This weekend we hosted the Cat B tournament for 10-19 handicaps! At the time of the draw, we had no entries from 10-14 handicaps, so everyone was entered into the 15-19 category with a main draw and plate winner.
In group 1, Jez, Baudouin Huynh-Lenhardt and Seth Kashdan had all won one match each, but Jez and Seth went through on a better games won divided by games lost ratio. In the other groups, unfortunately Beau Swallow, Will Todd and Jack Carter all struggled against their opponents, and were ultimately also knocked out after their two group-stage matches.
On Sunday morning, Jez and Nick Jamieson were up first in the main draw semi-final. Nick served some great railroads, making it tricky for Jez to lay any chases, and despite some great shots, he lost 1/6 2/6. Our two youngest entrants were up next, as Robert Blizzard played Archie Campbell in the second semi-final. After losing the first set, it looked like he was making a comeback and would take it to a third set, but Archie persevered, winning 6/2 6/5. In the first of the plate semi-finals, Seth seemed tired after both his matches on the Friday and Saturday went to three sets, and was up against James Ryan's knowledge of the Hyde court as James won 6/5 6/5. Next, despite struggling to cover our large dedans, Seb Sawrey-Cookson came back against Sammy Legg after being 5/1 down. He just lost the first set 5/6 and unfortunately couldn't continue his new-found momentum into the second set, losing 2/6.
In the main draw final, Nick's railroads were once again tricky. Archie (another left-hander) struggled to turn and take them on his forehand, becoming stuck at the hazard end as Nick got ball after ball back. Beating Archie 6/2 6/1, for the third year in a row, Nick won the main draw of the Cat B tournament!
In our second final, James hit Sammy's serves into the dedans again and again, and managed to serve well enough to stop Sammy from doing the same to him. He won the plate tournament after beating Sammy 6/5 6/3.
