I'm very privileged to be one of only 8 handlers on this course which I'm loving so much.
It's proving challenging with a dog like Finn who as an excitable Mantrailing Labrador has had to learn to use his brain and skills in a very different way.
Stripping it back to basics and teaching him to focus on using scent in a different way has not been easy and sometimes still he goes into Mantrailing mode when the adrenaline gets too high but he's slowly learning to become more focused and steady.
For me it's learning a different way of handling and working in environments I naturally tend to avoid anyway in life let alone in Mantrailing. Working in a very busy urban Retail Park on a Sunday morning was very out of my comfort zone especially with a dog who has a history of being strong and excitable and liable to jump up to every random passer by when his bloods up!!
The work that we have been doing over the past couple of months really became evident though when he actually ignored everyone and did a great job of focusing on the tracks. He's slowly realising that there's not necessarily a person at the end with food and that the articles we leave along the way are a reward in themselves creating a benefit in his mind of concentrating on following the scent to find them rather than getting to the end as fast as possible!!
As a group the 8 of us have all gelled really well....all from different backgrounds and experience and with very different types of dogs but to watch each team progressing and then for us all to discuss our thoughts and ideas is so nice....we are all on different journeys which on this course works so well and even when we are back home from each of our monthly meet ups we have constant help and feedback from Kathryn, Dee and Ilkka as well as the thoughts and encouragement of the other handlers on the course.
This weekend we were given details of what the assessments next May would be.......it's extremely challenging and at the moment seems a long long way away from where we are now!!! There's an awful lot of learning and training to be done over the next few months which I'm super excited about!!
If any of my local followers are keen to help out by coming and laying tracks for me then please get in touch...I need as many different people as I can find. 😁😁
There will be cake and money off Mantrailing sessions too.....the best thing is you don't have to hang around and wait for the dog to find you....you can lay a track then go!! No hiding in bushes in the cold pouring rain for ages getting brambles up your backside!! 🤣🤣🤣

Great session this afternoon at Davidstow Woods...a venue that offers many different challenges for the teams. Its a super busy place for dog walking so there's always other dogs about and loads of contamination. There's always varying wind conditions and changes of surface and environment from open areas to woodland.
All the teams worked so well...Izzy showed great focus and good decision making. 💪😎
Young Zeth who has only done a couple of sessions but he was superb....he knew exactly what he needed to do and showed he really understood the game! ⭐😁
Reggie was his usual busy but accurate self brilliantly handled by his Mum today as his Dad was at work. 😍👏
Taran was also on great form...sometimes getting a bit caught up in blown scent but once he realised the heart of the trail was easier to follow he found his trail layer with no problem. 😍😁
Best of all we stayed dry....well apart from Sue's feet as her boots have got holes in!! 🤣🤣🤣

Lovely afternoon session yesterday with young Lottie having her first ever session at just a few months old. She was a little unsure at first but soon got the hang of it. 🥰😁
Buddy trailed in great style though he did get slightly distracted by a visible decoy on his second trail before working out his mistake and getting back on the trail .. his son Banjo didn't fall for that distraction when given the same exercise ..he was totally focused on the trail and gave the decoy no more than a fleeting glimpse. 💪😎
Then we had Lola who has trailed before but this time handled by Sophie who hadn't done it before. Sophie was a complete natural....great line handling and instinctively reacting to the dogs body language at junctions etc in a way that takes some people a long time to learn. 👏👍
Weather was perfect and we had a very enjoyable couple of hours.
I somehow managed to not get any pics of Banjo though!! 🤷☹️

What perfect weather we had today for our session at the wonderfully named Horneyditch Corner!! 🤣🤣
We had sunshine 🌞🌞 and blue skies and all the teams worked well.
Lovely to see Claire and her 2 dogs Otta and Rye who are on holiday from Kent...this is the third time Claire has been out with us and she's definitely become one of the group now. 😁😁
Also lovely to have regulars Izzy and Reggie and then the gorgeous 16 week old Zeth who was having his second session and absolutely smashed it with a super natural way of working.
Brilliant afternoon as always. 🥰🥰

WOW....what a fantastic evening at Colliford Lake tonight. We did some short warmup trails and then we laid trails which had the trail layers walking in the waters edge for most of the trail.
It was fascinating watching how the dogs worked the problem and all 4 of them showed a different way of adapting their normal trailing behaviours but they all did brilliantly and found their trail layers. 💪😎👏
Pics aren't the best as I was so busy watching the dogs. 🤣🤣
I'll definitely be doing more of these sessions here so there'll be opportunities for those that missed out tonight. 😁

Just had the most brilliant session this afternoon up above Millpool....it was super windy and there were loads of sheep, ponies etc everywhere testing the dogs focus and resilience and they were all awesome!! 😁
Izzy worked her socks off and showed some super clear behaviours when she got funnelled down through some thick ferns and then into an open area where there was no trail...it was really helpful to be able to take note of the change there for future reference. Once we returned to where she'd lost it she really concentrated and made light work of the trail.💪😎
Next up was Otta....visiting from Kent. His mum has trailed with me before when she was here on holiday and in Kent used to trail with Douglas Daniel who I posted about a few days ago had sadly lost his life after being in an RTA with a drunk driver. 😥😥
Last time she trailed one of her other dogs Rye but today was the old boy Otta's turn and he totally belied his 14 years to work 2 trails with precision and enthusiasm. It was lovely watching him work and he literally 'tells' his Mum when he loses the trail by barking at her!! 🥰😁
Reggie was foot perfect on his 2 trails....the second one having some testing elements with wide open areas on top of the hill where the wind was strongest....and having a group of sheep literally on the trail but he stayed focused on his job and completely ignored them to easily find his trail layer! 👏🌟

Beyond devastated to hear of the death of my friend and fellow Mantrailing Instructor Douglas Daniel. 😥
Doug started his Mantrailing journey with me back in Dec 2021 and then went on to become an Instructor himself based in Kent.
His passion and enthusiasm was phenomenal and sessions with him were always fun. Doug was an amazing trail layer too....fast and athletic...always the first one to volunteer to shimmy up a tree or crawl into a tunnel...no hiding place was off limits for him. 🥰
Sadly yesterday whilst on his motorbike he was hit and killed. 😥
RIP Doug....you may be gone but you certainly won't be forgotten. 💔💔
