Birtwistle makes successful start to title defence

Reigning DTRA UK Flat Track National Champion Gary Birtwistle opened the 2023 season in perfect fashion with a dominant victory at the Greenfield Oval in Lincolnshire. Making up for his sole 2022 defeat at the season finale around the same venue, Birtwistle returned as reigning Champion, and he looked every inch the number one with three wins out of three, each by a winning margin of at least three seconds.

Birtwistle was briefly headed by a fast-starting Rob Mear in the Final, but hit the front on Lap Two and looked in no real trouble from there, even setting his fastest lap of the race in the closing stages to take a comfortable win. Mear, meanwhile, provided much of the day’s entertainment. After finishing fourth in qualifying, a fall from the lead on the final lap of Heat 3 meant he had to progress through the knockout format the hard way, but he won the eliminator Heat 5 from the back with a daring last lap pass between George Sturgess and Kevin Kennedy, and again came through the field well in the second Semi Final to complete a remarkable recovery and earn his place on the front row of the grid for the Final.

Jack Bell, the former UK number two, went through to the Final unbeaten, and passed Mear for second on Lap Six. But Mear held on for third as Alan Birtwistle, who finished second in the Championship last year and was again second-fastest to his brother in qualifying, ran out of steam in the Final and could only manage fourth. Conrad Little rounded out the top five, underlining the consistency that took him to fifth overall last year, but his wait for a first podium continues as, after making a fast start, he was pushed back from the rostrum spots by the end of Lap One.

It was also a lively display from Thomas Hunt on his pro debut. Hunt was runner-up at Junior level in 2017 and also made the intermediate podium in the 2018 and 2019 Championships, but he proved just how far he has come since then with a combative display. The highlight was a second place finish in the Last Chance Qualifier, coming through from tenth and taking the last place on the grid for the Grand Final by snatching second from Gareth Williamson on the final turn. From the back row of the grid, Hunt finished ninth in the Final and also made it onto the intermediate podium behind George Sturgess.

Gerard Bailo made his first DTRA appearance since claiming the UK National title in 2019, but he sat out the opening Round of the Nationals to rest his shoulder ahead of his upcoming World Championship title defence. He came home second in the Hooligan Final behind Jack Bell.

The pro nationals now move on to Peterborough’s East of England Showground, which stages the MCN Festival on 13th May.

UK FLAT TRACK REPORT
RD2 Rye House (19/05/2013)

Tim Neave became the first rider to lower the colours of Aidan Collins for two years by taking the win at round two of the 2013 flattrack series at Rye House. Neave, one of the Championship favourites who finished second at King’s Lynn, was back to his best at the Hoddesdon oval to the tie lead of the Championship. Three consecutive top three finishes in the heats saw him onto the front row of the grid for the final, and once he broke clear of Collins on the exit of turn two, he never looked back.

It hadn’t been plain sailing in the heats for the eventual meeting winner: Darren Trapmore got the better of him in the first round of heats for the day, and Alan Birtwistle repeated the feat in round two. Birtwistle and Trapmore, with two wins apiece and just six dropped points between them, moved through comfortably to the day’s grand final with first selection of start positions. Birtwistle, who tailed off in King’s Lynn after a stunning start to the opening round, was once again on the pace: it seems only a matter of time before he wins his first career event. But Trapmore lost several positions in the early stages of the final and had to settle with the Deus rider of the day award for his heat round efforts.

Defending Champion Aidan Collins almost missed out himself, taking just a single race win in the heat stages before squeezing through to the third place he needed in his final outing to make the top four and the front row of the grid. But Collins, left to the inside line, made a fast enough run to the first turn to initially baulk his opponents, before Neave took to the banking around bends one and two and swept away for the victory.

The youngster’s success means he and Aidan Collins are level in pursuit of the Championship after the opening two rounds, with racing still to come at the prestigious Norfolk Arena and Tir Prince raceway in the remaining four events.
**
In the MiniBike class, Adam Shipp recovered from a second ride fall to take the win after an otherwise faultless display. But a crash for reigning junior champion Oliver Brindley stopped him from enjoying more success in the junior class, Aaron Silvester instead taking home the silverware. And Graham Unwin took the Ace Café rider of the day award after producing a series of entertaining displays in the heat stages of the rookie class, but missed out on a podium finish with Tom Wright taking the chequered flag and the lead of the championship. Vince Hurst extended his lead in the restricted class with a second consecutive victory, while the Thunderbike class is all to play for after Tim Neave stunned the field with a double victory at Rye House.

UK FLAT TRACK REPORT
RD1 King's Lynn (21st April 2013)

Reigning British Flattrack Champion Aidan Collins got the defence of his title off to the best possible start at the Norfolk Arena today (21st April 2013). Collins, celebrating his 31st birthday during the action, had the best possible cause to party at the end of 42 heats of enthralling action in King’s Lynn.

The number one plateholder started the afternoon with two comfortable wins, kicking off his 2013 campaign with a from-the-back success in the opening round of heat races before utilising his front row grid slot to maximum effect for a second consecutive win. Tim Neave was also an opening round race winner, working his way through from the back row impressively to set down a marker early in the match. Neave, who recovered from frightful injuries sustained in a track crash last year, is undoubtedly one of the favourites for the title this season, and showed that kind of form in pursuit of first round runner-up Tim Greig. Greig was back to his best in the second round, proving why King’s Lynn was his track of choice last year as he worked his way through from the middle row to take victory.

But with a poor final round heat race, Greig ruled himself out of taking a front-row grid slot, on a baking hot day that created a slick surface and made starting vital. Tom Neave stole the final front row grid slot away from him in the third round, taking a shock win over brother Tim who in turn held Aidan Collins at bay for the entire race distance. But the number one’s ten point haul was enough to give him the first gate choice for the final, and he flew from the start and onto a tightrope of rubber that saw him cruise to his first success of the year.

There were also positive displays from Deus rider of the day Alan Birtwistle, who finished runner-up to Aidan Collins in the heat stages but whose favoured outside blasts were unfavourable on the late-match track conditions. And Peter Boast recovered from three disappointing heat races to work his way through traffic in the final. But the final word was reserved for Collins on his birthday, taking the champagne and celebrating in style.

**Paul Scott was awarded the Ace Café rider of the day award for his efforts in the MiniBike class. Scott, who races regularly in the rookie class, got the better of Stephen Rhodes in a last lap dash to the finish to take a third and match-winning race victory. He also competed in the rookie class, but was beaten to the flag by Andrew Collinson. Vince Hurst was the outstanding winner of the restricted class, while Oliver Brindley, Ben Neave and George Hopper all made names for themselves as stars of the future with successes in the youth classes.

RD1 Oxford (06/05/11)

Aidan Collins continued with his winning ways from 2010 by winning round 1 of the 2011 Pozzani Grand National UK. Championship at Oxford Stadium. Collins who is riding for the second season on board an HM Plant Honda in the championship, had to be on top form for round 1 and after his heat races not all had gone his own way, as he had been beaton by Tyson Nelson and Tom Woolley so by time his Semi final race came around, he had not to make any mistakes. The race was stopped after two laps with Ade in the lead, when special guest rider Dave Aldana went down in the mid pack and was collected by Geoff Baldock who sustained a shoulder injury. In restart Ade lead the race but was being chased down by the flying Aussie Tyson Nelson who had to work hard to get past David Haith. Ade didn't succumb to the pressure from Tyson and took the win.

In the other Semi Jacopo Monti was leading from the start but being chased hard by Peter Boast and Tom Woolley, Boast went down on lap 4 ,leaving Woolley chasing Monti but Monti was riding superbly and took the win from Woolley and 3rd spot went to 15 year old Tim Neave making his first Grand Final and giving him a National Number.

The Last Chance race saw many good riders battling for the last two transfer spots to the Grand Final, and it was Boastie who worked his way to the front to take the win from Adam Marshall taking second on the X Chris Carr KTM Machine, just losing out were Tim Greig,Ben Baker and Derek Brindley.

The 2011 First Grand Final lined up, Front Row - Collins, Monti, Nelson, Woolley, second row - Neave, Pocklington, Plater Haith, third row - Armstrong, D. Trapmore, Boast, Marshall.

The race was stopped after the first lap when riders got tangled on the first bend, leaving Boastie down in the bottom of the fence. SHORTTRACKUK PRESS RELEASE
Cool Collins Wins Braintree

Aidan Collins took a fantastic win in the Grand Final of the Braintree Bonanza in what can only be called some of the toughest handle bar to handle bar racing you will ever see!

The 32 riders went through 3 heat races each with the top 18 points scores progressing the the Semis.

Semi One saw Team Suzuki rider Peter Boast on Pole, next to 3 times World Speedway Champion Jason Crump and Derek Brindley rounding out the front row. The semi was run three times, the first stoppage was for Steve Plater who took a big highside coming out on the start and finish, the second stoppage was when Darren Trapmore and Glyn Pocklington came together and when the final flag droped in the 3rd rerun, it was a win to Crumpie from Boast with Pocklington taking the last transfer spot.

Semi 2 was a real cracker as Ben Baker took the hole shot but he was hounded by Ade Collins and last years winner Eddy Kennett. Lap after lap Kennett and Collins were trying everything to get past Baker, sometimes going three abreast down the back straight but the young 18 year old Ben held on to the win from Kennett and Collins.

The 12 lap Grand Final lined up with 10 riders - Crump, Baker, Boast and Kennett on the Front row, second row Collins and Pocklington, third row Jacopo Monti, Daz Trapmore, Ben Wells and Road race star Sam Lowes. When lights went green it was Crump who hole shotted but by the time they came out of the bend Baker and Kennett had got inside of Crump and by the end of the first lap it was Baker, Kennett, Crump, Collins, Boast and Pocklington rounded the top six. On lap 3 Collins and Boast got by Crumpie on turns 1 and 2. On lap 4 Collins made a move past Kennett. As the laps wound down Collins was hounding Baker for first place, Kennett dropped back two bike lenghts and was coming under pressure from Boastie. On lap 10 Aidan Collins seized his chance and just squeezed past Baker. Ben gave it his best shot to re pass Collins but just didn't quite make it and Collins took the chequerd flag for Grand Final of the Braintree Bonanza. He was presented with the trophy by his Team Boss Neil Tuxworth of HMPlant Honda, with a great second for Ben Baker and Eddy Kennett taking last spot on the podium.

SHORTTRACKUK PRESS RELEASE
2009 British Indoor Championship

Speedway Star Edward Kennett took the top step on the podium to become the first ever winner of an indoor Shorttrack meeting at the Braintree Bonanza on 27th December. With the Arena full to capacity and the fanastic field of 28 riders all lined up on parade, it was one shorttrack's finest moments so far !

The Heat races can only be described as some of the toughest racing ever seen in the uk with many tough passing monovers being made, riders banging elbows and bouncing off the fence. Ade Collins on the BVS Honda was looking the master of the Towerland's track with three straight wins including passing works CCM rider Tom Woolley in heat 8 on the last lap. Eddy Kennett was also looking good with two wins and a 4th. Just to prove how tough the meeting was, after the heat races we saw Pete Boast, Tim Greig,Geoff Baldock and Victor Bull all eliminated!

Semi 1, Saw the race being stop after a lap when Paul Hurry had a massive high side in turn three, with the crowd giving him a big round applause when he got up and made the restart. Ade Collins made the Hole Shot with Glyn Cowboy Pocklington in second. As the laps wound down riders traded places in the mid pack but Collins was away an Glyn had Derek Brindley on his tail trying every thing to make a move on the out side. It was Collins who took the win from Pocklington and Brindley, both of whom transferd to the final, with Rusty Hodgson 4th having to take the 'last chance' route to the final.

Semi 2, Saw Eddy Kennett lead from start to finish for the win. It was the battle for second where the action was with Marco Belli on his first outing on the new Zaeta and Paul Cooper riding the FT Experience 450 CCM. Cooper Man held off Marco for 4 laps but the 3 times UK Champ made his move and took second spot from Cooper who held on to take his transfer spot to the final.

The Last Chance race was a 6 lap dash with 8 riders and only two places left for the final. It was Dynomax rider Rusty Hodgeson who took the win, with a fantastic ride from road racer Gary Johnson taking second place and just missing out on the final in third was TT superstar Steve Plater.

The Grand Final was 12 laps of mayhem! Collins was on pole, next to him Kennett and completing front row Glyn Pocklington. From the lights Kennett made a electric start with Pocklington trying to pass him on the outside. Lap 1 it was Kennett, Pocklington, Collins and Belli. On lap 3, Collins wheelied out of turn four, landed on the side of Pocklington and some how passed him and Marco Belli was coming under pressure from Paul Cooper. By lap 7 Collins looked like he was closing the gap on Kennett but by lap 10 Kennett had pulled away from him. Glyn was now getting some pressure from Marco Belli and Cooper but the England Speedway star had it all under control and took his first Shorttrack Grand final win from Collins and Pocklington. .
