Most people use the terms steam room and sauna interchangeably.

But while both involve heat, your body responds to them very differently.

Steam rooms use lower temperatures and high humidity, making them great for relaxation, respiratory comfort, and skin hydration. Traditional saunas use higher temperatures and dry heat, creating a stronger cardiovascular and recovery response.

Both have benefits. The key is understanding what you’re trying to achieve.

Whether your goal is relaxation, recovery, or overall health, knowing the difference can help you get more from your time in the heat.

🧊 First 10 seconds:
Your body reacts to the cold shock and enters a heightened state of alertness. (Focus on controlling your breathing.)

🧊 10–45 seconds:
Adrenaline and dopamine levels begin to rise, helping you feel more awake, focused, and energised.

🧊 45–60 seconds:
Your breathing and heart rate start to settle as your body adapts to the cold.

🧊 1–2 minutes:
Recovery processes begin, blood flow shifts throughout the body, and many people experience a boost in mood and a rush of endorphins.

🧊 2-3 minutes: You settle into it. Clarity replaces shock.
This is where the shift happens.
