WHAT TIMBA DANCE LOOKS LIKE?

Timba dance is often described as a Cuban style of salsa dancing, but with its own distinct flavor:

* More rhythmic freedom and improvisation than many linear salsa styles.

* Strong emphasis on body movement, especially hip, torso, and shoulder isolations.

* Frequent use of despelote, a playful solo-dancing section where partners separate and improvise.

* Dynamic partner work featuring circular movements characteristic of Cuban casino (the Cuban form of salsa).

* Interaction with sudden changes in the music, known as “gear shifts,” which timba bands often use.
