🍂⛵ Autumn on the water at Bolton Sailing Club ⛵🍂

There’s something special about sailing into autumn.

The changing weather brings new challenges, the colours around the water begin to change, and there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy some great days on the water with friends and fellow sailors.

As we head into the new season, we’re looking forward to:

⛵ Getting out on the water whenever conditions allow
🌬️ Enjoying the challenge of autumn winds
🧭 Building confidence and developing sailing skills
🤝 Sharing time on the water with our sailing community
☕ Enjoying the social side of the club, on and off the water

For those who sail regularly, autumn is a great chance to make the most of your time on the water. And for those who perhaps haven't been sailing for a while, it’s a perfect time to get involved again.

At Bolton Sailing Club, it’s not just about the sailing — it’s the people, the experiences and the sense of being part of something that makes every season enjoyable.

So, as summer draws to a close, we’re looking forward to crisp mornings, fresh winds and plenty more time on the water.

More Than a Place to Sail

Sailing club membership can offer much more than access to the water.

Practical facilities and services can make boat ownership easier and more enjoyable, while providing a convenient base from which to make the most of your time afloat. Whether it’s the clubhouse, boat storage, launching, berthing or other facilities, membership can bring together the things that make sailing more straightforward.

There is also the benefit of experience. Fellow members can offer valuable local knowledge, practical advice and years of experience — whether you are maintaining a boat, planning a passage or simply looking to get more from your time on the water.

And sailing need not be an individual pursuit.

A lifelong interest, shared across generations.

Sailing offers families the opportunity to spend time together away from the usual routines. Younger sailors can develop practical skills, confidence and independence, while parents and grandparents can share their enthusiasm and experience.

Whether racing, cruising, learning or simply enjoying a day afloat, sailing provides opportunities for families to enjoy the water together and create experiences that stay with them.

Membership is about making the most of sailing — with the facilities, opportunities and support to enjoy it for years to come.

New to sailing?

You don’t need any sailing experience to become a member of our club.

Sailing is a great way to stay active, learn new skills and spend time outdoors. It provides a gentle but effective form of exercise, while also giving you something practical and interesting to learn.

There is another side to sailing too. Learning how to handle a boat, understand the wind and make decisions on the water can build confidence and keep you thinking. And because you’re learning alongside other people, it’s a natural way to meet others, make new friendships and enjoy being part of a club.

For many people, joining a sailing club is about more than taking up a new sport. It’s about finding a new interest, getting out on the water and spending time with good people.

You don’t need to know where to start. You just need to be willing to try.

There's more to Sailability than sailing, the social side is just as important. It helps people grow in confidence and feel part of a supportive community.

On Friday Sailability celebrated our fabulous community with a sizzling summer BBQ. Sailors, volunteers, families and carers came together to enjoy delicious food under as much shade as we could find.

A joyous afternoon that showed the friendships, support and sense of belonging that make Sailability so special.

On the 24th June we were proud to host our first Hansa TT Event, especially following last year's cancellation due to low water levels. 15 boats took to the water with sailors representing 5 different sailing clubs. It was a terrific day of racing and a brilliant display of Hansa sailing, showing just what inclusive sailing can achieve. It was all made not just possible, but memorable by the many volunteers who worked tirelessly in the sweltering heat.

A brilliant day out on the water for our Sailability fleet yesterday. Even a few stormy clouds couldn't dampen the spirits of our sailors! Huge thanks to all the incredible volunteers whose hard work and support make days like this possible.

On Tuesday our Sailability fleet had another very successful race training day with the RYA's Alan Jones.

A day of strong gusts meant time for learning theory during postponements and tricky sailing conditions. There was great racing and lots of fun. By the end of the day a big improvement was seen with all sailors getting to the start line on time.

A massive thank you to all the volunteers who made the day possible. Without you events like these couldn't take place.

We've got exciting news to share! Our Sailability team has received vital grant funding from The Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund. This has enabled us to purchase another Hansa 303 accessible boat for our fleet.

Mrs D Hawkins JP LLB, His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester visited today for the formal handover.

Adding this new boat means even more disabled people will have the opportunity to experience the magic of sailing.

For many, sailing is a rare place where disability doesn't determine ability. It's a place where you can learn new skills, feel the wind on your face and enjoy the freedom of being out on the water.

This boat will create opportunities that empower and build confidence both out on the water and in everyday life.

A huge thank you to The Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund for making this purchase possible. Your support will help us to continue breaking down barriers and ensure that sailing is a place where everyone belongs.

Ready to learn to sail? ⛵

At Bolton Sailing Club, our upcoming RYA Dinghy Level 1 & 2 course is the perfect introduction to sailing and building confidence on the water.

As a recognised training centre of the Royal Yachting Association, we’ll guide you through the skills needed to get afloat safely and independently.

🏁 RYA Dinghy Level 1 – Start Sailing
Learn how to sail in all directions, with an introduction to launching and recovering.

🌊 RYA Dinghy Level 2 – Basic Skills
Build on your knowledge with rigging, launching, sailing in all directions, capsize recovery and essential safety skills.

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to make good decisions afloat and sail a dinghy confidently in suitable conditions.
