History of the Club

The team that would become Aston Villa Ladies Football Club was formed in 1973 as Solihull FC. When Aston Villa asked for help in forming a women’s team in 1989, Solihull responded. After initially using the name ‘Villa Aztecs’, the club agreed to change their name in 1996 and became the officially-recognised women’s team of Aston Villa. In 1998 the senior team won promotion t

o the Northern Division of the FA Women’s Premier League. In 2007, the team was fully integrated into the Aston Villa family. After 13 seasons in the Northern Division, Aston Villa Ladies won the league in 2011 and gained promotion to the National Division. In the following season, they finished third in the National Division to record their highest-ever finish at the time. Aston Villa won the FA Women’s League Cup in 2013, the final year of the winter pyramid structure, beating Leeds Utd 5-4 on penalties in the final. When the Women’s Super League (WSL) was reorganised in 2014 to become a 2-tier summer league, Aston Villa were placed in the newly-formed WSL2.
