🎾 LEAGUE TENNIS IS BACK! 🎾

Our five teams have been back in action in their respective divisions of the Staffordshire Inter-club tennis league over the past month, more details on how each have got on are included in the captions of the photos below.

Well done to all who have played so far, and if you like what you see, feel free to get in touch for further info! We're always looking for new members at the club/players for our 2 Ladies & 3 Men's teams! 👍

PRE-SEASON ACTION - INCL. VERA LLOYD TROPHY 2026: 🏆

With the 2026 season on the horizon, our members have been back on the courts these past two weekends in a friendly and our opening tournaments. Here's how they've got on:

Starting with last Sunday's Vera Lloyd Trophy, Phil Everton won the Men's section of the draw, whilst one of our newest member's Helena won the Ladies side; both finishing on 16 wins each as part of a round-robin mixed-doubles format. Our former chairwoman Lillian Tipton was on hand to present the winners with the trophy on the morning, who after 48 years as a member of the club has become Brewood's first life-member! Congratulations to all three, and thanks to those who took part on the day. 👏

On the preceding Sunday, some of our ladies played a friendly away against Albrighton where they ended-up 3-1 winners! Whilst back at Brewood, we also held another pre-season mixed-doubles tournament, whereby Helena finished top again alongside Matt Thomas. Thanks to Albrighton for hosting us, and again to all who took part/to Karl for organising!

FINAL STANDINGS - LEAGUE TENNIS: 🎾

Since our last league update at the start of September, all five of our teams have finished their 2025 campaigns in the Staffordshire Inter-club Tennis League, here's how they got on:

Ladies A - Starting off with our most successful team, the Ladies A finished their season in Division 2 (South) on 30 points! Having won 6, drawn 4 and lost 4 of their 14 fixtures. These results would see the team finish fourth place out of the 8 teams in the division. Well done ladies on a strong mid-table finish! 👏

Men's A - Moving onto our Men's A team, they experienced yet another difficult year, this time in Division 2 (South), finishing in last place (8th) despite a strong finish to the season. Overall, the Men's A won just 2 of their fixtures, drew 3 and lost 9 against difficult opposition, finishing on 11 points. This result will see the Men's A relegated to Division 3 (South) next year, where they'll be looking upwards again! ⬆️

Ladies B - As for our newly formed Ladies B team, they finished their inaugural campaign at the bottom of Division 3 (South) on a respectable 10 points; deriving from 3 draws and 11 losses. Nonetheless, it's been a great year for the side, with many experiencing league tennis for the first time, and achieving better results as the season progressed! They'll no doubt be looking to revive their improving form next year, as they work towards that elusive first victory! 👉

Men's B & C - Last but by no means least, both our Men's B & C teams competed in Division 5 (South) this season, whereby they too had a difficult year with both finishing in the bottom spots. Starting with the Men's B, they finished in 7th place on 13 points, having won 2, drawn 2 and lost 10 of their fixtures, whilst the Men's C finishing in 8th place lost all 14 of their fixtures finishing on just 2 points. These results will see both teams relegated to Division 6 (South) next season, where they'll be looking to return to winning ways also!

Despite it having been a difficult season for the majority of our teams, it's been fantastic to see so many of our members getting involved in league tennis yet again this year, and giving it their all on the court! Well done to all 39 members who represented the club across our four teams; enjoy the well deserved break! 👏

Additionally, we'd also like to say a big thank you to our team captains - Kate Woodhams (Ladies A), Joe Cockayne (Men's A), Sarah Northfield (Ladies B) & Karl Spencer (Men's B & C) - for their efforts throughout the year! It wouldn't be possible without you all. 🙌

TED GOULD MEMORIAL TROPHY: 🏆

We held our annual closing tournament yesterday morning, which saw 23 of our members battle it out in a mixed doubles format for the Ted Gould memorial trophy!

At the end of proceedings, Kate Woodhams claimed top-spot amongst the ladies, whilst Carl Britton topped the men's section; with Emma Northfield also winning a prize for the best performing junior on the day. 👏

Thank you to all who participated on the day, it was great to see so many involved, and as always to our resident tournament director Karl Spencer! 🙌

🔔 RESULTS ROUND-UP - LEAGUE TENNIS: 🔔

Since our last update in early August, four of our five league teams have been playing their final few fixtures of the 2025 season, here's how they've been getting on:

Men's A - Have played three times since the last update, losing 3-1 and 4-0 at home to Halesowen & David Lloyd Great Barr Men's A respectively, before going onto win their first fixture of the season last Sunday, with a 3-1 win at home against the Albert's B team! Well done to Joe Cockayne, Mackenzie Tart, Ned Fulford & Chris Hayes for securing that elusive first victory last weekend, as well as to Phil Everton, Dean Northfield, Dom McCormack, Carl & Tom Britton for their efforts in the other two fixtures. Only one left to play now for the Men's A next Friday as they face Wolverhampton Men's B at home. 👏

Ladies A - Currently sitting fourth in Division 2 (South), our Ladies A have been the club's most successful team this season, and are due to play three back-to-back fixtures across this weekend (starting Saturday). In their last fixture on the 7th August, our ladies drew 2-2 at home to Linden Lea, thanks to two rubbers won by Kate Woodhams & Erica Claxton. A big well done to Kate, Erica, Beth Cambidge and Jen Barrett for their efforts on the day. 👏

Men's B - Have played their final three fixtures of the season since the last update, losing 3-1 away to Wolverhampton's E team on the 14th August, and 4-0 away to sides from both Cheslyn Hay & David Lloyd Great Barr more recently. This sees the Men's B finish 7th in Division 5 (South) on 13 points, having won 2, drawn 2 and lost 10 of their matches this season. Well done to Rich Franks, Gerry Hayes, Mike Shaw, Tony Marino, Brian Swift, Karl & James Spencer for representing the Men's B in those final three fixtures! 👏

Ladies B - Have gained four more points since our last post, bolstering their inaugural season total to 8 currently! These points came by way of a 3-1 loss at home to the Albert's D team on the 4th August, a 2-2 draw at home to David Lloyd Dudley's B team on the 16th August, and another 3-1 loss at home to Wollaston's B side on the 23rd August. A big well done to Val Parker, Margaret Gould, Sarah Reynolds, Sarah & Emma Northfield for their efforts across those three fixtures. The Ladies B have two fixtures left, a rearranged tie at home to Streetly, and also an away fixture against Quarry Bank; best of luck! 👍
