In Pete’s words…
During the forty years I've been teaching yoga, I've watched various ideas about the physical practice come and go — and sometimes come again. Stretching was hugely popular when I started out in the late seventies. This gradually morphed into a more biomechanical way of thinking about the body: stretching tight muscles, strengthening weak ones. Over time, though, the limits of this approach became apparent, and a shift towards functional movement began to take hold, as it grew clearer that some exercises serve daily life far better than others. More recently, a more 'somatic', feeling-based approach has spread through parts of the yoga world.
My current interest lies in how we can affect the way we feel and think through the way we work with the body.
On the first day of this workshop, I'll explore how the way we engage with the body changes the hormones released into our bloodstream, how this shifts what we feel inside, and how that in turn can change the kind of thinking or rumination we get caught up in.
On the second day, I'll look at how this affects the pain we feel in our bodies, going a little deeper into the three main ways we experience pain: through tissue damage, through chronic inflammation, and through the brain's predictive processing.
