REMINDER- DODDINGHURST LAKE CLOSED FOR A MATCH SUNDAY 7/6/26.

Notice on the gate.

Was nice to see some new members fishing there today, with one of them getting a lovely looking chunky common carp.

For those new members wondering how to fish the lake, if you want a steady day catching everything, a pint or so of maggots is the way forward.

You only need to fish 3-5m from the bank, start on the bottom, feed maggots every couple of minutes and you should start to catch.

Work your way through the small roach and Rudd and the much better silvers and carp will come along. The fish usually come up on the water at this time of year so if you’re missing bites or struggling to get them in the bottom, take depth off until you start catching again. Then just adjust your depths according to bites/fish hooked.

You can catch some clonking silvers and hybrids shallow so do persevere.

A COUPLE OF UPDATES/ REMINDERS

Firstly, a warm welcome to new members and new followers of this page. Thank you for following, it’s a good place to keep up to date with club news.

For our new members who haven’t yet had a chance to read the rules, the most important ones to bear in mind are:

No nuts, beans or boilies are allowed on club waters in any form. This includes pop-up hook baits. Carp on our lakes can all be caught on conventional baits.

Members are responsible for any litter in and around their swim, regardless of whether or not it’s theirs. All empty wrappers, bottles, cans etc. need to be taken home with you. Any bins at the the lakes are for storage of stuff we use regularly for maintenance. If you see any litter on the fisheries, please pick it up and take it away. Keeping our lakes pristine is everyone’s responsibility.

Doddinghurst lake will be closed for a match on Sunday 7th June. No day tickets for that date.

MORES LANE ADDITIONAL LOCK FITTED

We have been informed by our neighbour, who owns the access track to the lake, that as of today he is fitting an additional lock to the wooden roadside gate.

This is the same lock as that on the metal gate further down the track so can be operated by your usual key.

MORES LANE WORK PARTY- HUGE THANKS.

Today’s work party was brilliantly attended and it was great to see people other than the committee giving up their time. There are some thanks to be given:

First and foremost to the Angling Trust whose AIF grant provided the fish refuges that were the main priority today. Thanks folks, this will make a big difference to our club and the help and support of Jake Davoile from the AT was invaluable in helping us to apply for the grant.

All of the members who turned up and gave their time. We really needed the hands today as getting the fish refuges into the lake was actually a fairly complex task.

A.G.A Group Consultancy who provided the fish refuges along with plenty of support and advice.

All of the refuges are now in and and special mention must go to Paul Barnard and Graham Marks who created the nursery area in preparation to receive our tench from the Environment Agency this winter. This area will protect the fish from predation over the winter and allow us to provide supplementary feed for the following spring and summer prior to releasing them.

Both spent most of the day in the water, which really wasn’t that warm!

In addition, some trimming and tidying up was completed. You’ll also notice that the ropes have now been removed as there is no need for them and they were ineffective anyway.

Thanks again for those who turned up to help, we regularly get asked, “Are work parties compulsory?”

The answer is, “No” however, we are a society of members, not a commercial organisation, that can only function and survive through the voluntary actions of our members. Please remember this for the next one and it will be great to see some new faces.

WORK PARTY TOMORROW 9/5/26

Quick thanks to those who came to take delivery of the fish refuges today.

Everything is ready to go and there will be loads of other general clearance a trimming work to make the most popular swims fishable for the year as the warm spring has encouraged lots of growth.

Please bring any trimming and cutting equipment you have, rakes and wheelbarrows will also be handy. If time allows, the tree in peg 17 will be tackled.

For tomorrow priorities are:

Final assembly and installation of refuges.

Clearance work

Construction of nursery area in the bay. - Paul Barnard and Bernie Hamilton will lead on this, probably one or two extra sets of hands needed.

We need a good turnout tomorrow so thanks in advance.

Despite the netting in February that didn’t turn up much, one of our member’s guest caught this lovely bag of silvers from the main lake a few days ago, so clearly they’re cleverer than the cormorants 😁😁

For those of you who offered to help with the fish refuge delivery today, I’ve just been told the delivery is at 0900, I know this is last minute but beyond our control.

If you can get there early, you’ll have a place set aside in heaven 😁😁

WORK PARTY REMINDER

A gentle reminder that we have a work party on 9/5/26 at Mores Lane to assemble and install the fish refuges that we obtained AT grant money for.

Just to reiterate the importance of this, apart from the fact that these will provide essential anti predation measures and new spawning areas, the grant money is only given to the club AFTER the project is finished.

So, the club has currently had to pay for these and we’ll get the money back on completion. This should reinforce how important your help will be. Almost £6K paid up front, which needs recouping as soon as possible.

In addition, while the refuges are the priority, the more we get, the more additional work can be done at the fishery.

There will be work within everyone’s capability, if you can bring rakes, pruners and any other general landscaping equipment etc. that will be helpful. As will a selection of spanner’s, screwdrivers, kind cable ties and the like.

Please step up and do your bit, even if it’s only an hour or so trimming and strimming.

VITAL WORK PARTY 9/5/26

Hi members

Following on from the good news about our AT grant, the fish refuges have been ordered and are due for delivery on 8/5/26 with the plan to assemble and install them as part of a work party on 9/5/26 at Mores Lane.

We have six refuges to assemble, all fairly simple, spanners, heavy duty cable ties and usual tools needed. In addition, there is a good deal of general strimmming, trimming and clearance work needed and we are looking to tackle a potentially problematic tree if feasible.

Most of the work is light in nature so will suit most members’ physical abilities

In addition, Dave and Bernie would like a couple of people to assist with offloading the fish refuges from the delivery van onto a trailer on Friday 8th as delivery is to the roadside only. Can anyone who can help for an hour on Friday please reply on this post.

We need as many people as possible for Saturday 9th so that the lakes are in good order for the season.

SOME GOOD NEWS 😁

Really pleased to inform our members that we received a letter yesterday confirming that our application for a grant for anti-predation measures from the Angling Trust has been successful.

We’ve been granted what we asked for and this money will allow us to buy floating fish refuges from a professional manufacturer as well as creating our own refuge an nursery areas in the lakes at Mores Lane.

The money is granted on the condition that the work is completed by 16th July this year so, when we arrange the work parties to complete the work, it’s absolutely essential that members step up and do the right thing by helping out. We’ll give an indication of how many people we need , there will be very little heavy work required. Most of it will be assembling the refuges and measuring up for the ones we create.

This money will allow us to protect our fish stocks from cormorants, especially during the winter and, hopefully, make it more likely that we get the tench stocking this winter from the Environment Agency

We’ll keep you updated as we go.
