The Hyde held the Chetwood Trophy for the winners and finalists of their club’s handicapped singles tournaments. There were 14 players from 9 clubs who played round robin stages culminating in finals on the Sunday afternoon. The eventual winner was George Calvocoressi from Oratory/Hardwick who defeated Julian Pile from Wellington in a nail biting final. T&RA CEO Nick Orr presented the winner with the trophy.

Singles and doubles for all on the teams when Morton Morrell sent a team to The Hyde. The proceedings started with a close tussle between Steven Heather and Moreton Morrell’s equally competitive Richard Cherry. The result could have gone either way, but was in the end an 8-6 win for Moreton Morrell. Nick Geere’s set against Kannan Nithi involved some enjoyable rallies, and ended 8-5 in The Hyde’s favour. Jon Lombard had to give a larger handicap to his opponent, Mark Savage (billed by Moreton Morrell as ‘the beast’ – a double play on words, given his handicap of 66.6). The final score of 8-3 to Moreton Morrell belied the closeness of the games.
Steven and Nick had a sluggish start after lunch from which unfortunately they failed to rally themselves. However, Steven and Jon exacted revenge on their singles opponents, with a convincing 8-3 win. This match saw the introduction of bisques and half bisques to the handicapping; enabling chases to be cancelled, and single service faults to be converted into double faults (which meant added stress for the server, unless they were content to serve nothing but Bobbles). Finally, Moreton Morrell managed to pull ahead to win 8-6 against Nick and Jon, despite some attacking play by the latter, resulting in a regrettable 2-4 defeat for The Hyde. However, Becky’s cheesecake did provide some consolation to the vanquished players!

Very proud of Hyde juniors Rosie and Ollie Kay who won the British Junior under 15 handicap doubles Dedanists Foundation Cup at Bristol this weekend.

The final of our Wednesday Night Pennant played last week was won by Mark Brinson and Simon Hipwell. After beating every team, they went on to beat Jon Lombard and Ros Clark in an exciting final, making this the 16th Night Pennant that Mark has won - well done both!

Congratulations to Oscar Newall who has just won the U21 Australian Championship in Melbourne! Oscar was promising junior at The Hyde and went out on a year’s programme to Australia under Chris Ronaldson’s, Wayne Davies and Colin and Penny Lumley’s mentorship. Once he got out to Ballarat, he quickly cut his handicap from 37 to 30. He has recently accepted a job as the assistant pro to Scott Blaber in Ballarat.

The Kit Mallinson tournament provided a fantastic weekend of tennis culminating in a hard hitting final which thrilled the spectators. Jon and his son Tom Pentreath came back from 4-1 down to take the match from Lucian Hand and Jack Handford 8-4

On Saturday 21st March The Hyde welcomed the Dedanists once again. After a defeat last year, it was time for redemption! Despite some close matches Hyde players swept the board 7-0 this time!
