We had a kit session at HIIT the Trails last night.
As an s&c coach its important to help runners mitigate injuries, improve running economy, and efficiency. Improved running technique, a stronger core, posterior chain and posture can help all this, so we did this through a trail runners based circuit. Challenging, engaging and fun.
Well done everyone 🙌🏻

What if you’re capable of more than you currently believe?

Over the years I’ve coached runners towards their first trail race, first marathon, first ultra and some challenges they never thought possible.

What’s interesting is that the biggest breakthrough is rarely fitness.

It’s confidence.

Confidence to tackle steep climbs.
Confidence to descend without fear.
Confidence to enter an event that feels just outside your comfort zone.
Confidence to believe you’re capable of more.

The trails have an incredible way of teaching us lessons that go far beyond running. They teach resilience, patience, problem-solving and self-belief.

That’s exactly why I’ve created the Ultimate Trail Running Workshop on 10th October at Waseley Hills.

A day designed to help runners of all abilities develop the skills, knowledge and mindset to become stronger, more confident trail runners.

We’ll cover:

Hill climbing and descending techniques
Strength & conditioning for trail runners
Pole use and efficiency
Nutrition and fuelling
Mindset and goal setting

Alongside guest coach and Montane athlete Jon Shield, we’ll share the lessons we’ve learned from military service, mountain running, ultra-distance racing and coaching hundreds of runners.

The aim isn’t simply to make you fitter, it’s to help you discover what you’re truly capable of.

We also have support/products from:
TrailSkin
RealMeal
Pain Cave head wear.

We’ve already filled half the available places and I’d love to help a few more runners join us.

Six years coached. Still improving.

One of the biggest myths in endurance sport is that after a few years of training, improvement slows, sometimes it does, but not when training is consistent and focused on developing the whole athlete.

I recently completed an annual performance test with my athlete Jola, a 45-year-old ultra runner who I’ve coached for the last six years.

Compared to last year:

30:15 IFT increased from 48.3 to 49.3

5-minute VDOT distance increased from 1017m to 1110m (+9%)

Jump height increased from 38.3cm to 41.9cm (+9%)

Push-ups doubled from 15 to 30 (+100%)

Plank improved from 88 seconds to 150 seconds (+70%)

Calf strength asymmetry was eliminated, with both legs now achieving 30 repetitions

What excites me most isn’t any single result, it’s that every key area improved:

Aerobic fitness
Running economy
Power
Strength endurance
Core endurance
Injury resilience

At 45 years old, and after six years of structured coaching, Jola isn’t simply maintaining fitness, she’s becoming a stronger, faster, more resilient and more capable athlete.

This is why I believe coaching shouldn’t just be about adding miles to a training plan, its about developing the complete athlete for the long term.

Jola is a brilliant example of what’s possible when commitment and consistency meet.

The data tells one story, but the real story is six years of showing up.

Most people are capable of far more than they realise, the problem is they never put themselves in an environment that allows them to discover it.

Over the years, I’ve seen it time and time again, people believing they need to get fitter before they can enter a race, join a group, tackle a mountain or think about an ultra.

What they often need isn’t more fitness, they need confidence, knowledge, and guidance, and most importantly, they need to be surrounded by people who help them believe that bigger things are possible.

The trails and hills have a remarkable way of teaching lessons that extend far beyond running, they teach resilience when conditions aren’t perfect, self-belief when doubt creeps in, perspective when life feels overwhelming.

I’ve seen runners go from doubting whether they could run a local trail race to standing on the start line of ultras they once thought were impossible, because they became more committed, more coachable and willing to learn.

Whether through military leadership, strength and conditioning, or coaching trail, fell and ultra runners of all abilities, one thing has remained consistent:

Growth happens when people place themselves in environments that challenge and support them in equal measure.

That’s why community matters.

That’s why coaching matters.

That’s why learning matters.

Not because someone else has the answers, but because the right environment helps you discover what you’re capable of.

If you’re looking to take the next step in your own trail running journey, I currently have one coaching space available.

There are also a limited number of places remaining on the Ultimate Trail Running Workshop at Waseley Hills on 18 October, where we’ll be covering strength, movement, hill skills, mindset, nutrition and performance in the real world of trail running.

If either sounds like it might help you move closer to your goals, send me a message or visit my website for more details.

You might be capable of far more than you think.

What a fantastic HIIT the Trails, led by coach Leah, taking the heat into consideration she restructured the session to provide a good mix of challenge but also an opportunity to work on mobility to improve running biomechanics.

Jola Związek and Emma Lambert went out on an adventure yesterday taking on the Stretton Summits round, starting at the Outdoor Depot in Church Stretton and taking on 18.5 mile circular route with around 4000 feet of ascent.
A tough day to do it, but taking plenty of fuel and hydration, a great way to take on a challenge and train in the heat sensibly.
Well done guys
