15 lives lost.
15 people who left home and never returned.
Since the recent heatwave began, I have seen report after report of people, many of them children and teenagers, entering open water and tragically losing their lives. As a swimming teacher, it is absolutely heartbreaking to read.
When the weather is hot, lakes, reservoirs, rivers, canals and quarries can seem like the perfect place to cool down. However, what many people don’t realise is that open water can be extremely dangerous, even for strong swimmers.
The water below the surface is often much colder than expected. Entering cold water when your body is overheated can cause cold water shock, leading to gasping, breathing difficulties, panic and loss of control.
What lies beneath the surface is often unknown. There can be sudden drops, strong currents, weeds, rocks, debris, hidden objects and entanglement hazards that you simply cannot see from the shore.
Panic can happen in seconds.
No swim, no dare, no social media video and no attempt to cool down is worth risking your life.
Please think twice before entering open water. Talk to your children, family and friends about the dangers. One conversation could save a life.
My thoughts are with every family and community affected by these tragic losses. ❤️
