
- if something doesn’t feel right change your route and seek help
- call 999 and ask for police in an emergency
- if you’re near to a metro-bus ticketing stop and have no phone/signal you can use the help button to contact a security centre who can arrange police to come to you.
Post run; if you’ve experienced something that wasn’t right you can report this by calling 101 or via Street Safe to tell neighbourhood policing where you’ve felt unsafe and why, this could be environmental reasons of overgrown bushes or poor lighting, or harassment you’ve experienced in the street. You can use What3Words to pinpoint the location.
Running in groups is another way to increase your safety, such as Justrun or at park runs.
Run safe all.
