🛟 R.I.P Peter 🩵

A sad day for the RNLI as our colleagues at Sennen post the passing of Peter Puddiphatt, Penlee crew offer our sincerest condolences to Sennnen Lifeboat Station and to his family and friends, his service of 39 years will not be forgotten.

Sennen wrote: We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former RNLI volunteer Peter Puddiphatt.
Peter joined Sennen Cove RNLI in 1975 and served for two years as shore crew. In 1977, Peter became a crew member of the Rother class all-weather lifeboat 'Diana White', a position he remained in until 1986 when he returned to his duty as shore crew.
Peter saw four classes of lifeboats serve our station and finally retired in 2014.
During his 39 years of service, Sennen Cove lifeboat station is recorded to have rescued 158 people in peril on the sea. To be part of such a record is an astonishing achievement.
Peter often spoke of how he missed carrying his pager and regularly turned up to help at lifeboat days, meeting and greeting the visitors. Lifeboating remained in his blood.
As well as his recorded service to the lifeboat station, Peter was a first-class photographer and supplied many outstanding images to the RNLI which were used world-wide in many publications and locally as postcards in the lifeboat shop to promote the work of the charity.
It’s impossible to calculate the impact that these images had in sums of money raised, but there is no doubt that these evocative photos encouraged the public to support the cause of saving lives at sea.
Peter’s lifesaving legacy carries on at Sennen Cove with his son Richard and grandchildren Harry and Izzy serving as volunteer crew on our Tamar class lifeboat. He was so proud of them all.
We send our sincere condolences to Peter’s family and friends.
Rest in peace Peter and thank you for such dedicated service.

Swimming in fog 🌫️⚠️

can be dangerous due to the limited visibility it causes. It can be difficult to see other swimmers, boats, or obstacles in the water. This can lead to collisions and accidents. Additionally, fog can cause disorientation and confusion, making it difficult to navigate and find your way back to shore. It is important to avoid swimming in foggy conditions whenever possible. If you do find yourself swimming in fog, please take extra precautions to stay safe and not to risk other people’s lives. This includes staying close to shore, never swimming alone, wearing a yellow-green tow float, wearing water proof lights and using a whistle or other signaling device to alert others of your location. Remember that safety should always be your top priority when swimming, especially in challenging conditions like fog.

Did you know your iPhone can share vital medical info in an emergency? 🚑📱

Adding your Medical ID & emergency contacts is especially important if you swim in the sea—cold water shock or sudden illness can happen fast. First responders can access this info even when your phone is locked. This could save a life.

Please be careful peeps

The Police & other agencies have become aware of reports of young people swimming out to the derelict "bunkering" Jetty off Brixham Breakwater and climbing onto the structure and tombstoning from it. They area also chucking old netting and other things into the sea. This is highly dangerous as the structure is highly unsound and people climbing on it are putting themselves in danger and those who may be called out to rescue them. Dumping items such as netting into the sea poses a risk to marine life and boat engines.

Tombstoning can have severe and life-threatening consequences. This is because:
• Water depths alter with the tide – the water may be shallower than it seems
• Submerged objects like rocks may not be visible – these can cause serious impact injuries
• The shock of cold water can make it difficult to swim
• Getting out of the water is often more difficult than people realise
• Strong currents can rapidly sweep people away

Any damage caused to property or other criminal offences during such behaviour could lead to prosecution. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents have more detailed information; https://www.rospa.com/water-safety/tombstoning. Don’t be reckless, stay safe.
