What should an Athlete expect from me as a Coach?

Structure and Progression:
Your plan will build over time as your fitness and strength increases, each session will have a purpose and will be relevant to your goals and also the rest of your training schedule.

Adaptive Plan:
Life is complicated and so your plan needs to be adaptive and flexible. Consistency is key to improving your fitness, however a rigid or unrealistic plan means more missed sessions. By having me flex and adapt your plan to your life, week by week or even day by day, means you will get the most out of your training times.

Accountability:
For most athletes, accountability is one of the greatest benefits of the coach/athlete relationship. The knowledge that someone else is interested and investing in your training leads to greater commitment and discipline. Overall better compliance with the plan, so less over or under training.

Feedback and Analysis:
Ongoing feedback and analysis of both training sessions and races. Regular feedback means that adjustments can be made to the plan and also the way training is progressing. Feedback is a 2-way process and needs good communication and honesty from both athlete and coach.

Nutrition-S&C-Bike Fit:
As a coach I can provide guidance on the wider aspects of performance and training and, when necessary, connect my athletes with trusted professionals with specialist skills and knowledge.

So, you want to become an Ironman?

Firstly, you don’t need to be superhuman to complete an Ironman distance triathlon, but it also isn’t easy.

Desire, if you don’t want it then you won’t dedicate the time and effort needed to get to the level of fitness required. You will need to make sacrifices and commit to training.
Intent, regular and consistent training is needed this needs a plan and I willingness to keep to it most of the time.

Time, depending on whether you want to complete or compete, and your fitness start point the amount of time you need to commit will vary but you will be doing 5hr rides and 2hrs+ runs there is no way round this.

Flexibility and compromise are essential unless you are a professional athlete with no other commitments or goals. Sessions will need to be squeezed in, rescheduled, and cut short, that’s just life.

Support, from family and friends will help. Also from professionals, a physio, bike fitter and an experienced coach who understand Ironman distance training these aren't essential but the will make the process smooth, more enjoyable and increase your chances of succeeding.

If you have the dream of an Ironman (or 70.3) finish, then go for it.

Having a coach by your side will not only make it more likely for your dream to come true, but also always you to make the most of the time you have available to train. Training for an Ironman takes planning, structure, and an understanding of how to build fitness whilst reducing the risk of injury and burn out as much as possible.

I love working with enthusiastic athletes on the journey to becoming an Ironman or looking to improve their race time or experience.

The coach athlete relationship creates accountability, its not so much the coach holds the athlete to account (well not in most arrangements), rather the athlete holds themselves to account. The athlete knows the coach will be looking at their data and session feedback, so the athlete is more honest with themselves in preparation for the conversation with the coach. It’s that honest self-reflection that changes behaviour.

Do you want or need that accountability in your training? I Have 5 slots available athletes training for an endurance event for the 2024 season. PM to arrange a call to discuss your 2024 goals.

Striving for perfection can lead to some good traits and behaviours such as high levels of motivation and commitment as well as being goal focused. It can also lead to less desirable elements such as being over critical, seeing every event as a success or failed with no middle ground, alongside over training and so burn out.

If unchecked, perfectionism can lead to dissatisfaction, frustration, and disappointment and so erodes an athlete’s confidence. Perfection is a heavy burden to carry around all the time.

I try to remind my athletes that their efforts are amazing, and perfectionism shouldn’t distract them from that fact.

Constantly turning up and putting in good efforts every day and week will give you greater gains than one perfectly executed session once or twice a week. Don't avoid sessions because perfection doesn’t feel obtainable

Recommending a brand and model of trainers is a very tricky area There are so many variables, people’s feet, gait and running ambition are all so different. Even in shops where they provide gait analysis and video feedback on treadmills there is no guarantee that the suggestion will lead to a comfortable shoe in the long term. The fact that your coach, mate or someone at your club loves a certain shoe is not likely to help massively.

Recommendations have their place for certain features, how robust and well-constructed a shoe is, how the sizing compares to other brands and model etc. However, the only way to really find the right shoe is to try them on and have a little run (treadmills are ok but on road or pavement is better). When you find the right shoe, you will probably just know It will feel right, comfortable, hugging your foot in the right places and giving you room in others. If it doesn’t feel right in the shop, no matter how great that shoe is meant to be, it’s unlikely to work for you at 10-20miles into a run.

So, get down to your local running shop and try on a few brands, models and sizes and then pick the one that feels most comfortable for you.
