BTR x BTR

Our first collab run with Black Trail Runners was a huge success!

We had a whopping turnout of 20 runners in Leigh Woods, and we probably did as much chatting as running. There were some really honest conversations about the barriers people face in running and on the trails. We shared experiences, asked questions and genuinely wanted to learn from each other.

A huge thank you to Malc Allen, who also leads with Cheltenham & Gloucester Trail Runners, and Alexander Thomas for arranging, and to everyone who came along. We left wanting to do lots more together, so hopefully this was the first of many.

While we work on getting the next one in the diary, there’s already another chance to get involved. The Black Trail Runners are bringing Black to the Trails® | A Carnival of Trail Running to Bristol for the first time on Sunday 11 October at Blaise Castle. There’ll be 1K, 5K and 10K distances, plus music, food and plenty happening throughout the day. It’s open to everyone, and they’re also looking for volunteers too! Get involved!

GIRLS NIGHT IS HERE 💚

We’re on a mission to get more girls on the trails! 🏃‍♀️🌿

On Wednesday 9th, Run Leaders Beth & Sophie are hosting our first ever BTR Girls Night. A super chilled, sociably paced 5K on the Downs.

New to BTR? Already run with us? Just want to meet more women to hit the trails with? Come along!

Beth and Soph actually met through BTR and are now good friends. They joined to feel safer running trails, especially in the dark, explore longer distances and get inspired by other runners.

We know turning up to a new club can be daunting when you don’t know anyone, and trail running can still feel pretty male dominated. Girls Night is a chance to come meet some friendly faces, have a run and get to know the club.

We’ll run together, keep it social and stay as a group. All abilities welcome!

📅 Wednesday 9 September
⏰ 19:00
📍 Downs Water Tower
🏃‍♀️ Relaxed 5K

Girls Night is open to all. You don’t need to be a BTR member to come along 💚

🏅 MEDAL MONDAY 🏅

Huge congratulations to Ru, who took on the GMU45 this weekend for her first ever ultra… and only went and finished 3rd female! 🥉🔥

An amazing result, and even better to hear she loved every minute of it. All those Tuesday night hills clearly paying off! 🏔️

We absolutely love seeing our members taking on new challenges and smashing them. 💚

Meet our new run leader, Sophie! 💚

We’re really excited to welcome Sophie to the BTR run leader team! Another familiar face who’s shared plenty of miles and adventures with us, and we’re so pleased she’s now stepping up to lead some of her own.

We put her through the all-important BTR quick-fire questions... 👇

HOW/WHY DID YOU FIRST GET INTO RUNNING?
I grew up sailing and used to run a lot around the hills and coast to keep fit for that, and I run now for the fun, social, freedom and adventure of a day out on the trails.

WHAT’S YOUR RUNNING ACHIEVEMENT YOU’RE MOST PROUD OF?
Running 125km coast to coast of Gran Canaria in March this year with BTR friends. Lots of big climbs and experiencing absolutely every type of weather in one day.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE BTR SESSION OR ROUTE, AND WHY?
I love going to speed on Thursdays because being with everyone makes me push myself harder, then we all go to the pub afterwards so it’s super social and great for meeting people and making friends!

My favourite BTR route has to be Waun Fach and Dragons Back in the Brecon Beacons, it’s quite varied with amazing views, and some cool runnable ridge sections.

WHAT’S ONE THING THAT’S ALWAYS IN YOUR PACK ON A LONG RUN?
Plenty of snacks and another layer.

WHAT’S ONE BIT OF RUNNING KIT YOU COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT?
Sums socks, I’ve never had a blister in them and I love a fun pattern.

WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO TRAIL SNACK?
Quaker oats porridge bars (raspberry flavour) - super yummy flapjack vibe

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AS A BTR RUN LEADER?
Being on lots of runs with everyone and hopefully encouraging more girls onto the trails (watch this space!)

WHAT CAN MEMBERS EXPECT WHEN THEY JOIN ONE OF YOUR RUNS? ⭐
A welcoming atmosphere and a good laugh, nothing too serious

WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO POST-RUN MEAL OR TREAT?
Alpro chocolate milk or something potato based (preferably both)

WHEN YOU’RE NOT RUNNING, WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING?
Anything outdoors and active, preferably in the sea or mountains

Welcome to the run leader crew, Sophie! 💚

Meet our new run leader, Beth! 💚

We’re really excited to welcome Beth to the BTR run leader team! You may have seen this familiar face on plenty of our runs and adventures, and we’re so pleased she’s stepped up to lead some of her own.

We put her through the all-important BTR quick-fire questions... 👇

HOW / WHY DID YOU FIRST GET INTO RUNNING?
I started running when I was about 8 and have done it ever since, and now I can’t imagine ever not doing it

WHAT’S YOUR RUNNING ACHIEVEMENT YOU’RE MOST PROUD OF?
Completing my first 100km race in Storm Amy last autumn and managing not being blown off the south west coast path

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE BTR SESSION OR ROUTE AND WHY?
The Weekend long run because you get a chance to chat and hang out with all your pals and be out in some beautiful places. My fave route is probably the Wye valley club run, it’s got great wooded sections, some decent climbs and amazing views (come join us on 29th August for it!)

WHAT’S THE ONE THING THATS ALWAYS IN YOUR PACK?
Salt tabs, they make getting enough salt much easier especially over longer distances, which can be a real game changer

WHAT’S ONE BIT OF RUNNING KIT YOU CANT’T LIVE WITHOUT?
My Vaga cap, great in sun or rain or just generally concealing a bad hair day

WHAT’S YOUR GO TO TRAIL SNACK?
Squares bars! (Great recommendation from Georgia!) light, yummy and don’t go funky when it’s too hot or too cold

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AS BTR RUN LEADER?
Getting to share some miles with lots more of the BTR gang, and hopefully explore some new routes

WHAT CAN MEMBERS EXPECT ON YOUR RUNS?
A friendly, chilled atmosphere, nothing too serious, with lots of chance for chatting along the way

WHATS YOUR GO TO POST RUN SNACK/MEAL?
A fried egg bagel always hits the spot. Although I usually munch through a bowl or cereal while I’m waiting on the eggs, as a starter?!

WHEN YOU ARE MOT RUNNING WHAT DO YOU LIKE GETTING UP TO?

Camping, hiking, or I dabble on a bit of baking…anything outdoors and/or involving food!

Welcome to the run leader crew, Beth! 💚

🐮 Sunday 23 Aug | 08:30 – Failand Frolic 17km
Failand Frolic is a new 17km route taking in Abbots Pool, the Gordano Round and some of the beautiful trails around Failand.  Expect around 450m of elevation, plenty of woodland, rolling hills and lots of cows!
