Summer Safety Tips - Read, Ask and Look

READ all the safety information signs. Most beaches will have a safety information board with important local information and general safety tips. Always obey flags on the beach.
ASK the lifeguards for information. If you can, find a lifeguarded beach. Lifeguards can provide useful local and condition-dependent information as well as expert (and free!) help if you get into trouble.
LOOK for dangers. Check for rip currents, submerged rocks, cliffs, cold, heat.... There are many different dangers on the beach, if you want to learn more about how to spot and manage these, check out our Swimming Safety and Rescue course.

Follow us on Instagram and Facebook to be the first to know about Swim Venture dates, new courses and behind-the-scenes content!

We love bright colours over here at OWD πŸ§‘πŸ’›πŸ’šπŸ©·

It's important that your able to be seen! If the worst were to happen to you or your child, a bright swimsuit would help lifeguards find the casualty underwater.

Other things you do to make your self more visible are:
- Wear a bright coloured hat
- Wear a tow float that is colourful

Dippy Swim Co make amazing tow floats that are super affordable!

I love this time of year! Teaching Water Safety to 3 and 4 years olds . Out of the mouth of babe’s . They have me in stitches.

1. Having fallen in the water with clothes on and done a star float on their back, swum to a submerged platform and then back to land (the streps)
They need to tread water ( with our help) and take their clothes off (Swimming costume are worn under their clothes- well most of the time. At which point the clothes stay on.😳 Anyway the PJs are sinking down to the bottom of the pool. Question - Do you safe/pick up your clothes or do you let them float away? Reply from a few - β€œ SAVE them ! They are my favourite!’”
Question - O so I can go to a shop and buy another you ?” Confused look β€œNO!” So the question is repeated and the answer is β€œME”!

2. Learning the Emergency Service number (999)and which are the Emergency Services. A couple of the replies β€œPolice, Ambulance, Fire Brigade, Life Guards, Coast Guard , Mountain Rescue and A Super Hero OR my personal favourite - Mummy and Daddy β€œ

3. Teaching Reach and Throw Rescues -
What could to use other then a woggle /noodle for a reach rescue- my favourite this week β€œ a coat hanger β€œ πŸ˜‚ Mum’s response-β€œ We always take coat hangers to the beach β€œ in a sarcastic tone.

What would you use for a throw rescue- β€œa brick β€œ 🀣

I love these little guys ! It makes all so worthwhile.❀️

ℹ️ RIP CURRENTS ℹ️
Rip currents are another major cause of accidental drowning on beaches all across the world and one to specifically highlight for .

By sharing our water safety booklet or water safety presentation (featured earlier) we can teach children about the best way to avoid them:

πŸ›‘ Choose a lifeguarded beach
πŸ›‘ Ask the lifeguard for advice
πŸ›‘ Always swim between the designated flags

Open water swimming can be a very rewarding activity, but it's not like swimming in a warm, lifeguarded swimming pool - it needs to be planned and approached safely.

As water safety advocates, it is important for us all to spread the message about due diligence during ... and beyond into the summer months when more people might be tempted to take their first swim.

Share our handy 5 open water swimming tips here, which can be used as the basis for beginner swimmers to do further research ... with local OWS groups, coaches, and accredited OWS venues. πŸ–
