A lot of engineering design is about trade offs. Sometimes it is just possible to do things differently and better. We're pleased to announce the new DXL system, please check out our YouTube channel for a full explanation, the video will premiere tomorrow morning.

A lot of engineering design is about trade-offs, and hang gliders are no exception. Sometimes though, it is possible to do things differently and better. We're really pleased to announce the Dynamic Cross Link (DXL) concept, the Puma is set to be the first glider to benefit, but more will follow. There's a full video which will Premiere on YouTube tomorrow morning (Saturday 7th, 11am UK time), please tune in for that, in the meantime here's a quick trailer.

Continuing my series of posts on the development work we've been doing so far, this one is about the frame and how it works to give good handling:

A big thank you to everyone that's sponsoring my development efforts through Patreon. We're making progress, so I'm writing up a summary of what we've achieved so far, the first section is here:

My latest video! Gets into the detail of how directional and lateral stability and how it feeds into things like high siding and Pilot Induced Oscillations (PIO). It also explains why I've been experimenting with winglets or fins recently.

I've been doing a lot of development recently, the most visible is adding winglets or a fin. So what's that about? In part it's about performance (see the Pa...

Phew, long trip back from the Cote d'Azur (and with the front left of the car making a very nasty noise by the end of it; probably a CV joint!), but back in the UK in Kent now. Should be back up to Sheffield next week as long as I can get my car fixed. A very successful trip though, flew on 8 out of 9 days (and probably could have squeezed in a top to bottom on the other day if we'd been desperate!). Some thermic conditions, not really XC, but good fun exploring the very scenic local area, and this is in mid November! Got a lot of testing in with the Puma with the new Dynamic Crosslink system, getting that fine tuned and setting up the rest of the glider around it (including the winglets and checking their stall characteristics with tufts). Was also able to give it to a couple of other pilots to try out (who confirmed the exceptional light handling WITH straight line stability). Expect more announcements on this shortly. Finally the Wildcat prototype left the ground for the first time albeit only for a few seconds on the nursery slope. So all in all, a very successful trip. Thank you hugely to Sean and his father for looking after me so well while I was there.

I've been modifying the hang glider frame to make it easier to turn (more on that in a future video), but also I want it to be easier to fly in a straight line. For that, the winglets really work. I'm not an experienced aerotow pilot, I've only every towed a few times and not since 2022 so I was pretty nervous. It turned out to be really easy with these winglets though!

Out on Mam Tor test flying with winglets. They were designed using an aerodynamic optimisation process described in the link below. They worked! (my paying members will know why I'm suddenly so keen to add yaw stability ;-) )

Our latest video is out now. If you've wondered why the dimples are on golf balls, then this covers it, or more likely given my audience, if you know full well why dimples are on golf balls but have ever wondered if you can use the same effect to reduce the drag on a glider then find out here!

It seems obvious that something smooth should slip through the air easier than something rough, but that's not always the case. The dimples on a golf ball ma...
