Who knew a tiny duck could remind me what’s important.

Being an adult is hard
Being a parent is hard
The juggle is real
The overwhelming, the stress, the endless jobs

We worry about routines.
Schedules.
Doing it “right.”

But what builds security at bedtime, at drop off, in the hard moments: this.

Small promises kept.
Again and again.

You don’t have to be perfect.
You don’t have to do everything.
Security is built in the smallest moments.
this is a story from about 4 months ago, a day a vividly remember and I am resharing it to remind you of what’s important.

Revealing the mistake I made and looking at how night 2 went compared to night 1 of removing the dummy.

Recap:
My 3 year old still uses dummies for sleep and it’s something we’ve wanted to stop for a little while but if I’m honest I’ve been avoiding it 🤦🏻‍♀️😬

Even though night 1 was emotional and it took him a little while to settle, he slept really well.

He woke briefly at 2:30am looking for a dummy and once I reminded him they weren’t there anymore he said a simple “oh” and resettled 👏

Hope other people learn from my mistake from night 1 as it definitely helped and made a big difference for night 2.

Interestingly I noticed twice today that he was about to say “mummy, I need …” usually ends with saying “my dummy” but he actually stopped himself and asked for something else both times which I found really reassuring.

He still took a little longer to settle to sleep but there were no tears and he was much happier and playful like he usually is at bedtime so I’m very happy with the progress in 24 hours!

Spending time as a family has been wonderful.
We’ve honestly had a lovely time but we are also allowed to feel ready for a bit of structure, routine and our own space.

The boys have got on so well. They have spent every single day together, they have nearly 4 years between them and they have done so well.

Have they had moments where they’ve bickered and annoyed each other? Of course! We’ve all had days where we’ve wanted a bit of space but they are still the best of friends and it’s beautiful to see 😍

We didn’t spend money on big days out, we didn’t always have an activity planned. Honestly, we just spent most of the time going on walks and letting the kids climb tree, find sticks and play with no plans.
No matter what you did over the summer, You did more than enough!

Myself and my husband had 1 week off over the 6 weeks and that was for our family holiday. A time to switch off and focus on us. The rest of the time we have worked incredibly hard to keep our businesses running, keep the kids entertained and do a few things for us.

There is a lot of pressure on the summer, it’s an impossibly hard thing to balance with work but we did it. Go and enjoy that coffee in silence … that exactly what I’m doing!

That groggy feeling after a nap 😵‍💫

Does your toddler ever wake from their nap and seem grumpy, clingy, emotional or just not quite themselves?

You might even think:
“They clearly needed more sleep!”

But not necessarily.

Sometimes this is sleep inertia, which is simply the groggy period we can experience when waking from sleep.

Their brain doesn’t instantly switch from asleep to fully awake, so they can need a little time to properly wake up and feel like themselves again.

And this is important…
A grumpy wake up doesn’t automatically mean they needed a longer nap.

They may simply need a little time to transition into the next part of their day.

So if you wake your toddler from their nap to protect bedtime and overnight sleep, don’t let their post nap mood make you question your decision. Try to do something fun and positive to help them
- “your favourite snack is waiting for you”
- “shall we head to the park?!”

Give them some time, cuddles, a drink, a snack, some daylight and a gentle transition.

Then hopefully that very unimpressed little face starts to disappear! 😂

Reducing nap times can feel a little daunting but it definitely protects overnight sleep.

Sometimes a danger nap can’t be avoided.

No need to panic!

If they fall asleep later in the afternoon (later than you want them to) then the best thing to do is keep the nap as short as possible. Wake them up as soon as you can.

Will they be slightly moody? Yes probably a little, BUT it’s the best way to avoid a crazy late bedtime.

❗️Important tip:
Focus on fun and silliness for that last stretch to bedtime after a danger nap - this keeps the mood light, helps them cheer up after the disappointment of waking them up.
PLUS it helps them build up that sleep pressure ready for bedtime again.

⭐️Watch them carefully:
The danger nap has provided them with a little pocket of rest, this means we now need to work out the most sensible bedtime.

The chances are, if the danger nap was under 10 minutes long, they should be ok with bedtime being roughly normal time, possibly 10/15 minutes later than normal based on the time of that danger nap.

If the danger nap was longer than 10 minutes then you are likely to need to push bedtime later, this is all based on the time of that nap and how tired they seem. Keeping a close eye on how they are as you get closer to bedtime to make the best decision.

If your toddler seems to struggle to make it to bedtime without a danger nap regularly then it’s possible their routine might need looking into to check it’s meeting their sleep needs.
