END OF SEASON REVIEW

Now that the season has ended, we thought it would be worth a look back...

Having had an excellent (and unbeaten) pre-season and also having recruited a number of fresh faces into the side, Brecon began the league season very strongly. Of their first five fixtures, The Stags only failed to win their opening game (a 1-1 draw away to Presteigne St Andrews FC).

Their first defeat of the season came at the end of September, a somewhat humbling 4-2 loss to Rhayader FC Reserves.

Cup ties against higher level opposition, and games against title rivals Talgarth Town FC and Hay St Mary’s FC meant a tough October and November for The Stags, picking up two wins and a draw in their five games in that time, losing to Builth Wells FC Reserves, and to title rivals Hay St Mary’s FC.

Brecon were also knocked out of the Emrys Morgan Cup by Bishops Castle FC, narrowly losing out by one goal to nil in the 77th minute away from home, and were also knocked out of the Aspidistra Radnorshire Cup by Llandrindod Wells FC, who sit three tiers above The Stags.

But Brecon bounced back in December, winning both games that month, including a game away to St Harmon FC, which many will know is not an easy place to pick up points, and managing to score six goals in those two games.

But it was a far more mixed bag for Brecon from January to May. The weather playing a huge part in The Stags managing to get in just a single game between the 14th of December and the 14th of March!

But what a game it was, the highlight of a season without silverware came at Local rivals Talgarth, with goals from Owain Powell-Jones, two spectacular goals from Kyran Dillon, and Obo Edwards (Scoring at both ends) seeing The Stags run out deserved 4-1 winners over an unbeaten Talgarth side in the heated local derby. Talgarth were to have the last laugh however, finishing 1 point above Brecon in the league, and winning the Pip Samuel Electrical Mid Wales League Cup. A well-deserved triumph for the side just down the road.

By the time The Stags did finally get a run of fixtures, availability had suffered and this, combined with a huge lack of game time, saw us go 5 games without a win, more worryingly shipping 15 goals, and surprisingly only managing to score 3 in that period which, for a side who pride themselves on their goalscoring abilities, was a real concern.

Two games against eventual league winners Hay St Mary’s FC came in that stint, the first in the league, a humiliating 5-1 loss. The Stags did get some pride back in the following cup semi-final, narrowly losing 1-0 and undeservedly so, with Hay players and staff alike equally as surprised that they came away with the result as we were.

The Stags did end the season with pride however, winning all final 4 games, and getting back to scoring ways, putting 16 goals past opposition keepers in that time, including a 5-1 dismantling of St Harmon FC at home, an impressive 4-2 away win at an in-form Builth Wells side, a 3-1 away win at Llanidloes (With centre back turned centre forward Obo Edwards securing a second half hat trick), and then a 4-2 win at home to Llandrindod Wells FC Reserves to round off the season in style.

Individual accolades wise, this season has seen a far wider spread of goals, assists, and man of the match awards, but there are still a few individuals worth shouting out! (Please see attached graphics)

Brecon Finish in Style

Firstly, the admin apologise for the fact that this post is nearly two weeks late...

Last Saturday, Brecon played host to Llandrindod Wells FC Reserves for both clubs final game of the season.

Their opponents arrived in good spirits, and with nothing to play for, decided to play the game choosing positions out of the hat. Brecon, knowing that there would still be a slim chance of finishing in the top three, decided to go for the win to finish the season strongly.

But it was the visitors who struck first, when a deep free kick was floated to the back post, for captain Bradley Andrew’s to fire into the roof of the net after just 6 minutes.

But Brecon fired back five minutes later, when midfield powerhouse Fraser McAuley won the ball back for Brecon, playing in flying full back Morgan Preece on the right hand side, who used his pace to beat two Llandrindod defenders, before drilling the ball into the box for in form striker Billy Shepherd to hit home at the front post, for his fourth goal in just five games.

Twenty minute passed, with chances continuing for The Stags, but none being taken. That was until a piece of individual brilliance from midfield dynamo Charlie Mills opened up the Llandrindod defence. Strongly winning the ball back from his man in the centre circle, before splitting the full back and centre backs with an inch perfect through ball for his brother, Aaron Mills, to latch onto, going one on one with the keeper, before finishing through the keepers legs to put The Stags into the lead.

Just five minutes later, Brecon had their third, with Charlie Mills once again involved, delivering an inch perfect corner onto the head of classy centre back Ieuan Price to nod home inside the six yard box.

And two minutes later, it was four. Some good work from Aaron Mills on the left saw a cross cleared to the right hand side, which was intercepted once again by Morgan Preece who, feeling lazy, decided not to sprint to the byline, but instead opting to volley the ball, at the angle, from 25 yards, across goal and into the bottom corner. Another great goal from the Brecon FC back to back young player of the year recipient.

HT: Brecon 4-1 Llandrindod Res

Llandrindod reverted back to their familiar positions in the second half, and saw the introduction of two regular first team players introduced, midfielder Jack Evans, and former Brecon FC winger Nyle Slade.

And the two combined well in the 75th minute. Evans winning the ball back in midfield, before playing Slade in further up the pitch, who in turn held it up for the advancing Evans to receive it back on the edge of the box, before cutting inside and hitting an unstoppable curling effort into the top right corner.

A fairly quiet half continued at a pace you would expect given the scoreline and the stage of the season both clubs were at, and was played in good spirits, with Brecon probably edging the half in terms of chance creation, and Captain Obo Edwards being unlucky not to find the net on a few occasions from his new position. With both sides convening at The Rorkes after to discuss the season past it was an enjoyable evening for all!

This result saw The Stags continue their strong finish to the season, winning all four of their last games, scoring 16 goals along the way!

Some words from the Gaffer: “Firstly I think it’s worth mentioning that it was a far tighter affair this year, with only one vote separating the winner and runner up, and two votes separating the winner and third place. Also worth mentioning that no less than six different players were nominated by their teammates for the award this season, which is again testament to how well everyone has played this season.”

“I felt it fair to let those who were nominated know that they have been recognised by their teammates, so Charlie Mills and Fraser McAuley, know that your quality has been seen and appreciated. The other nominee was me with one vote, but I honestly just think Fraser is after the captaincy. “

“In third place, we have captain biceps himself, Obo. By his own standards he reckons he’s not had his best season, whereas I think he has been one of our most consistent players. There’s nobody I trust more to crunch an attacker, to make a perfect last ditch tackle, or to send a header into the back of the opponent’s net, so I’m glad that many of his teammates appreciated that and gave him their vote.”

“In second place, Aaron Mills. Not much I can say that hasn’t already been said. He’s had an outrageously good season so fully deserves those votes. “

“But this year’s winner has also gone back-to-back and fully deserves the award. His 13 goals and 7 assists have been so important this season, and I will spend most of the off season yet again praying that he finds a new job that allows him to play every weekend. The winner of this year’s Players Player award, is Owain Powell-Jones)

Some words from the Gaffer: “Three of the under 23 players at the club received votes for this award, one of them, however, took the vast majority of the votes, which is testament to the season he has had. I thought he improved massively last season, but he seems to have gotten even better this season, whether you put him in attack or defence, he will always deliver an all-action performance. I think he’ll have a tough time making it three years on the bounce winning this award, what with Ollie Croppier and Robin Davies having had such excellent ends to this season, but he has at least won it back-to-back. So, congratulations Morgan Preece!”
