Match Report from Team Captain Ban Senior
HBW Men's 1st team faced AFC West End this Sunday in a crucial bottom-of-the-table clash. It was a tight game from the start, but HBW had the upper hand right from the first minute. The first half was cagey, with limited chances on either side. Ben Senior had a half-chance that went wide, but HBW showed solid discipline in containing West End, limiting them to scraps. At halftime, the score remained 0-0, but we went into the break confident, knowing we were the stronger team.
However, our confidence took a hit early in the second half when West End capitalized on a ball over the top, allowing their striker to run onto it and finish in the bottom corner past Liam. Despite the setback, we regrouped, knowing we were still the better side. HBW pressed relentlessly, and our efforts paid off when a high ball came over the top of West End's defense. Their right-back’s poor clearance was seized by Ben, who acrobatically jumped to strike a shot that the keeper managed to parry. The rebound fell to Luke, who coolly controlled, shifted onto his right foot, and slotted it into the bottom corner from the edge of the box to level the score.
With renewed confidence, HBW kept the pressure on, and in the final minutes, J Raf launched a throw-in into the box. Matt Lilley managed a clever flick toward goal, and with the keeper scrambling, the ball found its way past him, giving HBW the lead we deserved. Our game management was sharp from there, with the focus clear: don’t let West End near the box. Ben even committed a tactical foul in the dying seconds, preventing his man from breaking away, and somehow avoided a yellow card. The resulting free kick went straight to Ben, who chested it down just as the final whistle blew.
HBW had done it, clinching our first win since the season opener, and the boys left the pitch triumphant.
