Can you start your hike too early?

Most certainly! Timing can be everything as far as catching views from the summit.

Putting aside the important consideration of passing weather fronts, in an airstream situation the cloud base is likely to be highest when the temperature is warmest ie around early to mid afternoon.

Start your hike too early and you reach the summit in cloud only to find it’s cleared when you are back down at the car.

One of the pleasures of spending so much time walking in the Scottish Highlands is discovering that there is considerably more to the landscape than what you can see from the path. 🍄‍🟫

At different times of year there are wild berries, herbs, leaves and, particularly towards the end of summer and into autumn, an astonishing variety of fungi.

We’ve been lucky enough to collect quite a few different edible fungi over the years, particularly in the Cairngorms. Some years are
considerably better than others, depending on the weather, but a good autumn can produce an impressive harvest.

Autumn in the Cairngorms: things to do when the days are shorter 🍂

Autumn is a lovely time to visit the Cairngorms. The summer crowds have thinned, the landscape takes on a completely different character and the changing colours of the birch and Scots pine forests can make
even a familiar walk feel new.

But there is one obvious difference from summer: the days are getting shorter. For some people, that makes autumn the perfect time for a Highland break. You don’t necessarily need to plan a full week of long mountain days. Instead, you can combine shorter walks with wildlife watching,
cycling, learning new skills or simply enjoying some of the other things that make the Cairngorms such a special place.
