Blackmore Athletic Walking Football 50’s Team Crowned Champions

In the competitive 50’s Essex Walking Football League that boosts four divisions, Blackmore Athletic Walking Football Club 50’s side triumphed to claim this season’s First Division Championship with the most wins, goals scored and the fewest goals conceded. Canvey Island’s Concord Rangers came second on 5 points less but went on to win the Challenge Cup.

A club spokesman commented “Our club continues to evolve with over 30 quality local players on our books. It is a feather in our cap that as a small village team we are competing against city and big town teams such as Chelmsford, Southend, Colchester, Norwich, Romford, Grays and Billericay etc. who have bigger populations and better facilities. In our first two seasons we got penalised a lot for infringements and to address this, we decided to become more Walking Football savvy and use a referee during our Monday night practice sessions at Blackmore Sports and Social Club to help us observe the strict competition rules. We also introduced the same sized goals used in the league to replicate match conditions. This was most beneficial in helping our 50’s to win the league and reach the cup quarter finals this year and for our 60’s to finish a respectable fourth in the first division and also reach the cup quarter finals given matches are often drawn or decided by one goal. Our success has also given rise for England Walking Football squad call ups for some of our players.”

Their adaptation to a more technical brand of walking football and learning game management has certainly paid dividends for Blackmore in a sport that is one of the fastest growing for over 50’s men and woman both in participation and in spectatorship.

Blackmore 60’s Crowned Champions

Blackmore Athletic Walking Football Club since being founded in 2015 (with the objective of playing the beautiful game at an advanced age) had previously spurned opportunities to play in a proper league preferring to play friendlies.

However, following their quarter finals success at the prestigious Mallorca Walking Football Tournament in 2021 , they joined last year, the FA affiliated Essex Walking Football League that boasts big name or town teams, including; Southend, Grays, Chelmsford, Billericay, Romford, Norwich, Leyton Orient and West Ham etc.

In their inaugural season their 50’s age group team gained promotion to division 1 and their 60’s team finished 2nd in division 2 and also reached the semi- finals of the League Cup.

The breaking news is… that following last week’s conclusion of the 60’s Division 2, 2023 league fixtures, Blackmore Athletic 60’s were crowned champions after beating Grays 1-0 and thus gained promotion to Division 1 for the next season. Their 50’s team are on course to finish a respectable mid table.

Deserved league 2 winners Blackmore 60’s won the league by 4 points and in doing so scored the highest number of goals and conceding the fewest.
