Clayton 1–4 Shelf

A night to forget for Clayton

Clayton came away from this one with plenty to think about after a poor display saw them fall to a 4–1 defeat against Shelf — a result that ultimately flattered neither side, although Shelf will certainly be the happier of the two.

Shelf took the lead early on, putting Clayton on the back foot and forcing them to chase the game. It took a moment of quality from Clayton to get themselves level. A great call from Tippo spotted Keenan making the run in behind, and the ball was played into his path. Keenan still needed a bit of fortune, getting a slight bounce off the keeper that took it kindly into his stride, but nobody was asking too many questions as he finished to make it 1–1.

At that point Clayton had a chance to settle down and build some momentum. Instead, they collectively went to sleep.

Shelf capitalised almost immediately, restoring their lead after Clayton switched off defensively. It was the sort of goal that leaves you wondering whether anyone had actually been told the game was still going on.

From there, things went downhill quickly.

Clayton’s frustration began to boil over and the boys lost their heads. Rohan Thomas was shown the sin bin, and five minutes later Aaron Cox followed him into the bin. However, a mix-up in communication then saw Cox re-enter the field, seemingly believing he was free to return. The referee disagreed and, in what felt like an unnecessarily harsh decision given the circumstances, Aaron was sent off.

Not long after, Rohan Thomas also saw red following a disagreement with the referee.

At this stage, the referee could perhaps have been accused of being a little trigger happy, with the cards coming out at a rate that suggested he had somewhere else to be.

Clayton were now down to nine men, and Shelf understandably took full advantage of the extra space. They added two further goals before the final whistle, putting the result beyond any doubt and turning what had already been a difficult evening into a very long one for Clayton.

Ultimately, Clayton let themselves down. The performance lacked the composure, discipline and consistency needed to get anything from the game. The moments of quality were there — Tippo’s pass and Keenan’s equaliser showed that — but they were far too few and too often followed by lapses in concentration or unnecessary frustration.

A night where Clayton will probably be keen to forget.

On a side note, secret footage was obtained of yesterday’s referee at creamfields. Some say he’s a jobsworth, we say he’s passionate

Following last Sundays brilliant 5-3 win against Manningham Town, we are again at home this week against Shelf, who we have already played and beat in recent weeks!

We have a strong squad and are ready to go try make it 3 wins from our first 4 games. Clayton 4–1 Shelf FC💙🤍

Clayton were back under the lights on Thursday night as they welcomed a good Shelf FC outfit for what promised to be another tough test.

For once, Clayton actually started a game well! Positive from the first whistle, they moved the ball nicely and played some good football.

Although, as we all know, sometimes beautiful football is overrated and route one is the only way forward. Big Dan Wells was back between the sticks and got the ball moving with a long kick up to Joe Munton. Joe brought it down brilliantly, held off a couple of defenders, and calmly finished to give Clayton the lead.

Just before half-time, Clayton doubled their advantage. A pinpoint corner from Aaron Cox found Tom Lawler-Davies, who had somehow managed to get himself into the mixer. If there’s one thing all fans should know about Tippo, he never misses an opportunity to score. That goes for off the field as well.

2–0 at half-time.

Manager Callum Grant asked for more of the same in the second half.

Clayton switched off and allowed Shelf to pull a goal back with a good finish. However, the Clayton defence will certainly be disappointed with the way they allowed it to happen.

Clayton soon restored their two-goal cushion, with Joe Munton picking the ball up and going on a brilliant solo run before finishing nicely. A great goal from the striker, who was making his debut.

The game was finally put beyond doubt when the white Jude Belling…. Rohan Thomas, picked the ball up inside the Shelf half and unleashed a low, hard strike into the bottom corner, sealing the result for Clayton and putting the game firmly to bed.

Full-time: Clayton 4–1 Shelf United.

A really good performance from Clayton and another well-deserved three points. Plenty of positives, four goals, and only a brief lapse in concentration allowing shelf into the game.

Clayton were back underway for the 2026/27 season against a solid Bradford Unity side who performed well last season.

The game started fairly uneventfully, aside from a baffling decision from the manager, who decided to start last season’s goalkeeper upfront. The punters were left in disbelief. Some were checking the team sheet twice. Others were questioning whether the manager had simply lost a bet.

Neither side created much in the early stages, but the breakthrough eventually came when a ball over the top of the Clayton defence found the Bradford Unity winger, who calmly picked out an unmarked forward in the box to tap home and make it 1–0.

Things then went from bad to worse when a deflected effort off Ben Townsend completely wrong-footed the keeper and somehow found its way into the net. 2–0.

Clayton did have a golden opportunity to get back into it when a brilliant ball over the top from midfield found Alex Dunn. Dunn rounded the goalkeeper and, despite getting absolutely clattered in the process, decided not to go down. Credit to him for the honesty, although the referee apparently decided honesty should go unrewarded. No penalty. A strange one.

Clayton started the second half much better. A well-worked team move saw Aaron Cox deliver a dangerous ball towards the far post, where Tom Metcalfe got a touch and appeared to knock it over the line. The referee, however, decided there was no goal but instead awarded Clayton a penalty for handball.

Aaron Cox stepped up and dispatched the penalty nicely — about the only thing he did all game.

From there, Clayton were relentless. Attack after attack brought near misses, with Rohan Thomas producing a brilliant strike that rattled the bar. At the other end, Podders pulling off some excellent saves to keep Clayton in the game.

Unfortunately, Clayton couldn’t find the equaliser, but there were plenty of positives to take from the performance against a tough Bradford Unity side.

A frustrating result, but a promising start to the new season.

All eyes now turn to Thursday’s game against Shelf.
