Westhoughton Lions Westhoughton Lions are a community focused rugby league club that caters for everyone. We offer free sessions for ages 3 to 6.

🦁💛🖤 JUNIOR WEEKEND ROUND-UP 🖤💛🦁

Another brilliant weekend for our junior Lions, with festivals, tries, tackles and plenty of proud parents lining the touchlines soaking up the sunshine.

A special Father’s Day thank you goes out to all the dads, grandads, stepdads and father figures who spend their weekends driving up and down the motorway, standing on the sidelines, washing kit, helping with fundraising, coaching, carrying bags and occasionally rescuing us when we’ve forgotten an important bit of kit! 😅

Quite simply, junior rugby doesn’t happen without you. Thank you for everything you do for our young players. 👏

Congratulations to all of our players, coaches and volunteers on another fantastic weekend representing the club. Special shout out to our competitive junior teams who managed to complete a clean sweep of wins today to back up the open age teams win yesterday! 💪

🦁 Junior Weekend Fixtures 🦁

We think this might be a club record… 👀

This Sunday we have EIGHT junior teams playing at home including TWO home festivals being hosted by our Under 9s teams. Safe to say The Den is going to be a busy place! 🚗😂

If you’re planning on coming down, please allow a little extra time for parking. Better yet, car share where possible and save yourself doing three laps of the estate looking for a space while convincing the kids you definitely knew it would be this busy.

With so much rugby taking place, we’d also like to remind everyone that the club is run entirely by volunteers, from the coaches, team mangers, first aiders, events, social media, committee, building maintenance and even JP not mowing the pitches because it’s either too wet or too dry. From setting pitches up and marking fields, to opening up, organising festivals, and making sure everyone is where they should be and that game days run smoothly, it’s all done by people giving up their own time for the benefit of the players. 👏

So if you’ve got a spare five minutes during the day, please have a look around and see if there’s anything you can help with. Even simple jobs like helping keep the site tidy or emptying one of the wheelie bins around the grounds makes a huge difference when we’re hosting this many teams.

Good luck to all of our teams this weekend, whether you’re playing at home or flying the Lions flag away from The Den. Let’s make it another great day for junior rugby.

And finally, a reminder that all lost water bottles become property of the club after 14 days… we think that’s how the law works anyway. 🤷‍♂️😂

🎓🏉 FROM PRIMARY SCHOOL TO FINISHING SCHOOL… 🏉🎓

Today marks a big milestone for most of our Under 16s players, who sat their final GCSE exam and officially finished school (apart from the couple still suffering through Spanish on Wednesday… ¡buena suerte! 🇪🇸😬).

Over the last few months these players have somehow managed to balance revision, coursework, exams, training sessions and match days. That’s no easy task, and every single one of them should be incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved.

As a club, we’re certainly proud of them. We’ve watched many of these players grow from young children taking their first steps in rugby league to becoming outstanding young men who represent Westhoughton Lions with pride, commitment and resilience every week.

Of course, we couldn’t let this moment pass without a little trip down memory lane…

The photos below are from their very first day at primary school. Fast forward nearly 12 years and they’re now finishing secondary school, preparing for college, apprenticeships, sixth form and whatever comes next.

The challenge is simple…
