🏆 Whetstone Tournament 7th June 🏆

Another weekend and another tournament, again across county borders and into Leicestershire for the Whetstone Tournament. A very impressive setup and well run day, 20 teams at our age group with very little known about any of the other teams.

Lionesses were paired with Loughborough, Epworth, Whetstone and Saffron in Group A, a great start beating Loughborough in the opening game followed up with a battling draw against a really good Epworth side. Next up were Whetstone and Lionesses turned on the style with some super attacking play, 77KM and 23 BIQ scoring in a comfortable win. Final group game was winner takes all with 1st v 2nd against Saffron Dynamo, a tight competitive game that was settled by just 1 goal, Lionesses topped the group with 3 wins and a draw 👏⚽💙

Next up was a Quarter Final game against Hinckley RFC Stars, a mad dash from both side to get to the game on time was not the ideal preparation but Lionesses dug deep again producing another excellent display, 4ILF with a super assist for 77KM settled any early nerves, a real classy finish from 4ILF made the game safe and secured a Semi Final spot 🙌

The semi final couldn’t have been more difficult, Rugby Borough Diamonds have won everything possible over the last 12 months, and were stand out group winners, then disposed of Kettering in the Quarter finals. Lionesses set up a little different to try and contain Rugby, a tactic that worked well, some heroic defending all over took the game to the lottery of penalties. We have been on both ends of a shootout but unfortunately today was the wrong side as Rugby progressed 4-3.

A great effort from the girls and the only team on the day to not get concede against Rugby who won the final comfortably. Congratulations to them 👏 and also a big thanks to Whetstone for hosting a great tournament. We gave it our all but ultimately just fell short on the day but another great experience for the squad.

Next weekend we head over to Kewford for the SDYFL tournament 🏆⚽

🏆Tournament Winners🏆

Another sunny day and another tournament as we headed to Whitchurch.

Drawn in Group B we were against Meole, Shrewsbury, Whitchurch, Runcorn and Newport.

Meole 1st up with the Lionesses showing their intentions with a big win to start ⚽👏
A really tight game against Shrewsbury followed, 77KM being the match winner. Next up were Whitchurch and again Lionesses looked sharp, 77KM and 11LB sealing a 3rd win out of 3. 💙⚽
Onto Runcorn next, a really good end to end game with Runcorn taking the lead but Lionesses dug deep to fashion a superb equaliser 4ILF and 6IRB combining for 77KM to finish.
Last game of the groups was another tight one but 23BIQ was the match winner and the defence held firm for a 1-0 success. 🙌👏⚽💙

Top of the group, so it was on to a Semi Final against Worthen, another tight nervy game that looked like it might be going to penalties but with a few minutes left 9RS produced a stunning free kick, a goal worthy of winning any game 👌

Into the final we go....
We met Shrewsbury again, following their shoot out triumph against Eccleshall, as in the group game we knew this would be close. Lionesses flashed a couple of early efforts wide, the game was halted due to a nasty injury to 15AA who fell awkwardly while clearing, hospital tests have shown a buccle wrist fracture, we all wish you a speedy recovery AA ❤️‍🩹🙏💙
Restarting the game after a pause from this was always going to be difficult and the tempo of the game was less frantic, just 1 goal would always separate the sides, 23BIQ proved the match winner poking home a loose ball 🙌⚽

So Lionesses were Champions and deservedly so, celebrations slightly muted with looking after our injured AA who we are sure will come back stronger from this setback 💪💙

Our 1st tournament of the summer, & the first as Lye Town Lionesses, we headed to Kidderminster to play in the Harriers Football Festival 🏆

It was a mixed start for the Lionesses with a draw against Rugby Borough, a win against Droitwich & losing to the impressive Wombourne Allstars.

It was all to play for in the last 2 group games with Lionesses still having plenty to do to qualify for the knock-outs. The team weren’t quite at it & were struggling with some knocks & injuries, Kidderminster edged a scrappy game to put themselves through leaving Lionesses with a must win game against Montpellier, another tight game but one real moment of quality settled it when BM8️⃣8️⃣ & KM7️⃣7️⃣ combined, the latter with a neat finish from the edge of the box to secure a Semi Final spot 👏⚽

It was back against our friends from Kidderminster in the Semi Final, Lionesses had to be better against a really good side, some entertaining football with Lionesses on top for the majority of the game but unable to find a breakthrough due to some great saves & a few missed chances. It went to penalties, RS9️⃣ first up, & cool as a cucumber slotted it in, BM8️⃣8️⃣ then produced 2 fine saves (with a Lioness miss in between) leaving BIQ2️⃣3️⃣ the chance to secure a place in the final, & she duly delivered! 🙌⚽

So despite a few players out & a piling up injury list it was a spot in the final. It was hardly surprising to meet Wombourne again, a team littered with Birmingham, Wolves & Villa academy players were always going to be there. Unfortunately it proved a step too far for our girls as the sharpness of some of these players proved too much, with Wombourne running out winners - congratulations to them 👏🏆

A good 1st tournament under the belt for Lye, to play seven 20 min games back to back with a depleted squad was a real test & they dug in when needed to claim runners up spot 💪💙

We rest up & recover, continuing to work hard with friendlies & other tournaments to come as we continue our eventful football journey. Do you want to be a part of it? We are looking for a goalkeeper U12 or U13 for Season 26/27 playing in the SDYFL - get in touch if you are interested!

The end of an era.....💙

Our last game as Withymoor Lionesses, we wanted to end well in what was sure to be a tough game at PS Olympic.

Lionesses were triumphant at PS a month ago in the Cup so PS were out for revenge today.

A fairly even start to the game with both sides looking to gain an early advantage, a really competitive first half left it all to play for in the 2nd half with the next goal likely to be crucial.

Lionesses were able to dig deep and started the 2nd half in blistering fashion with some dynamic attacking play 👏⚽

Lionesses were able to look at a few different options late on with some mixing of positions, both teams battled to the end giving it their all bringing the curtain down on the 25/26 season 👏

A top morning's work with a professional performance - ending our season on a high 🙌💙

GOTG- 12 KBP - Another solid performance playing in a variety of positions but always coming out on top against some difficult opponents. Full of running and working hard on and off the ball 👌⚽

PPOTG- 6 IRB - Dominating the middle of pitch, in these games the midfield is often key, first to every loose ball and always picking the right option. A performance that backs up everything we stand for 👏💙

Our time as Withymoor has now come to an end and we look forward to our new challenges as Lye Town Lionesses in a new exciting chapter.
