We have had some new arrivals at Binty's Farm HQ, and we were in two minds about introducing them but we think it's important for people to see.
Picture 1 is one of our chooks; she's been here for a couple of years and is a very chilled and contented girl.
The remaining pictures are our new girls who have come as rescue hens. These have been barn reared in a commercial egg facility and Fresh Start for Hens didn't think they'd seen grass or the outside.
We know times are tough, budgets are tight and pricing is important. But if possible, please try not to buy barn eggs. They're better than enriched caged, but still not working in the hens' best interest.
These girls will be okay. In a few months their feathers will have grown back, their combs will be nice and dark and they'll have learnt how to chicken. But there are thousands who won't ever get a chance to be a proper hen.
Let us know if you'd like to see more of the rescue girls and their progress.
