🎯 NEW CLUB SPOTLIGHT: FRENCHWOOD SOCIAL CLUB

What happens when a bowls club becomes much more than somewhere to play bowls?

Our latest Club Spotlight takes us to Frenchwood Social Club, where around 150 members are part of a club that combines bowls with a busy social side, bar, function facilities and a genuine role in the wider community.

Frenchwood hosts everything from weddings and christenings to birthdays, funerals and other functions, while the club is also looking at how it can make even more of its facilities in the future.

We also look at how Frenchwood uses its Grassroot Media screen to keep members and visitors updated with events, functions, announcements and club information, while helping showcase local businesses.

It is a great example of something we see across grassroots sport all the time:

The sport might be what brings a club together, but what happens around it can be every bit as important.

Some lovely local news from Wivenhoe.

Grassroot Media has installed the 150th digital screen in our UK grassroots sports network at Wivenhoe Bowls Club, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

The screen will help the club share news, fixtures, competitions, social events, membership information and messages from its own sponsors.

It is a brilliant meeting of two Essex milestones under one clubhouse roof.

“It has massively changed the club.”

That wasn't something I prompted Rob to say. In fact, he'd said it before we'd even properly started recording.

We've started something new at Grassroot Media: Club Spotlight.

We work with hundreds of grassroots sports clubs around the UK, but most of what we normally talk about is the advertising side.

I thought it would be much more interesting occasionally to turn the camera around and talk to the people actually running the clubs.

First up is Rob Wilkinson, Director of Cricket at Hailsham Cricket Club.

We talked about the club, the brilliant growth of their women and girls' cricket, the role sports clubs increasingly play within their communities and, of course, how Hailsham actually use the 2 Grassroot Media screens in their clubhouse.

And I learned something I didn't know beforehand.

They've sold some of their own screen airtime to 7 local sponsors, generating £1,400 for the club.

Even better, 3 of those businesses were completely new sponsors.

That's exactly what we hoped clubs would eventually do with the screens. The national advertising pays for the network, while the clubs can use their own airtime for whatever helps them most, including generating their own local advertising revenue which they keep.

Rob describes the screens as a “game changer” for Hailsham.

Thanks to him for being our first guinea pig and for being so open about what works for them.

And if there are any other clubs in our network who fancy being put under the spotlight next, give me a shout 🙂

A nice bit of recognition for something all of our host clubs are helping us build 😊

Grassroot Media has been shortlisted for the Excellence in Innovation category at the 2026 Tendring4Growth Business Awards.

The model is actually pretty simple.

We provide grassroots football, rugby, cricket and bowls clubs with digital noticeboard and sponsor screens that they can use for things like:

• club news
• fixtures and results
• events
• membership information
• fundraising
• their own sponsors
• anything else they want members and visitors to see

Alongside that club content, we run advertising from national and regional brands, which helps us fund and continue growing the network.

We have now reached 150 digital screens around the country.

But none of that happens without clubs being willing to work with us, host the screens, send us feedback, pictures and ideas, and generally help us make the whole thing work.

So although Grassroot Media is the name on the shortlist, quite a lot of clubs have played a part in getting us there.

Thank you ❤️

We’ll find out what happens at the awards evening in October 🤞

This is exactly the sort of advertising we want appearing on our club screens.

One question clubs sometimes understandably ask us is what sort of national advertising will appear alongside their own notices, fixtures, events and sponsor messages.

Here is a great example.

These are some of the latest TRUE CRIME ads running in our bowls clubs.

Rather than simply putting a generic television advert onto the screens, they have actually created advertising specifically for the people seeing it.

“Can’t agree whose bowl is shot?”

It is a small thing, but it makes the advertising feel like it belongs in the clubhouse rather than something that has simply been dropped into it.

That is important to us.

The whole idea of the Grassroot Media screen network is that the screens should be useful to the clubs hosting them.

Clubs get the majority of the airtime for their own news, fixtures, events, sponsors and messages, while carefully selected national advertising helps us fund the network.

And we want that advertising to be as relevant to the club audience as possible too.

The TRUE CRIME campaign in our bowls clubs recently won Best Outdoor Campaign 2026 at the Silver Marketing Association Awards, with the judges particularly praising the way it understood both the audience and the clubhouse environment.

A pretty good example of how advertising in a sports club should work.
