Working as a therapist with children and young people in the UK is one of those career paths that quietly makes a huge impact.

It’s not just sitting in a room talking about feelings — it’s helping kids navigate school stress, friendship drama, anxiety, family changes, trauma, big emotions… all the stuff that can feel overwhelming when you’re still figuring out who you are.

Sometimes that looks like CBT or systemic work, sometimes it’s art, games or creative play because not every child wants (or needs) a traditional session.

What we love about this area of therapy is the teamwork. You’re connecting with parents, teachers, GPs, CAMHS teams, youth workers — whoever is part of that young person’s support network.

Safeguarding and communication are huge, but you get training, supervision, and a community of people who genuinely care.

It’s not always easy. Demand is high, waiting lists are long, and you carry some heavy stories. But when a child starts to trust the process, when a teenager finally feels heard, or when a family breathes a little lighter — those moments are genuinely worth it.

If you’re someone who’s curious, empathetic, and doesn’t mind a bit of creative thinking, working therapeutically with young people is a pretty special direction to take.

JOIN US ! We are now accepting applications for our February cohort of our Level 5 Course in Counselling Children and Young People

This on-line course is open to qualified counsellors who hold a Level 4 qualification or above in counselling of any modality, who are receiving supervision for a minimum of 1.5 hours per month, who attended counselling sessions as part of their core training (at least 20) and are a member of a counselling professional body. Counsellors must be qualified before the first on-line training day of the course.

This OCN London–accredited 10-day online course is designed for qualified counsellors and psychotherapists who want to build confidence and best-practice skills in counselling children and young people. Covering Part 1 of the BACP curricula for ages 4–10 and 11–18, the programme blends live Friday training with flexible independent study.

Participants join a small, interactive cohort for engaging theory, practical activities and experiential learning. Each training day runs from 10am to 4pm, with around three hours of preparatory study beforehand. Learners should also allow at least twenty additional hours across the course for wider reading and two post-course assignments. Throughout, the course applies the BACP Ethical Framework to support ethical and effective work with young people.
