Portsmouth100 marks the centenary of Portsmouth being granted city status 🎉

Led by Portsmouth City Council, the year-long programme features a wide range of events, from civic ceremonies and cultural showcases to community-led activities, inviting residents, businesses, and organisations to celebrate the city’s heritage and look forward to the future.

As part of the celebrations, our community sports team recently delivered a series of themed group exercise classes at BH Live Active leisure centres designed to inspire participation and promote healthier lifestyles 💙

These classes placed a strong emphasis on inclusivity and accessibility, ensuring that everyone felt welcome, regardless of experience or fitness background. Many sessions were specifically tailored to support individuals taking their first steps into physical activity, as well as those looking to re-engage with their health and wellbeing.

Day 6: Environment 💙

Being means taking responsibility for our impact on the environment, and taking meaningful action to reduce it.

Over the past 12 months, we’ve taken important steps to lower our environmental footprint. From investing in energy-saving initiatives to introducing a new environmental management strategy, we’re committed to building a more sustainable future for our communities.

In the last year alone, we reduced energy consumption by over 26,000 kWh, enough to power nine homes for an entire year. We also cut gas usage by more than 276,000 kWh, equivalent to the energy needed to power 24 homes annually 🏠💡

Some of our sustainable highlights include:

☀️ Solar panel installations at BH Live Active, Littledown

🏊 Swimming pool covers and solar panel installations at Mountbatten Leisure Centre, and The Quays Swimming and Diving Complex (funded by Portsmouth City Council and Southampton City Council through the UK Government's Swimming Pool Support Fund)

✅ Achieving Green Mark Level 2 accreditation across our leisure centres and event venues in Bournemouth, Portsmouth, and Croydon

🚘 Installing fast EV chargers at BH Live Active, Sir David English to support low-emission travel

🌻 Introducing rewilding initiatives at BH Live Active, Sir David English (check out our beautiful blooms!)

🐝 Partnering with Bee Mission 500 to install rooftop hives at Bournemouth International Centre

🤝 Joining BCP Council’s Climate Partnership Forum to collaborate on local environmental action

Being is about creating spaces where everyone feels welcome, supported, and able to take part.

As part of our charitable mission to improve health and wellbeing, we’re committed to making our facilities, leisure centres, and event venues more inclusive and accessible for all.

From dedicated SEN sessions to adapted BH Live Active activities, we’re providing more opportunities for individuals and families who benefit from quieter, more supportive environments to get active and feel their best.

Across our cultural programmes and venues, we also offer relaxed and captioned performances throughout the year, alongside group concessions for schools, community groups, and more. These all help make arts and entertainment more accessible to everyone.

Day 2: Health & Wellbeing 💙

We’re proud to support healthier, happier communities every day.

Across our BH Live Active leisure centres in Dorset and Hampshire, our facilities and programmes are helping to reduce pressure on health services by supporting people from all backgrounds, including those with long-term conditions, to stay active and improve their wellbeing.

Through live entertainment and cultural experiences, we’re also boosting mental wellbeing, offering moments of escapism, connection, and shared joy through music, theatre, comedy, dance and more.

Here are just a few ways we’re making a difference:

💪 Specialist programmes supporting people living with or recovering from conditions such as Parkinson’s, COPD, cancer and menopause

🎭 Outreach funds at Bournemouth Pavilion and Fairfield Halls – providing free panto tickets for pupils receiving free school meals, funded by audience generosity

🏊 Free swimming initiatives – for under-5s at BH Live Active pools in Bournemouth and Southampton and under-12s in Portsmouth

Our health and wellbeing team at BH Live Active, Littledown is celebrating the successful launch of its Rise and Shine programme ✨

Designed to support and inspire women through every phase of menopause, the programme offers an inclusive, friendly space where women can build confidence, connect with others, and stay active.

Participants shared some fantastic feedback;

🌟 “It’s been brilliant to try all the different activities; I’d never even tried an exercise class before this programme."

🌟 “It’s a great insight into the different group exercise classes on offer in the centre, and they’ve really complimented my regular fitness routine.”

🌟 "The sessions are brilliant. I have so much more energy and feel so good after participating in the classes."

Thanks to the programme’s success, more classes are launching this month. Spaces are still available, with the six‑week course costing just £20 per person.

We're proud to have recently hosted the Institute of Health Visiting's (iHV) Evidence-based Practice 2026 conference at Bournemouth International Centre.

It was a fantastic event, bringing together hundreds of delegates from across the UK for a day of learning, collaboration and inspiration 💡

Our conferences, exhibitions, and operations teams created a vibrant and engaging atmosphere throughout the venue, with delegates participating in iHV’s comprehensive programme that highlighted the latest research, innovations and best practice in health visiting.

Events of this scale showcase Bournemouth as a destination of choice for business events while also supporting local employment, sustaining jobs across hospitality, retail, and the wider visitor economy 💙
