Yesterday I was trawling through the articles and photos on the BRIDGNORTH HISTORY, MEMORIES AND INTERESTING FACTS Facebook site, when I noticed the attached reprint of an photo/article which appeared in Bridgnorth Journal in 1950.
I automatically saved it to my Bridgnorth Golf Club History File, on my PC and then when I read the words I thought, 20 years ago we had a Social Committee, which consisted of 5 members at best, and their main event was the New Years Eve Dinner Dance. On the photo were 11 members with the men in DJs and the ladies in their party frocks and they had organised a dance at The Crown Hotel, where nearly 90 attended.
Then when I looked at the names of the committee members I noticed Mrs Wetton first, which linked my mind to The Wetton Gross Trophy, recently won by Harry Morris as 2026 Club Champion. Then I compared the 11 names to our list of Past Captains and found that 7 of the 11 had been past Captains and to up to now I had never seen any photos with them on, so for me this photo reveals a lot of interesting information about our clubs past history.
For anyone interested this is a list of the Past Catains on the photo :- 1939-47 Mr F R Cottrell, 1949 Mrs F R Cottrell, 1949 Mr A G Whelan, 1950 Mr W Johnson, 1950-54 Mrs C D Wetton,11951 Mr H E D Cratchley and 1952 Mr G Davies.
If anyone reading this have old photos of Bridgnorth Golf Club or past members, I would be very pleased it they emailed me copies, preferably with descriptions. ([email protected])

SHUGC County Amateur Championship.
51 of the best golfers from Shropshire and Herefordshire battled it out at Burghill Valley Golf Club, to try and be crowned SHUGC Mens County Amateur Champion.

This year was the year for Bridgnorth Golf Club, Harry Morris went on to win with a with a blistering first round 4 under par score, followed by a 73 giving him a total of 140. This gave Harry a 2 shot advantage over second place Oscar Powell from Burghill Valley Golf Club who shot a 69 – 73 = 142 with Jack Burns from The Shropshire Golf Centre third with a 72 – 72 = 144.

The day before Harry had won the 36 hole Bridgnorth Golf Club Championship, so in one weekend Harry has a double Champions crown.
After the double victory Harry said β€œWinning both the Bridgnorth Club Championship and the SHUGC County Amateur Championship over the same weekend is something I am extremely proud of and I’m absolutely delighted to have retained the Bridgnorth Club Championship, it is a fantastic golf club with brilliant members and a golf course that everyone can agree was in excellent condition. Winning the County Amateur Championship is an honour and something I have been working towards for many years. Being able to compete against the best players in our county is a challenge I love and to come away victorious is a great feeling. I would like to thank everyone involved from both Bridgnorth Golf Club and SHUGC for organising the events and the work that goes on behind the scenes to allow us to keep competing.”

Congratulations to this years winners of the Bridgnorth Club Championship!

Wetton Trophy (Scratch) - Harry Morris

Dickson Trophy (Nett) - Rob Morris

A fantastic achievement by both players and a great day of competitive golf at Bridgnorth. The course was once again in superb condition, and with the strong swirling winds it made for a tough battle for all golfers competing.

Well played to all who took part and thank you to everyone who helped make the championship another success.
