Here's a brief account (in his own words) from club Member/club Secretary: Gavin Johnson, whose paddling has come on leaps and bounds in the last year. Well done Gav!
I decided to attend the Introduction to White Water course at Plas y Brenin in Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) in order to get a comprehensive foundation in white water on real rivers over a five day period.
The first day started with our Instructor, Ollie Sandeman, profiling myself and my fellow student Matt so he could gauge where to focus the training. We started on the lake behind the centre and then paddled down the river, practicing catching eddies on the way.
Days two and three developed skills very quickly and we paddled two sections of the Dee; on Tuesday we paddled Llangollen to Trefor Bridge. Ollie reinforced technique and gradually I started to gain some confidence. On Wednesday we spent some time around Mile End Mill then followed the canal and got in below Serpents Tail to paddle back to Mile End Mill. The constant repetition and refinement of technique started to pay off and Ollie cleverly kept me in what he called my "stretch Zone" - just outside my comfort zone but never in the panic zone.
This continued throughout Thursday and Friday when we finished the course on the Glaslyn, paddling from Lyn Dinas through Beddgelert and getting out just before the gorge. The highlight of the course was tackling the grade 3 rapids at Beddgelert.
The course more than achieved what I'd hoped for; Plas y Brenin is a fantastic setting for a course; the staff are so friendly and helpful, the food is great and the scenery is fantastic, even when it's overcast and raining. I'd thoroughly recommend it and I'll definitely be returning myself.
