A fabulous end of the season day at Field of Dreams yesterday with our traditional Mark Pogmore Memorial game, to remember our much-loved and gone-but-not -forgotten left-arm over serious-grade competitor, Mark.

The format this year was a little different, offering spectators & players the fun & drama of a single-wicket competition. In the background Chairman Steve and the ladies (Karen, Clare, Angela, Sue, Zoe and maybe more) manned the barbecue, drinks & cakes, whilst Ellie kindly volunteered to score for the day! Needless to say the tension & excitement was high as each batsman did their best to top score while avoiding any 'outs' -> top stat: only man to successfully do this on the day being Matt Smith.

Andrew set the early benchmark with a solid 21 featuring a couple of boundaries, with Matt Smith able to snag the only dismissal. Martin Mills battled bravely eeking-out a flurry of singles but unfortunately was dismissed 3 times which adversely affected his final score. Young Matty Mills then clubbed it around scoring a mighty 6 to retake the early lead on 24 runs. Eliot then showed what the big guns can do with a hard-hitting 42 including five 4s and a 6. Father Phil next at bat came in all-guns-blazing to hammer a fine 33 including six 4s to move into second place.

After the break it was the turn of the battling Matt Smith who seemed determined to literally run every single run of his 33 total to move level with Phil in 2nd place. Then came the bookies' favourite Ollie who blasted an excellent (and tournament winning) 63 including five 6s. Next up young challenger Johnny Jenkins bashed a nice 41 to move to second place including a couple of 6s and a shedload of 2s. Brother Brynmor J came in swatting hard to finish on a worthy 27. Doug Sanderson managed a solid 16 but turned down so many easy singles you might think he hadn't even read the skipper's comprehensive 'how to win the tournament' email beforehand.

Finally, umpire and old-stager Hugh was sent into bat by popular demand to the tune of "Eye of the Tiger". Unfortunately the huge build-up & walk-on music wasn't particularly backed up by the performance out in the middle, and he finished on 34.

The trophy was presented by Sue Pogmore after a fine address from the Chairman to our worthy winner Ollie Short with his top-drawer innings. Players & supporters then tucked-into a fine barbecue prepared by Head Chef & Chairman assisted by his excellent helpers.

A heartfelt thank you to all our players, volunteer helpers, committee members and supporters that came together to make memories of a lovely late summer's day. Long live Boughton CC and all who sail in her!!

Huzzah!

A bright & breezy evening saw the next chapter unfold in the Boughton v King’s Arms Tuesday 100 Ball tournament down at Field of Dreams. Teams were mixed up again to concoct two sides of 12 featuring the best of what both sides had to offer.

Winning the toss Joss chose to take King’s Arms into bat and put scoreboard pressure onto Boughton. Johnny Jenkins and Hamish Straffon-Lawrence opened the batting for Kings Arms Cricket Club but Edwards quickly struck having Hamish caught nicely by Luka at point for only a single. Johnny played a few nice strokes and a mighty six before charging down the track and being bowled by Dungay for 7 (in the book) but probably 13 actually. Oughton and Edwards then advanced the score nicely before Luka struck with Edwards A caught off Luka’s excellent spell. Luka then quickly struck again bowling Reece for a single. Alex was retired after a nice 32 not out and Elspeth executed a fine stumping from the bowling of George, dismissing Jones for 3. Stuarts J and M took up the scoring with some hard hitting for 30 and 13 not out respectively in the final overs. Despite a strong fielding performance by Boughton, King’s Arms had set a competitive target of 122 from their 11 overs (“The 110 Ball”).

In reply Boughton sent forth George Harrison and Matt Smith who began watchfully. Matt was then cruelly dismissed by an excellent return catch by Tully for a duck. George pumped a couple of meaty fours before Dilan struck with his wily spin. In the middle order Chris and Pete got their heads down and battled to build a foundation for Boughton’s reply before Pete retired 30 not out and Chris was eventually bowled by Stuart M. From there it was a bit of an uphill chase to pull back the run-rate, Sam charged hard but was caught for 5 by the deadly Stuart combination. Luka showed some fine aggression with the bat in the closing overs for an excellent 10 not out. And Paul was expertly run out for 6 from the final ball of the game leaving Boughton on 99 in reply and victory going to King’s Arms.

Thanks to all attending players & supporters for a wonderful game on a lovely but blustery evening, and we look forward to the next instalment in two weeks’ time! 🏏

Great game last night with a mix-up of King's Arms and Boughton players down at the Field of Dreams. Plenty of great father/son/uncle/brother/cousin match-ups played out during the game, and luckily the rain threatened but held-off.

In a comparatively low-scoring encounter due to tight bowling and sharp fielding on both sides, King's Arms Select XI ran out victors with 85 off their 100 balls to Boughton Guest XI's 76. In order to win Boughton needed 10 off the last ball but Phil only managed a single🤣 Some top displays with bat & ball from youngsters Dilan, Luka, Tully and Harry were the highlight of the evening. And Sam managed his 30 retired waiting until the very last ball, Boycott would be proud. A couple of nice wickets for Dilan, some nice shots from Harry for his 23, some top striking by Jack, a great catch in the deep by Joss, along with a couple of wickets, a solid 20 from Ant and another big-hitting 20 not out from Eliot but not quite enough to get Boughton over the line.

Great game chaps and look forward to the next one. Thanks to Chairman for his work prepping the pitch and scoring on the day. Thanks to all friends & family who turned up to support, it's very much appreciated!

On a fine but humid day Boughton CC once again took to the field against Jesus College, Cambridge at their fabulous ground in the college. Unsurprisingly the recent weather had parched the outfield turning firm shots into certain boundaries. The square however was lush green with the wicket giving some lift and turn for the accurate bowler.

Having lost the toss Boughton were asked to bat which immediately flustered skipper Hugh Jenkins as, just like Ben Stokes, he always prefers a chase. Nevertheless, pads were donned.
Club stalwarts, but not quite veterans, Jenkins and James Webb were sent in to get Boughton a start. Facing some useful quick stuff from the wheeling Garmonsway and the ever-accurate Attrill the old boys were circumspect in shot selection. Jenkins was able to pick out a couple of boundaries whilst Webb defended resolutely. In a rush of blood for the second game in a row Jenkins then attempted a kamikaze single as the ball rolled straight into the hands of Garmonsway, who made no mistake in taking down the wickets from short range. Big-hitting Ollie Short then joined Webb at the crease and started moving the score along, including a massive six into the car park. Webb then fell to another tragic runout caused by not being able to wear his spikes as they were hurting a blister from when he got his foot trapped in a door. Webb had set off for a run but quickly changed his mind, slipped, fell a yard from the crease but could not regain his ground. Tragic. Short was then bowled for 21 attempting another big shot by the accurate medium pace of Wilson. Martin Mills next up was then similarly bowled going for his shots by Naylor. It then fell to youngsters Eliot Koopowitz and George Webb to anchor the innings at 37 for 4 which they did very effectively. Both played a combination of watchful nurdling and hitting the bad ball to move the score to 101 for 5 before Webb fell to the wily Sparks for an excellent 23. Koopowitz (71 not out) then kicked-on with the help of Dilan Kant (6 not out) in an excellent partnership of 53 to close out the declaration for Boughton at 154 for 5. Batting performance of the day went to Eliot for his excellently paced 71 not out.

Following a tremendous tea, including the most succulent sausage rolls and a chocolate brownie to die for, it was Boughton’s tun to bowl. Johnny Jenkins started with a lively spell of pace, getting some lift from the pitch but was unlucky not to take a wicket. At the other end the quiet but deadly Brynmor Jenkins bowled his first ball of the 2025 season, an utter top-spinning jaffa that clean bowled Perera through the gate – what a start! Wilson and Dixit then got their heads down very effectively for Jesus and accumulated a nice partnership before Luka Kant struck with a brilliant spell of spin bowling removing the dangerous Wilson for 25 and Illingworth for 1. James Webb bowled brilliantly and removed the useful Dixit for 15 nicely caught by Short behind the pegs. Friend batted extremely well and top-scored for Jesus with a brilliant 43 before the vicious leg spin of Webb took the off stump – what a ball! By this time Boughton were getting on top as the required run rate steadily increased from 5.30pm. The innings was polished off with wickets from the super-spin of Dilan Kant, Jenkins and Koopowitzes E. and P. Jesus College finished on 132 all out and another well-contested match came to an end with Boughton the victors this time.
The Boughton bowling and fielding had been terrific with shout-outs to Brynmor Jenkins fielding like a greyhound and taking a steepling catch, Eliot Koopowitz the same. The spin bowling of the deadly Kant Brothers bamboozled the opposition all afternoon and the Webbs were gritty and competitive with their wonderful twirlers. Johnny tried hard but had no luck, Eliot enjoyed himself, Ollie missed nothing and Phil ran the field brilliantly. Thanks to Matty for doing the double-stint umpiring in the baking heat.

Our thanks also go to Jesus College for inviting us back again to play this lovely fixture. It was fantastic to see a number of father & son combinations out on the field and mums and dads brothers & sisters supporting on the sidelines. Fantastic!

Boughton’s first game of the 2025 Season saw us hosting our old friends East Rudham CC at the Field of Dreams. On a warm blustery day Boughton took the field with a team of familiar faces and 5 Father & Son combinations on offer (if you include Chairman as scorer)!! We were also delighted to welcome a familiar face from the Boughton CC archives in Steve “Basher” Kornmuller who bagged a game of cricket with his old club whilst on a UK tour over from his home in Bangor, Maine, USA . Come back anytime Steve, it was great to see you!

Matty Mills opening the bowling struck first with a pinpoint yorker to dismiss T Brunton for 2. A strong hard-hitting partnership between Arthur Case and opener N. Brunton was eventually broken by Jenkins H picking up a sharp catch at mid off from the excellent spin bowling of George Webb. Wagg and Case advanced the scoring, hitting big, until Wagg was dismissed by G Webb for 13. Case was next to fall after an exciting 33, caught nicely on the boundary by E Koopowitz as the prevailing wind held up a sure-fire 6 on any other day. Youngsters McEuean and Sexton then batted nicely in a long partnership before Sexton retired for an excellent 50. James Webb, Phil Koopowitz and Martin Mills took the remaining wickets as East Rudham ended on a very competitive 209 runs from their 35 overs. Boughton had bowled nicely with Johnny Jenkins, George and James Webb and youngster Dilan Kant looking excellent.

Next we partook of a wonderful tea – thanks to Clare Insall, Karen Short and Dilan’s Mum for helping out with sandwiches & cakes and running the teas on the day! Boughton took to the crease with E Koopowitz and G Webb who started briskly against useful bowling by Overton and Wagg. Eliot nicked off to Paddy for a handy 12 and George holed out for 7 with a skier off a mistimed hook. Johnny Jenkins and Ollie Short set out to rebuild before Johnny unfortunately plinked a full toss straight to cover to bring his innings to a frustrating end. Ollie pushed on with some excellent controlled hitting of the old ball. Steve Kornmuller, although a bit rusty after no cricket for a number of years, was castled by a big inswinger that would have accounted for Joe Root. Skipper Jenkins then tried to knuckle down and support Short before Ollie was eventually dismissed for an excellent 50 (he’d have had to retire anyway :) ). Mills and Jenkins nurdled for a few overs before Jenkins H had an inexcusable brain-fade and just tried to amble a single before being justifiably run out for a chanceless 18 🧐. Mills pushed on with some powerful range hitting before being nicely stumped as he tried to put one into Chairman’s garden. Phil Koopowitz then executed an excellently explosive rearguard action supported by Dilan (4 not out) and James Webb before we ran out of overs – Phil, ended on an excellent 22 not out.

So honours went to East Rudham again, scoring 209 to Boughton’s 150 for 8. An excellent game full of good humour and good sportsmanship between two great Friendly Cricket sides – long may it continue!

Just to end with a ‘Friendly Reminder’ to all: If you are driving to the ground please pay attention to your speed when driving up & down Wretton Road. There is a speed limit here of 30mph, but less is even better. We have received a complaint from a resident about cricketers speeding on this road so would like to make sure we are all respectful of the limits when arriving and leaving the ground. Many thanks for your cooperation in this! 🙏

It’s taken the Editor his own sweet time to getting round to publishing this report on our special tour game, but here goes! On Saturday Aug 24th Boughton CC again welcomed metropolitan tourists The Wristy Strokers to do battle at the Field of Dreams. On a day that had threatened a deluge all week, hats were off to both teams in having the patience to wait-out the rain and get a game going – some commented on it being (possibly) the only game to take place across Norfolk on such a soggy day.

Put into bat after a dubious toss, Strokers’ Ollie Short and Edwards poured on the runs, with Ollie retiring after a lively 30 featuring two 6s and three 4s. Matty Mills accounted for Edwards for a nice 15 while Smith and Hoyles took the score on before Hoyles was accounted for by Doug Sanderson for a stylish 26. Smith fell to the accurate bowling of Ben Granville in his Boughton debut. Butler and Porter consolidated and racked up a nice partnership before Porter fell to the bowling of Johnny Jenkins for 11. Butler powered to a big-hitting total of 42 featuring several (4) towering 6s. Skipper Chaz Golding and dad, Mr Golding, launched into a mini father/son partnership that only village cricket can offer with Charlie finishing with a captain’s innings of 17 and Mr Golding for a Jack Leach-like 2. Wristies had amassed a formidable 180 in their allotted 25 overs. Some worthy performances were seen in the field from Boughton with Matt Smith playing his first game this season and looking economical for his 3 overs, Eliot as wily as ever, Johnny rapid in the dampness and Dougie and Ben spot-on with their up-the-slope seamers. “Village” cricket incidents were too many to record, but top of my list were the bat launched to square leg because “my grip came off”, Johnny’s moonshot effort ball that eventually landed at deep cover, Martin’s long-barrier kneecap splitter, and George’s painful reminder of Brian Close’s injuries sustained against the W. Indies.

Chairman then manned the barbeque, and all were treated to mighty fine burgers & sausages during the rain, washed down with some fine “Worth-The-Wait” local ale (other beers are available). Thanks also to Karen for some beautiful cakes and millionaire shortbread, all of which were duly scoffed with great gusto.

Matt Smith and Andrew Faherty led the reply for Boughton once the rain had abated. Matt was going nicely but unfortunately had to retire on 9 bringing in Ben Granville who batted excellently with Andrew to push the score along before both retired unbeaten on 31 and 35 respectively. Eliot Koopowitz batted watchfully accumulating several boundaries to carry his bat on 21, while Johnny fell for 5 leaving Matty to bat out the game for an unbeaten 13. In reply Boughton reached a worthy 162 with only 1 wicket conceded (3 retired). Although we had been behind the rate all of the game, we batted very well and with a little more luck it might have been our day. However, The Wristies were too strong for us for the second year running and retained The Mark Pogmore Memorial Trophy, presented to Charlie Golding by Sue Pogmore.

A wonderful game in challenging weather circumstances, and thanks again to all for persevering to get the game on. Please visit us again next year!!

Tue 13th August at 6pm and it was time for some more 100 Ball down at the Field of Dreams versus King’s Arms Shouldham. Following the toss, it was Joss’s turn to lead KAS into bat against a spirited Boughton bowling attack.

Josh Moreton opened-up the bowling (kindly playing for Boughton this week) and was into the wickets in his first over with young Luka Kant taking a nice catch at square leg to dismiss Mabey for no score. Jones and Stuart then got stuck into the bowling for KAS before Luka Kant removed Jones LBW for an important 29 including a couple of big sixes. His batting partner Stuart also went well and retired unbeaten for a swashbuckling 30 incorporating six boundaries! Edwards and Hoyles then took up the gauntlet and both remained unbeaten for 22 and 14 respectively at the end of the 100 balls. This set a challenging target of 112 for Boughton in their innings.

Boughton’s youngsters bowled nicely with Dilan Kant going for only 12 from his 20 balls and brother Luka picking up the wicket of the KAS opener. George Webb’s wrist spin was exceptional, and he was unlucky not to pick up a wicket in his set. Hugh Jenkins went for only 10 runs in his 20 balls and was helped by some spicy turn and lift from the Boughton wicket.

Boughton sent in Josh and Barry Ovel to open the Boughton account and they started nicely until Josh fell in Chris’s first over for 2. Barry battled onward dealing in crafty singles but was eventually bowled by Hamish Straffon-Lawrence for an excellent 20. George Webb in his usual dashing style whipped several boundaries before unfortunately being skittled by Joss for 15. Luka Kant did well against some tight bowling and amassed 5 before being caught by the keeper off Stewart’s bowling. Phil Koopowitz tried desperately to muscle some runs at the end but by this time Boughton had fallen too far behind the rate thanks to tight bowling from the KAS attack and finished on a total of 80 in reply.

So, victory again to the King’s Arms and Boughton will now need to plan a huge comeback in the final game against KAS planned for Sept 15th. Nice game to be part of and well played all!!!!

On 28th July we were invited by Boughton CC old boy James Barrett to travel over to Sutton to play a new fixture for us at their lovely ground just outside Ely. Both teams sported a nice mix of vets and youngsters which made for an entertaining encounter on a lovely warm day for cricket.

After losing the toss Boughton chose to take the field while Ward and Pollard made a steady start for Sutton before Eliot Koopowitz struck in the 6th over with his flighted spin to remove Pollard bowled for 6. Two overs later Koopowitz struck again with a smart stumping of Garner by Faherty for 2. At 41 for 2 Sutton were held in check by a tight spell from opener Gareth Kent returning for a game for Boughton whilst visiting his family. Kent was eventually rewarded after some lovely line & length with the wicket of opener Ward well caught by Faherty after nicking-off for a solid 18. Youngster Dilan Kant, on debut for Boughton CC, took an impressive 3 wickets with his accurate spin bowling during his 3 over spell for the cost of only 14 runs – well done Dilan! Dilan’s younger brother Luka – also an excellent spinning prospect – backed up his brother bowling a nice spell against several seniors and was very unlucky not to take a wicket. Nice one Luka! Another Sutton youngster Will Scarrow kindly agreed to play for Boughton and set up a fascinating encounter bowling to his Dad towards the end of the game, and he was unlucky not to claim his scalp. Great stuff Will! Old hands Hamish Straffon-Lawrence, Brynmor and Hugh Jenkins accounted for the final three Sutton wickets, after some spirited hitting from Vineeth Radhakrishnan (23) in particular, with Sutton finishing on an excellent 148 all out.

Boughton set a target to win of 147 off their 35 overs opened with the ever-willing Hamish and Gareth. Unfortunately, Gareth got a nasty one from Emms in the opening over trapped LBW for no score. In the fourth over Hamish was also LBW to Mappledorum for 2 and Boughton were in a bit of trouble at 18 for 2. Phil Koopowitz stepped up game for a go nearer the top of the order this week and had a short but powerful innings hitting 3 l***y 4s before being bowled by opener Emms. Eliot Koopowitz then tried to dig-in with some help from Dilan and Will before being bowled by Josh Grady for a battling 9. Andrew fell cheaply caught off the bowling of Pollard and by this time Boughton had fallen well behind the required rate and had lost 8 wickets. Luka Kant played a nice innings to try and rescue things, helped by Hugh Jenkins (8 ), Steve Short (2) and Brynmor Jenkins (4). However, Boughton’s last wicket fell for 65 with Luka carrying his bat not out on 2.
So a splendid game – thank you for inviting us Mr Barrett! – but Sutton a bit too strong for us on the day. It was great to see a number of youngsters contributing on both sides, and many thanks to Dilan, Luka and Will for playing for Boughton this time. Thanks to also to our veterans who did well with the bowling and fielding and tried hard with the bat. Great game played in excellent spirit, we look forward to returning the compliment next year!

On Sunday Boughton CC set out for our annual fixture against Jesus College Cambridge, Long Vacation XI at their lovely ground in the College. All week the weather had threatened to defeat us, however after a cloudburst before lunchtime the rain stayed off the entire day, which was a blessing this summer.

Having won the toss Boughton elected to have a bat, fielding a strong side of four father & son combinations along with club stalwarts including Ash Legge visiting us from his home in Australia. Ash in fact opened the innings with George Webb. However, George fell cheaply in the first over miscueing a full toss back to the bowler for an unfortunate duck. George admitted he had spent all weekend partying in London but strongly maintained this had no effect whatsoever on his batting. Ollie Short joined Ash and together they formed a partnership of controlled aggression for 45 runs before Ash fell LBW to Wilson for 18 runs, having played a characteristically stylish innings. Incoming batsman James Bridges and Ollie preceded to work the bowling through the “V” to take the score to 55 before Ollie fell caught off the bowling of Grimes for a dynamic 30 runs.

Eliot Koopowitz was next up and together with Bridges they cemented a firm foundation for Boughton, taking the score to 141 before Eliot fell caught off the bowling of Warnes for an excellent 20 runs. James and Eliot’s partnership consisted of 86 runs in 84 balls and put Boughton in a very strong position. James Bridges was then retired after a commanding 63 not out, consisting of 5 big sixes and the same number of 4s. Next up James Webb stroked the ball around until he fell caught for 8 runs. The big hitters kept coming as Johnny Jenkins then joined the fray, immediately finding boundaries until he too fell caught for a rapid 25 runs. Phil Koopowitz and Matt Mills continued adding another 15 runs, including a huge 6 by Phil. The Boughton innings was declared with Martin Mills and Phil unbeaten for a very competitive total of 195 for 7 from 35 overs.

Following a delightful tea - just one of the highlights of playing at this fabulous venue - it was Boughton’s turn to take the field. With the thunder rumbling and clouds threatening us most of the afternoon, we still managed to get though the entire innings without stoppage, which was remarkable given the forecast. Opening the bowling Matt Mills with accurate seamers and George Webb ripping leg spinners proved a difficult combination to get away. Only 12 runs had been scored before the wicket of Kinsler O’Sullivan fell for 4 in the 5th over from the bowling of Mills, caught Legge. This was followed by Webb in the next over dismissing the other opener Willis LBW, also for 4. Webb then picked up Barrow, bowling him with a peach of a leg spinner then two balls later bowled Turner for a duck, leaving Jesus College under pressure at 17 for 4 at the end of the 12th over. Jesus then consolidated through the watchful batting of Sybil Stacpoole and Warnes to take the score to 63 before Warnes fell in the 20th over after a nice innings of 40, caught and bowled by father & son combination Koopowitz, with Eliot taking a well-judged catch in the deep. Sybil was next to fall, caught by Eliot at Square leg from a sharp pull, after a battling stand at the crease of an hour against some tight bowling. Martin Mills then took his second wicket of the day trapping Blanchard Lewis LBW for 6. James Webb took his turn bowling serving up miserly off spin and seam variation, and bowling Wilson for 12 as he was starting to look dangerous. Hugh Jenkins took over after Webby’s spell and dismissed the prolific Hyde for 37 with a leg side strangle superbly pouched by the swallow-diving Ollie Short behind the wicket. With Hyde the set batsman, much of Jesus’s hope departed with him at 133 for 9 after an exciting chase. The final wicket fell after a wonderful piece of fielding by George Webb diving at mid-wicket to ping the ball in for Ollie to run out Grimes understandably stranded. This left MacGregor unbeaten on 20 and Jesus ended on 146 all out in a spirited chase, with honours going to Boughton CC this year.

An excellent game at a wonderful facility and played in the best of spirit. Jesus battled gamely to take the game deep in their reply, and Boughton CC fielded like demons, bowled brilliantly and batted with great power. There are too many fine performances to mention – Bridges’ 63 not out, Ollie, Eliot, Ash & Johnny’s support with the bat, Martin’s first 2-fer, Ollie’s wonder catch, Matty’s 6 overs for 6 runs, George’s 6 for 9 runs – but I mentioned most of them. Check out the data in the attached scoresheets beautifully curated by the wonderful Tim Steele at Jesus. Many thanks to Sybil and the team for inviting us & hosting us so brilliantly – we thoroughly enjoyed the day!

25/06/2024

Boughton CC kicked off the 2024 season on Sunday with a trip up to see our old foes at East Rudham. Sunday was a scorcher and the ground at Rudham looked glorious – both sides had a bit of a struggle with teams in this holiday season, but 9-a-side still proved an enjoyable & friendly contest. Winning the toss, Boughton chose to put their rusty bodies to the test in the field. Shelly fell cheaply caught by H. Jenkins at slip off the wrist spin of Faherty in his first over. This brought a pair of formidable young left-handers in Tillcock and Wagg together at the crease. They proceeded to accumulate with a series of nice boundaries moving quickly to 72 after 10 overs with no further loss of wickets. Matt Mills and Faherty’s opening spells were disciplined and bode well for the rest of the season. Change of bowling brought Jenkins H and J into the attack with a maiden by J. Jenkins setting up H. Jenkins to remove the set opener Tillcock, after reaching a fine fifty, with a smart catch behind the stumps from Ash Legge. This was followed immediately with a carbon copy wicket - caught Legge bowled H. Jenkins – to set up a hat trick in the next over. But the Skipper took himself off in an early bid for the season's "Team Player" Award. J. Jenkins was unlucky in his spell with some excellent quick and bouncy bowling with great away-shape from the numerous left-handers, but with no reward. In the meantime Wagg batted brilliantly with the rest of the order to move the game along reaching 105 for 3 after 20 overs. In the final 10 overs H. Jenkins accounted for Howard after a nice partnership, bowled for 7 runs and then had A. Case caught brilliantly by O. Short with a diving, tumbling, catch that threatened his sore finger that he had lopped off while cooking earlier in the week. B. Jenkins, O. Short and S. Short completed the bulk of the remaining 10 overs with spin options in the face of an accelerating Wagg who carried his bat for a fine 85, featuring controlled hitting and watchful partnerships. Overson then struck the final ball of the innings for a huge four meaning Boughton CC had been set 166 to win off their 30 overs. On a hot day with only 9 men, and the first game of the season Boughton fielded exceptionally well with Martin Mills, Matty M, Brynmor and Andrew all doing a great job, and Ash playing well behind the stumps.

After a luvly cuppa tea, sandwiches & cakes it was Boughton CC’s turn to bat. Andrew Faherty and Matt Mills opened carefully, feeling their way into a new season. Matt was first to fall for 4, bowled by Wagg after a controlled start. This brought O. Short to the crease in the 4th over with 9 on the board. After a crunching boundary Ollie was then trapped on the slog-sweep by Overson adjudged LBW for 4. Boughton CC alumnus Ash Legge then stepped up returning to play for his old club after moving to Perth (Oz not Scotland) a few years ago. Inevitable rustiness from lack of cricket unfortunately caught up with him, despite a great performance with the gloves, nurdling a catch to Case off Overson for no score. This put Boughton well under the cosh and Rudham’s tails were up. J. Jenkins and B. Jenkins then departed before they could adapt to the bowling, with the old wizard Overson as our nemesis taking 4 for only 8 runs off his 6 overs. This brought skipper H. Jenkins and Chairman S. Short together to try and salvage something from the game at 37 for 6 at the halfway point. Jenkins and Short got their heads down and into line against some useful bowling from Howard, Tillcock, Brumpton, Gravy & Powels. Surviving several run out scares, Chairman & The Skipper eeked-out a very worthy partnership of 42 before Short finally fell, caught Tillcock bowled Howard. Martin Mills then batted nicely for the remaining 3 overs, carrying his bat for 0 with Jenkins finishing on 37 not out. Despite the chase proving too much for Boughton, it was great to see some game batting from the Chairman and Martin at the tail to retrieve a modicum of respectability at 87 for 7 in reply.

An excellent win by Rudham in a game with great spirit and lots of laughs on a beautiful day. Thanks to Rudham and we look forward to seeing them again next year. Thanks to all the BCC players and forward for a win in the next one!!
