THE Blairgowrie Golf Club’s Junior Section has enjoyed a surprise financial windfall.
When Archie Graham – brother of Scotland internationals Gregor and Connor – was counting down to his 21st birthday, parents Stuart and June decided to hold a Charity Golf and Race Day at the club as part of the celebrations.
Dad Stuart revealed the event had raised £11,780, with £10,000 going to support the work of Down Syndrome Scotland and Perth and Kinross Disability Sport, and £1780 donated to the golf club which has played a big role in the lives of the family.
“As part of our plans to mark Archie’s 21st birthday we wanted to celebrate a wonderful son and young man and raise awareness, and some funds, for fantastic charities which have supported Archie and many others over the years,” said Stuart.
“The day was a huge success and we are very grateful to everyone who took part and supported the fundraiser by taking teams and offering items for the Silent Auction, which included a Masters golf shirt signed by Robert MacIntyre and golf on the Old Course with lunch or dinner at the R&A.
“We raised way more than we had thought possible, so we decided to make a donation to the Junior Section at The Blairgowrie Golf Club, where Archie works in the clubhouse every Friday and where he spent many happy times with his brothers Gregor and Connor as they were growing up and dreaming of one day joining the professional ranks.
“Archie still enjoys his golf and plays off 25.
“All three of the boys were golfing almost as soon as they could walk, starting off with plastic clubs before progressing on the fantastic Wee Course, where Gregor took part in a Beat the Pro challenge on the Charity Day.
“The club and some of the parents are very active on the Junior front and I’m sure they will find a good use for the donation to cover travels costs, kit or additional coaching.”
Stuart Wilson, managing secretary, thanked Archie and the Graham family for their generosity.
He said: “I’m glad the fundraiser here at the club was a great success and this generous contribution will be used to further support and develop our junior golf programme.
“On behalf of our members I’d like to thank Stuart and June, and of course Archie, for thinking of the club.
“It was a lovely touch from Archie to come along to present a cheque - with his customary beaming smile - to some of our juniors at their weekly medal competition.”
Gregor earned a European Challenge Tour card last year and younger brother Connor is on a golfing scholarship at Texas Tech.
A member of Blair Dolphins, Scottish Boccia champion Archie’s sporting achievements also include a gold medal win at the British Down Syndrome Swimming Championships.
