The Sturminster Newton Big Weekend
Beat the Clock Challenge Big

What a great afternoon In Sturminster Newton at the Exchange!!!

Despite the rain, the Beat the Clock Challenge still went ahead today at the Sturminster Newton Big Weekend!

A huge thank you to the organisers for finding me some indoor space upstairs in The Exchange, which meant I was able to adapt the challenge and keep the fun going despite the weather.

It was fantastic to see youngsters of all ages getting involved. From little ones carefully collecting and moving equipment to older children racing against the clock to improve their times, there was plenty of enthusiasm, determination and smiling faces.

One of my favourite moments was seeing children come back for “just one more go” and then helping to reset the challenge ready for the next person.

Days like today remind me that movement, challenge and adventure don’t have to stop just because the weather changes – sometimes they just need a little adaptation.

☀️ I’ll be back tomorrow from 12–2pm for The Big Lunch, hopefully outdoors if the weather is kinder!

Come along, have a go and see if you can Beat the Clock.

Tonight’s run might not need cancelling…
but it might need rethinking.

For runners quietly wondering how tonight’s session is going to feel before they’ve even started.

I absolutely love this weather and it’s brilliant to finally have some proper sunshine ☀️ But after coaching in these temperatures over the last few days, it really got me thinking about how easy it is to underestimate the cumulative effect of prolonged heat on the body — especially evening runs after a full day of high temperatures.

Years ago I would have pushed through regardless and almost worn it as a badge of honour. Now I see it very differently.

Sometimes the strongest training decision is adapting the session intelligently:
• shortening the run
• slowing the pace
• changing the route for more shade
• reducing intensity
• or occasionally deciding recovery is the better option

That isn’t weakness. It’s good training management.

The body works incredibly hard in hot conditions to regulate temperature, maintain hydration and support cardiovascular function. Even if a session feels manageable at the time, the recovery cost can often be much higher than people realise.

Particularly for:
• newer runners
• anyone carrying fatigue or poor sleep
• runners returning from injury
• people under stress
• or those simply not adapted to running in prolonged heat

Tonight’s session should support your training, not compromise your recovery for the rest of the week.

Hopefully everyone enjoys their club runs safely and sensibly this evening 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️☀️

WHY THESE SESSIONS ARE DIFFERENT… 🚴🏃🔥

🚨 Dorset Junior Triathlon Club — Sessions Start NEXT WEEK! 🚨

📍 QE II Community Field, Child Okeford
📅 Saturdays from 23rd May – 27th June
⏰ 8:30am–10:00am

After lots of messages asking when the next block was launching… bookings are now OPEN 😊

These sessions are designed for youngsters approximately aged 7–12 years, although some slightly younger children may also be suitable depending on confidence, coordination and previous activity experience.

These sessions are designed to be progressive, but they are also very inclusive and flexible for families juggling busy weekends, holidays and other activities.

Whilst youngsters naturally gain more confidence, consistency and progression from attending regularly, missing a session absolutely doesn’t mean they “fall behind.” Skills are constantly revisited, refined and developed in different ways as the sessions evolve.

This isn’t simply swimming, cycling and running.

The sessions are designed to help youngsters think, react, problem solve, adapt, communicate, challenge themselves and build confidence through movement, games, pressure based challenges and creative triathlon inspired activities.

Every child approaches challenges differently — and that’s exactly the point.

As skills become more established, the sessions become more creative, unpredictable and engaging, helping youngsters learn how to apply those skills under different conditions, rules and situations rather than simply repeating drills over and over again.

🏃 Confidence
🚴 Coordination
🧠 Decision making
🔥 Resilience
💡 Creativity
🙌 Teamwork
⚡ Adaptability

Parents are very welcome to stay and watch — most do 😊

Options available:
✔ Pay As You Go
